Alpha-H Essential Hydration Cream

When I was a child, I dreamed of having a twin. That was of course inspired by films and books and included daydreams of funny pranks as well as the romantic illusion that having someone that looked like you was similar to having a soulmate.

Growing up I embraced my uniqueness and learned by observation that just because someone looked similar that didn´t necessarily mean your thoughts were similar as well.

So it is safe to say that ever since I entered adolescence, I prefer things to be easily distinguishable. And that applies to my sisters and me as well as to my creams and lotions.

Because when I received a sample size of the Alpha-H Essential Hydration Cream, I almost chucked it in the bin (the friends and family bin, obviously), because I figured I had tested it before. Packaging, smell and name were way too close to the Alpha-H Daily Essential Moisturizer (Review here) for me to immediately realize it was a whole different product.

But luckily I discovered my mistake and used my face once again for testing purposes.

Exfoliation – Why, when and with what

It is no secret that skin care is my passion. That is probably due to the fact that I am a physician and I love the scientific aspect, but I guess being 37 and always having had problematic skin is a big reason as well.

I believe that no makeup will look good as long as the skin beneath it is neglected, and even though I am not afraid to age (the only way out of it is dying young, you know), I want my skin to look its best at all stages of my life.

Exfoliation 101
Exfoliation 101

Whenever I talk about exfoliation, chemical exfoliation in particular, I get a ton of questions and am asked for recommendations. So I figured it would be best if I sat down and filmed a video, hoping to answer as many questions as possible.

Alpha-H Micro Cleanse – Old habits die hard

I really try to eat healthy. Not only during pregnancy, but all year round. And while I don’t struggle too much with getting my greens in and snacking on fruit and nuts, I do have a sweet tooth.

A big sweet tooth.

To be honest, it is out of control.

The best way to keep it under control? I just don’t buy the stuff. Because if I do, I will end up eating every last bit of it, going back to the sweets drawer numerous times a day purely out of habit.

Same seems to happen when I have a product with physical exfoliant in my bathroom: Even though I vouched to never use one again and instead stick to my chemical peels, I keep going back and reach for it!

Meet Alpha-H Micro Cleanse with glycol acid & rice bran and find out if I regret it as much as last nights bag of potato crisps…

Alpha-H Balancing Cleanser – In love with Aloe vera

Shortly after we moved in together, Mr. Loca and I got into a major fight. Now I should probably mention that we do fight quite often (a fact he blames on me being stubborn and I blame on him for falling in love with a willful woman), but that was one of the major ones.

To be honest, I don’t even remember what caused it, but I remember it ending with slamming doors and me shouting: „And you never even got me flowers once!“ Mature, I know, especially considering the fact that I don’t really care about flowers.

When he returned, he had bought me a plant. Thick, serrated green leaves with teeth on the margin and no flowers to be expected. Aloe vera.

It is one of the few plants that I actually kept alive throughout the years, and one that will always hold a special place in my heart. Which is why whenever I read „Aloe vera“ on a product, it touches a soft spot in an instant.

The latest one? Alpha-H Balancing Cleanser with Aloe vera. Read more

Alpha-H Daily Essential Moisturizer SPF 50+ – The gods are jealous.

The beauty gods are jealous.

After stating numerous times that I rarely needed to moisturize my face at all, only in winter, and then not every day, things began to change.

I hinted it here already, and even though I was still in denial how much my skins needs had already changed, I decided to bring a moisturizer when packing for New Zealand.
And because sunscreen is important, and time, too, I decided to go for Alpha-H´s Daily Essential Moisturizer with an SPF of 50+.

Alpha H Daily Essential Moisturizer SPF 50+

Yes, I know I go on and on about not getting your SPF from your moisturizer, and I still believe that you will never get the protection written on the bottle, just because you use too little, but even a little SPF first thing in the morning is welcome when you spend the whole day outside, and I was lazy and yes, I burnt my nose.
Badly.

What Alpha-H claims:
Provides waterproof, broad-spectrum sun damage protection at SPF 50 without feeling heavy or looking chalky on your skin.
Suitable for all skin types, even combination/oily, it strikes the perfect balance between long-lasting hydration and a non-greasy, barely-there texture making it the perfect base for makeup.

Facts:
The product comes in a squeeze tube, different from the one I show in pictures (mine was part of a gift set) and contains 50 ml of product.
It retails for 40 € on the Cult Beauty website.

Alpha-H Daily Essential Moisturizer

Favorable ingredients:
– Cera Alba (Bees Wax): Smoothing
– Hydroxyethylcellulose: Firming
– Tocopherol (Vitamin E): Antioxydant
– Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract: Moisturizing

Unfavorable Ingredients:
– Mineral Oil: I have talked about the disadvantages of mineral oil here. „Clogs pores“
– Parabenes: Disturbing hormonal balance in animal studies, no effect on humans proven

The used sunscreen is a chemical one, Octocrylene, so no risk for flash back or white cast.
Most reviews I read said it dried down to a semi-matte finish, but that didn’t happen with me.
My face looked pretty „glowy“ after application. Not greasy, but powder-worthy.

Does it live up to its claims?
Most of them.
It is non-greasy, after it sunk in it felt lightweight, there is no chalky overcast to your face after you used it and it sits well under makeup.
But I don’t think it is suitable for all skin types. At the end of our holiday, after two long flights and lots of air-condition, my skin was dry. No more combination, I am talking dry as in dry, flakey patches on my cheeks and neck, and tightness everywhere else.
So I can tell you first hand: If your skin is severely dry/dehydrated, this moisturizer isn’t going to do the job.

Will I rebuy?
No.
I like it, it is a decent product, but in the end it didn’t wow me.
And I don’t like using mineral oil based products, even though it isn’t that bad when it is the last layer put on my face, so I will look for an alternative.

Who do I recommend it to?

If you have oily/combination or normal skin and like to save the extra step with SPF in the morning, this is for you.
Girls with dry/dehydrated skin, go get something else.
Have you tried this product yet?
