Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay in Place Concealer – Marks all over my face

As long as I can remember, I had marks on my face.

When I was a baby, I had seborrheic eczema on my cheeks for some time. Harmless, but not very pretty.

When I reached the age of eleven, the first spots made their appearance, and despite (or maybe because of) my frantic attempts to get rid of them, continued to expand from my forehead all over my face.

When I reached the age of twenty, I figured my skin would get better, but the joys of adolescence seamlessly blended in with upcoming adult acne. Less spots, but deep set, cystic ones that left hyper pigmentation and red marks when they finally went away.

These days I am pretty much at peace with my skin and my breakouts, but while I do my best to make the marks fade, that process takes time and patience. So I rely on concealer in the meantime. Preferably a concealer that blends seamlessly, doesn’t cake and stays in place all day.

Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay in Place Flawless Wear Concealer SPF 10 claims all that, so of course I had to give it a go.

What Estée Lauder claims:

Looks flawless. Lasts 15-hours. Feels comfortable, never dry. Stays seamless, without creasing.
The lightweight creme formula creates the perfected look of flawless skin and lasts all day. Transfer-resistant, color-true, with medium buildable coverage that won’t slip, slide or melt away. Luminous finish.

Infused with minerals and emollients to condition skin and make blending easy. Oil-free. Water, perspiration and humidity-resistant.

Facts:

One tub contains 7 ml (0.25 fl oz), which are available for 30€ here or for 24 $ on Sephora here. While you get a total of ten colors in the US, there are only three different ones in Germany, all of which are targeted at lighter skin tones.

The „precision applicator“ is a doe foot applicator, suitable to apply straight to your face. For hygienic reasons I prefer to apply it to the back of my hand first and then either use my fingers or a brush from there.

Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay in Place Concealer
Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay in Place Concealer

Just like claimed above, it feels lightweight and comfortable and is blended in easily.

The coverage itself is actually medium to full and the finish very natural. For demonstration purposes I used a birthmark on the back of my hand.

I am not too pleased with the wear time though. It may be due to my skin type or due to the fact that I (unknowing) touch my face more often than I should, but I feel the need to reconceal my spots after an average of four hours (Setting powder used, but no primer.)

Does it live up to its claims?

Most of them.

It is comfortable, non-creasing, lightweight, seamless to blend and has a luminous finish. But it doesn’t even come near the claimed 15 hours of wear.

Will I rebuy?

Probably not.

Just to put it out there: I have never found a concealer that lasts a full working day on my face, so it is most likely my fault, but for 30€ I want everything. So my search will continue.

Who do I recommend it to?

I think this is perfect for people with dry skin or prone to creasing, and I can imagine it will last a lot longer on their skin.

As it doesn’t settle into fine lines or pores, it is also a great product for more mature skins.

Have you tried this before?

And when was the last time you were completely satisfied with your makeup-free skin?

  • I have heard so many great things about this concealer and the double wear foundation. I haven’t tried it yet but am planning to buy this when my current one runs out. Gemma x

    • I am still planning to use the Double Wear Foundation as well. What are you currently using?

      • At the moment a Clinique one that I have had for ages, it’s almost gone. It’s not that good to be honest but have been trying to use it up before I buy a new one. This Double Wear one seems to be talked about the most so I will try it. Gemma x

        • I have read a lot about it as well, and I need a full coverage foundation for filming, so I plan on getting it someday soon.

  • The last time I was completely satisfied with my makeup-free skin was probably in my early 20’s, I never really had any breakouts until then. I was on birth control for a few years in my late teens/early 20’s and when I discontinued it I started getting a few spots especially in my chin area, so I though the pill had caused some sort of hormonal imbalance. It’s been 7 years and my skin hasn’t really improved, so maybe it would’ve happened anyway, even if I hadn’t been on the pill… I’ve heard many people saying they had better skin as teenagers than in their 20s or 30s.
As for this concealer, I did use it years ago, but only in the eye area, since I didn’t have much else to cover. I find that on my face drier concealers tend to last longer. My favorites are the Vichy Dermablend stick concealer and the Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage.
    http://carolinapage.eu

    • I haven’t tried any of them, but they are on my list.
I have been on birth control from age 14 up until I wanted to get pregnant, and I got on the pill for skin reasons in the first place. These deep set hormonal spots really respond very well to that, so I will get back on birth control as soon as I am done with having children for sure.

  • I tried this one before and I personally found that it tends to highlight my fine lines and dry out my under eye area a bit, but I used to love this one for concealing my little spots, yet I agree that, in terms of longevity, this isn’t the best one I could find! I believe the only reason why I haven’t repurchased it is that the lightest shade is still a little bit too dark for me in winter, I can’t believe that, while they are 10 shades in the US, we only get 3 shades here!

    http://fannyanddailybeauty.com

    • Yes, it is way too dark for me now as well. The limitation in shade range is pretty annoying!
I didn’t use it under my eyes too much, as I need something that is peach/yellow based there and stays put!

I think 15 hours is a very long time for any concealer to last. I haven’t yet found anything that can last that long. My holy grail concealer in Clarins Instant Concealer – it has great coverage and it’s moisturizing, it doesn’t cake on the skin and it really brightens the complexion. It’s 15ml too which is a lot of product for concealer. Great review, very thorough!

    • I have heard great things about that one, but never tried it myself. And yes, 15 hours is a bold claim, and way longer than I need my face stuff to last anyway, but I figure if they claim that, it should at least live up to it and last all day! The Collection Lasting Perfection does last all day on me, but then again the coverage is only medium…

      • Athena Politou

You are right, especially when they charge you 30 euros for 7ml, the product should live up to its claims. Unfortunately good concealers are hard to come by. Collection is not available here sadly, I’ve heard such good things about it *insert sad emoji*
        x

        • I did get the concealer when I traveled to New Zealand, Collection isn’t available in Germany as well. But Boots (and a blogger friend) ship from the UK, so I know I will be able to repurchase.

