Alpha-H Daily Essential Moisturizer SPF 50+ – The gods are jealous.

The beauty gods are jealous.

After stating numerous times that I rarely needed to moisturize my face at all, only in winter, and then not every day, things began to change.

I hinted it here already, and even though I was still in denial how much my skins needs had already changed, I decided to bring a moisturizer when packing for New Zealand.
And because sunscreen is important, and time, too, I decided to go for Alpha-H´s Daily Essential Moisturizer with an SPF of 50+.

Alpha H Daily Essential Moisturizer SPF 50+

Yes, I know I go on and on about not getting your SPF from your moisturizer, and I still believe that you will never get the protection written on the bottle, just because you use too little, but even a little SPF first thing in the morning is welcome when you spend the whole day outside, and I was lazy and yes, I burnt my nose.
Badly.

What Alpha-H claims:

Provides waterproof, broad-spectrum sun damage protection at SPF 50 without feeling heavy or looking chalky on your skin.
Suitable for all skin types, even combination/oily, it strikes the perfect balance between long-lasting hydration and a non-greasy, barely-there texture making it the perfect base for makeup.

Facts:

The product comes in a squeeze tube, different from the one I show in pictures (mine was part of a gift set) and contains 50 ml of product.
It retails for 40 € on the Cult Beauty website.

Alpha-H Daily Essential Moisturizer

Favorable ingredients:
– Cera Alba (Bees Wax): Smoothing
– Hydroxyethylcellulose: Firming
– Tocopherol (Vitamin E): Antioxydant
– Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract: Moisturizing

Unfavorable Ingredients:
– Mineral Oil: I have talked about the disadvantages of mineral oil here.
– Parabenes: Disturbing hormonal balance in animal studies, no effect on humans proven. I don´t mind them, but I know one people do.

The used sunscreen is a chemical one, Octocrylene, so no risk for flash back or white cast. It does though come with a warning for an increased risk for contact dermatitis, so keep that in mind if your skin is sensitive.
Most reviews I read said it dried down to a semi-matte finish, but that didn’t happen with me.
My face looked pretty „glowy“ after application. Not greasy, but powder-worthy.

Does it live up to its claims?

Most of them.

It is non-greasy, after it sunk in it felt lightweight, there is no chalky overcast to your face after you used it and it sits well under makeup.
But I don’t think it is suitable for all skin types. At the end of our holiday, after two long flights and lots of air-condition, my skin was dry. No more combination, I am talking dry as in dry, flakey patches on my cheeks and neck, and tightness everywhere else.
So I can tell you first hand: If your skin is severely dry/dehydrated, this moisturizer isn’t going to do the job.

Will I rebuy?

No.

I like it, it is a decent product, but in the end it didn’t wow me.
And I don’t like using mineral oil based products, even though it isn’t that bad when it is the last layer put on my face, so I will look for an alternative.

Who do I recommend it to?

If you have oily/combination or normal skin and like to save the extra step with SPF in the morning, this is for you.
Girls with dry/dehydrated skin, go get something else.

I have dry skin so this is not for me. Nice review.

  • Too bad it didn't work as intended for you. My skin gets dehydrated VERY easily eventhough it's oily so this isn't the product for me.

  • Oh it wouldn't be good for me as i have dry skin

  • I don't like the idea of moisturizer + sunscreen either. Too bad it didn't work out.

  • It looks interesting. I've been looking for a high SPF day cream for a long time. Might check this one out. X

  • Soo I've only tried Liquid Gold from Alpha G, and since my experience was very lukewarm, I didn't look further into the brand. I've been sticking to Caudalie Vinoperfect Day Fluid for years now. It's my favorite because it's light enough not to get my T-zone greased up. At the same time, it is hydrating enough. That's kinda rare 🙂

I love this in depth and honest review. Lately I just use cetaphil lotion on my face and it's been working great. http://fashionablyidu.blogspot.com/

  • I actually like that it has such high spf in it but if it changed your combination skin to dry, it would probably destroy my already very dry skin. :-/

I am soooooo happy to see an honest review! I am actually on the look out for a good moisturizer.. mine just isn't cutting it.. – http://www.domesticgeekgirl.com

  • I don't think it really changed my skin, i fear the change I saw is down to "aging"… But it just isn't moisturizing enough for dry skin.
What are you using at the moment?

  • I´ll have to look into that, thank you for sharing.
    What skin-type do you have?

  • Thank you.
Any recommendations for a mineral oil free moisturizer?

  • Thank you.

  • Sounds like a miracle product, I might try that one then.

I really love Alpha-H Liquid Gold, so I was really disappointed. I had expected to be blown away by this moisturizer…

  • If you have combination/oily skin, this may work great.
Did you have a nice Easter Weekend?

  • Okay, I´ll look into La Roche Posay then. Which one specifically?

  • Yes, I learned again the hard way to use a separate SPF. My poor nose was actually peeling…

  • Yes.
    Thank you for stopping by.

  • No, it isn't. Is your skin dehydrated throughout summer time too or is it a winter phenomenon?

  • Thank you.
Did you have a nice Easter weekend?

  • Less in summer, definitely less. But I still have to watch out and make sure I get enough (lightweight) moisture.

  • Ah, the struggle!
I am curious to see how my skin will be this summer. Everything seems to be changing at the moment…

  • I'm still using Dr. Hauschka but it doesn't have spf in it 😕 and I'm usually lazy to apply a separate layer of sunscreen.

  • What a confession! SPF is what I wear every day (except for sick days when I don't leave the house/bed), because it really is the one thing with proven wrinkle prevention…

  • Thank you Corinne. I try to focus on the things I´d love to read before I buy a product.

  • Thank you Maireem. It is quite popular in the UK, I think.

Hi Anne, this product has been raved so much and I am happy for your honest review.

    Jo | http://saycheesycake.blogspot.nl

  • If only I can figure that out! Trial and error is still ongoing haha 🙂 Lately it's been working wonders to add a light layer of facial oil under my cream at night.

  • I've not tried anything from Alpha H yet. Heard great things about their Liquid Gold but never bothered to give it a go. Such a shame this moisturiser didn't wow you. I personally find it hard to get moisturisers that will make me wanna repurchase. I think the ones from Clarins are the only ones I keep going back to. x

  • i totally get it what u mean by some product which doesnt wow you but there is nothing to complain as such
    nicely reviewed

  • That's a shame – I've heard great things about Liquid Gold and it's on my (very long) list of products to buy. Personally, I love any moisturiser from La Roche-Posay or Decleor. You can't beat the French for skincare! x
