From technical heights to going green – the Konjacsponge

I recently declared my love for the Clarisonic face brush in an elaborate post.
Today I am here to tell you why it didn’t come with me to New Zealand and what I took instead.

The one downside of my (very old) Clarisonic is the charger. It is bulky, it is heavy and I rarely bother to take it with me when I travel. And even though my skin misses it a little, I can totally go three weeks without it.

But as we are gone for seven weeks straight this time, I wanted to try something else to show my skin some love. Of course, I could have bought a Clarisonic Mia and be done, but as the old one still works perfectly well, I shunned the investment.

Konjac Sponge “Green Tea” by ebeline

So I went for the Konjacsponge instead.

What the (different) companies claim:
Provides soft massage and peeling without irritation. Moisturizes naturally. 100% vegan. Deep pore cleansing.
As the Konjacsponge is sold infused with added skincare (i.e. aloe vera), there are other claims made on top for the individual product.

Facts:
The Konjacsponge is made from the Konjac nodule, grown mostly in asian countries.

It is available from different companies, I got mine at my local drugstore for 2,89 €.
If you want to buy online, here and here are different options.
Added ingredients are green tea (anti-ageing),  aloe vera (moisturizing), charcoal (fights impurities).

You can use the Konjacsponge (KS) with every cleanser, in the mornings, in the evenings, whenever you prefer. It claims to be safe for daily use, and it is on my robust skin, but if your skin is sensitive, I would ease into it and maybe start with twice a week.

Mine came infused with Green Tea, promising added antioxidants and therefore anti-ageing properties.
Before you use it, you let it soak in water (I just rinsed it for maybe thirty seconds) until it expands and feels like a sponge. After that, you apply your cleanser and then massage it into your face with the KS.

Action shot!

After you used it, you rinse it again and hang it to dry. When dry it turns stiff and a little scratchy, but even after a few days without using it, the KS gets back to its spongy self when soaked again.

A change after 2-3 months is recommended. After about eight weeks of daily use, mine still looks and feels good, no tearing or discoloration.

Does it live up to it´s claims?
In parts.
It provides a soft massage and peeling effect, my skin feels very clean and it is non irritating on me.
The added claims, i.e. “anti-aging”, based on the added ingredients on the other hand…
If infused with green tea, and then rinsed about four times in water, how much of the green tea will be left in the sponge? You know, I am an avid drinker of green tea (any tea, to be honest), but after brewing it twice, the agents are gone.
I don’t think this is any different in the sponge.

Will I rebuy?
Yes.
I like it a lot for traveling, I like the soft peeling effect it has on my skin and the clean feeling after using it. It is the perfect, space saving cleansing tool when I just can’t be bothered to drag my Clarisonic around.

Who would I recommend it to?
Anyone. It is affordable (ranging from 2,90 up to 10 €), small, easy to use and it gives an effective cleanse, which is important at any age.
If you already own a Clarisonic or similar device, you probably don’t need it on top. But if you are looking for something similar (no dupe, just up the same road) and can’t/won’t afford a Clarisonic, give it a go.

Have you tried any of those sponges before?
