Alpha-H Essential Hydration Cream

When I was a child, I dreamed of having a twin. That was of course inspired by films and books and included daydreams of funny pranks as well as the romantic illusion that having someone that looked like you was similar to having a soulmate.

Growing up I embraced my uniqueness and learned by observation that just because someone looked similar that didn´t necessarily mean your thoughts were similar as well.

Alpha-H Essential Hydration Cream (travel size)

So it is safe to say that ever since I entered adolescence, I prefer things to be easily distinguishable. And that applies to my sisters and me as well as to my creams and lotions.

Because when I received a sample size of the Alpha-H Essential Hydration Cream, I almost chucked it in the bin (the friends and family bin, obviously), because I figured I had tested it before. Packaging, smell and name were way too close to the Alpha-H Daily Essential Moisturizer (Review here) for me to immediately realize it was a whole different product.

But luckily I discovered my mistake and used my face once again for testing purposes.

What Alpha-H claims:

This soothing moisturiser suspends sea minerals, fatty acids & youth-restoring peptides in the finest essential oils, to nurture both skin & senses. Oil of Evening Primrose & Linoleic Acid nourish the skin & restore elasticity; Arnica Montana, Cypress, Solomon’s Seal & Barley work to counteract inflammation & minimise redness; Palmitoyl Tripeptide-5 stimulates collagen production to reduce the appearance of fine lines while Ylang Ylang & Peppermint Oils balance sebum to normalise even oily skin.

Facts:

Prize and size

Just like all alpha-H products, the packaging is minimalistic and functional, something I really enjoy. My version looked a little different from the original, being part of a travel set, but the difference wasn’t that big.

One tube contains 50 ml and retails for 35 GBP (44 €) on Cult Beauty here. For reference, my 15 ml lasted me around two and a half months.

Texture and smell

Despite claiming to nurture all senses and containing essential oils I didn´t notice a particular scent in the product, neither pleasant nor unpleasant. The texture was a little firmer than I would have imagined, feeling more like a cream than a lotion, but was easy to distribute.

Application and effects

The cream distributed easily and sank into my skin quickly without leaving a residue. It felt richer than my usual lightweight lotions, but not too heavy on my combination oily skin, and actually gave me the feeling of being protected against wind and cold.

As far as sebum control goes I can´t really say if it made a difference throughout the day, but it definitely didn´t make me any oilier. And my fine lines? Anything hydrating helps them temporarily diminish.

Favorable ingredients:

  • Glycerin: Hydrating
  • Hydrolysed Corallina Officinalis Extract: Antioxidant
  • Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Oil: Improves elasticity moisturizing
  • Macadamia Ternifolia Seed Oil: Moisturizing, high in linoleic acid
  • Oenothera Biennia Oil: Moisturizing, antioxidant, protects from harsh weather
  • Hordeum Vulgare Cera: Moisturizing, antioxidant
  • Tocopherol Acetate: Vitamin E, antioxidant
  • Panthenol: Antiinflammatory, locks in moisture
  • Symphytum Officinale Leaf Extract: Soothing, antioxidant
  • Panax Ginseng Root Extract: Antioxidant, promotes healing
  • Triticum Vulgare Germ Oil: Plumping, antioxidant, moisture retaining
  • Cananga Odorata Leaf Oil: Balancing moisture levels
  • Triolein: Moisturizing
  • Mentha Piperita Oil: Soothing
  • Polygonatum Officinale Rhizome/Root Extract: Anti-inflammatory, antioxidant
  • Cupressus Sempervirens Seed Extract: Conditioning

Unfavorable Ingredients:

  • Silicones
  • Essential oils (may be irritating)

Does it live up to its claims?

Yes.

I can´t vouch for calming down the redness, as I don’t have inflammation on my skin, but it does feel soothing, it contains the ingredients to live up to the other claims and it works well on my combination/oily skin.

Will I rebuy?

No.

It is a very good product, but I have fallen head over heels for the Oskia Renaissance 360 (Review here) and don’t need two different ones.

Who do I recommend it to?

If you are combination/oily, but lack hydration, that one will work great for you.

If you have redness and inflammation and need protection against harsh weather conditions, I can see that one being a great pick.

If you are a fan of essential oils, there are plenty in here.

Did you ever dream about having a twin?

And what do you look for in your moisturizer?

  • This seems like a good, no-brainer moisturizer! Every time you write a review about an Alpha-H product, I want to explore the brand, in fact, I really need to see where I can find it in France/ on the internet and do so!

    http://fannyanddailybeauty.com

    • I get my stuff from Cult Beauty, as I haven’t really seen them in store here in Germany.

  • Actually, I’ve always wanted to be unique and different, LOL! I distinctly remember thinking as a child that having a monozygotic twin would have been awful… I would’ve loved having a dizygotic twin sister, though.
    http://carolinapage.eu

    • My sisters and I are close enough to pass as dizygotic twin sisters. And when we were younger we did look pretty much alike, but that has changed with passing years and different lifestyles. I loved a book when I was younger, called „Anne wants to be a twin“ and I felt like it was written just for me (it had my name on it after all).

  • I don’t always use a moisturiser (tend to use an oil and spf), but when I do it’s usually in the winter or when my skin gets dehydrated or dry so I like them rich and as my skin isn’t sensitive, full of essential oils! My favourites are usually by weleda, as they’re super hydrating and not too expensive.

    Sunshineandglow.blogspot.com

    • I never really tried any Weleda skincare, to be honest, I don’t know why. Only their body stuff, which is lovely, but a bit more pricey than my usual stuff.

  • this sounds like a great one to pick up. thanks for the review on this!

  • Sounds great! But I guess that if you have an equally good product already there’s no point in spending money on a second.

  • Hydration is key in my moisturizers even though my skin has been pretty good recently. I have never thought of having a twin but definitely wished for a sister instead of having two brothers.

    • I had only sisters, I wished for brothers. We always ant what we don’t have I guess.

  • I’ve been meaning to try out Alpha-H products, but at the time I was looking for them I think they were re-branding or something because they were sold out everywhere! This cream sounds really nice and hydrating 🙂 Thanks for the rec!

    • I have been trying quite a few things already and they do have some really nice stuff. My absolute favorite being the Alpha-H Liquid Gold.

      • Thanks for the rec 🙂

  • It sounds good but I’m just not wowed enough to buy it.
Btw, I bought the TBS Lightening Drops!! I also read a couple of reviews from bloggers with my skintone and the pink tint doesn’t seem to be an issue. I’m excited to try it soon. 🙂

  • I thought it would be fun to have a twin when I was young as well but then my mom told me that meant I would have to share everything I had so I thought better of it haha. I personally like my moisturizers to offer brightening benefits as well as good hydration.

    • I guess I never thought about the sharing part as much. I have three younger sisters, so sharing was necessary anyway.

  • It would be nice to have a twin, but I have an older sister, so that’s close enough 🙂 The moisturiser sounds lovely, even though I have dry skin I do love anti-redness products with oils in them.

    alicered.co.uk

    • I have three younger sisters, but as I was the one that had to look after them (sometimes) it wasn’t the same.

  • I’m an only child – so instead of a twin I generally just wished for another sibling. Looking back though, it’s nice to know I didn’t have one so that my parents could spoil me and I would never have to share my toys 😉
Hydration is key in a moisturizer for me – this sounds amazing! I have redness, but I think that’s just genetics because even rosehip oil I use doesn’t make much of a difference on my skin. If I can find it in Canada I’d love to try this out (I might have to be pried away from the Vichy product I love so dearly lol)
    Great review 🙂

    http://www.lindseyginge.com

    • Neven though I had to share my toys with my sisters, I wouldn’t want to miss one of them. I guess both has it´s advantages. At least you always had someone to play with round when you went on vacation.

Alpha-H should be available in Canada, if you curiosity gets strong enough.

  • Oh yes, I wanted to have a twin sister at some point but most of the time I wanted to have an older sister, I’m blessed only with younger brother though, haha!

The moisturiser sounds really nice, my skin seems to be constantly dehydrated, especially during Winter. Not enough water drinking probably 😉 x

    Mummy’s Beauty Corner

    • I always wished for a brother, as I had only sisters, and all of them were younger. Being the eldest child is never fun.

  • Love how you start with a little story and mix it with the product!
    Thank you for reviewing
    Dora http://www.BangsBang.com

  • I used to wish I had a twin when I was younger too. I think I read too many books where twins would pull pranks just like you mentioned. It always seemed like it would be a lot of fun. The cream definitely sounds like something I could benefit from. Good thing you didn’t chuck it, huh?

  • Ha! So many children wish they had a twin – I know I did as well. Possibly something to do with having an in built „friend“ around all the time?

It can be super hard to find a cream that hydrates oily skin without making a mess of your face, this sounds nice 😉

    • I guess the built in friend is a good explanation. I had sisters, but with all the quarrels you have that didn´t satisfy me. Do you have siblings?

  • I’d like to try a sample of this because because I can sometimes have a little redness but would hesitate about buying a full tube in case it wouldn’t be moisturising enough for my skin. Great review, as always xx

  • Kay (shoesandglitter)

Funnily enough, when I was very little (about six years old) I wanted to have a twin sister soo badly I’d actually just make one up and have her as my imaginary friend (I was a weird kid). My parents noticed that, and I told them how much I wanted a little sister, so they decided to have another baby. It ended up being a baby brother, but I wasn’t complaining. 😉 x x All because of my little imaginary twin sister, lol. x

As for the cream, it actually sound perfect for me! My skin is super oily with a lot of redness, but it needs good hydration, also. I don’t think I will ever be able to spend this much on a moisturiser, though… (which is ironic considering how much more I can spend on makeup, I know). Do you have any cheaper alternatives/recommendations? 🙂 x

    • I hope your brother acknowledges the fact that he owes his existence to your creativity and imagination!

I cant think of any alternatives at the top of my head, but I started using another moisturizer with similar claims and a less steep price point. I will let you know if I like it as much.

  • Nice post Anne!
My skin is dry, with the eventual breakout crisis, I do care for soothing properties on my moisturizer, and loads of hydration! Although I haven’t found my holy grail, I’m pretty satisfied with the combo of serum and moisturizer I’m using now 🙂

    Nati | Gattinoni skincare GIVEAWAY

    • Which one are you using?

      • What works best so far for me is the hydrating serum from an organic swiss brand Reficis. It has Mallow and it’s soothing. Great stuff! I have recently adopted a new moisturizer from a very new Italian brand, very expensive but it does everything, it is also slowly taking care of my hyper pigmentation! After one year struggling testing every product available I found this Gattinoni snail cream and in one month, swoosh, new skin.

Now I’m testing stuff for the blog and I can’t wait to go back to my routine.

        • Ah yes. I keep switching my routine up all the time as well, to review new stuff for the blog, and sometimes wonder why I don’t just stick with what makes my skin look its best…

          • Totally!!
On the other hand, testing stuff for the blog that’s how I found my two favorite! So even if there’s a risk, there’s also something good from it!

          • I am way to curious to stop doing it anyway.

  • Looks great to try out! Never seen this brand before 🙂 http://www.bauchlefashion.com/2016/05/sunset-palette.html

  • I rarely like to use a moisturizer in the summer because my face feels all crappy and sweaty but in winters, I love to use thick moisturizer that will keep me hydrated all day without me having to reapply. This product sounds interesting.

    Chaste & Beautiful

    • If you don’t mind me saying, no matter how oily your skin is you should always, always use a moisturizer, every day. There are some really good gel ones that feel completely weightless and won’t make you feel greasy or sticky at all. Not using a moisturizer after cleansing, beyond the dehydration issues that will make your skin look dull, you’re actually keeping your skin in an evil cycle of oil over-production.

      • I politely disagree. I don’t use a moisturizer every day, simply because my skin isn´t dehydrated. And if it is, I find some oils to be more effective than simply a moisturizer. Every skin has different needs, and I don’t think every skin need a moisturizer all the time. You shouldn’t stay away from moisturizing because your face is oily, though, that is a completely different matter and I completely agree with you on this point, Lulle.

    • It isn’t thick, so it probably isn’t what you are looking for come winter.

    • It isn’t thick, so it probably isn’t what you are looking for come winter.

  • Hmm I wouldn’t use it for redness because of the peppermint oil. It’s used in plumping lip glosses so I don’t see how it can do any good to skin suffering from redness!

    Beaumiroir

    • Yes, I think essential oils in general and irritated skin can be a bad combination. And peppermint oil is pretty irritant. But there is research that sows it is soothing when applied in low concentration, just like peppermint tea is soothing for the stomach.