  • Sounds pretty good to me! But yeah, try the new one next, I think that one might perform and last just the way you want!

  • I’ve actually pondered on wether or not I should buy this concealer, but I don’t think I am. If it doesn’t live up to most of its claims and for that amount of money, I don’t think I’ll actually invest in it. Like you, since I was a child I’ve hard marks on my face because I’ve had acne since I was one. And I didn’t take care of them as well as I should have – so now all I do is search for the right products and I too have been looking for a good concealer. I just don’t think this is the one for me, just like it’s not the one for you either.

But it does look pretty on the skin, honestly.
    Ella Pinto xx

    • It does. I just wish it would be more long-lasting, the finish and coverage are perfect.

  • I’ve been using the one from MAC PRO Longwear for too long already but I noticed my under eye area is creasing lately. I should try a new brand like this one.

    • That one didn’t crease on me, not even on my aging under eyes…

  • Amazing concealer.
Mine is getting empty and thinking of trying other brand
I might reach this one soon.

ive never found a long lasting concealer either. This is a tad expensive for what it is. I use urban decay and that is the best one ive used so far. I have the double wear foundation though and i love it.

    • The UD Naked Concealer is already waiting in my drawer to be used, I am excited to see how I get on with it.

  • I don’t remember the last time I was happy with my makeup free face…and recently I have not been happy with any of my concealers. I did try a new MUFE concealer at Sephora and I really liked it.

    Agata http://herandmakeup.com

  • I’m sorry this one didn’t work out for you. The birth mark test looked so promising, but the fact that it only lasted 4 hours before needing to be reapplied is disappointing.

    http://themakeuptrain.com/2016/02/08/review-tarte-poppy-picnic-amazonian-clay-eye-and-cheek-palette/

    • The coverage and finish are lovely, just the staying power was a disappointment.

  • That coverage is really impressive! It’s a shame that it wasn’t more lasting, though, especially for that price. I am both contend and not content with my skin most days. Apart from when I get stupid hormone-related spots I don’t mind to go without much face makeup. I get a lot of black heads but I find them so impossible to deal with I just pretend they’re not there, haha.

    Erin
    http://sexycardi.blogspot.ca

    • Concealers don’t really help with blackheads, so I´d most likely do the same. What kind of skincare regime have you tried to minimize them?

      • I’ve largely tried facial scrubs – two from Saint Ives particularly (they work well for other areas, but not my nose?) and blackhead-specific astringents as well. Not a lot of luck!

        • Have you ever considered a chemical exfoliant?

          • I’ve found them too intimidating in name to just try, you know? Any suggestions? 🙂

          • I did a whole series of blog posts on them a while back, just search „Acid Toning Week“. But I mean to do an updated video on them soon. And by soon I mean somewhen this year.
They are much less intimidating than using an actual scrub, once you understand what they do.

  • I remember liking this a few years ago, but I haven’t felt the need to repurchase it.
The only thing that worked on spot marks for me is Effaclar Duo +, and I really need to start using it again as hormonal breakouts are back (the joys of coming off the pill) and they love to leave marks. I usually don’t bother too much covering them completely, I simply tone them down with foundation most days.
Gyudy @ Gyudy’s Notes Of Beauty

    • Ah, yes, that is my problem as well. Everything is fine as long as I am on the pill, but with pregnancy, breastfeeding and the time in between my skin did get so many of these pesky hormonal spots, and they all leave a mark that stays forever!

  • It covers your freckle very well! I’m impressed. It’s a shame that it doesn’t last the whole day, I don’t believe I’ve ever found one that does either. I believe I’m moving into the adult-acne phase so I’m trying to take steps to prevent the red marks- is there anything in particular you would recommend for that?

    http://www.lindseyginge.com

    • Chemical exfoliants, retinol based treatments (opt for rosehip oil if you want to stay natural/organic) and skincare containing niacin amide are what I like best. Oh, and sun screen. I don’t think anything can really prevent these red marks, but they will go away much faster when using these products.

      • Thank you! I’ve been wondering about Rose Hip oil, but I’ll definitely have to try that out! That’s true, prevention is the best method!

        • Rose Hip oil contains a form of Vitamin A (which I only found out recently) without being chemically altered. It is quite gentle and thus of course less effective as prescription strength Vitamin A, but a great way to start. And I remember you are very well aware of what goes into your skincare/makeup 😉

  • I actually have this one and quite like it. I too have had to come to terms with adult acne and hyperpigmentation, and I am always on the look out for great concealers. I like that it does not crease (unlike my nars one) and lasts (on me) quite a few hours. Also, here in my corner of the worldm we too are lucky enough to only have 3 shades available /sarcasm

The next concealers that I am going to try are the new UD naked one and the clarins, as both are said to be quite pigmented and longlasting

    • I love the coverage and the texture, I just feel like it is gone so quickly on me! I am not looking for 15+ hours, but a working day should be covered.
At the moment I am using a Covergirl one which really stays put all day, but the coverage is only medium…
The UD one is waiting in my drawer already.

  • Sounds like a nice enough concealer. I haven’t really tried anything from Estee Lauder, but I heard a lot of good things 🙂

    -Leta | The Nerdy Me

  • That sounds pretty good – I touch my face a lot as well so it might not last too long but the coverage while it lasts looks amazing!

    Emma | http://www.fluffandfripperies.com

  • I have hyper-pigmentation that is caused by hormones and I’ve never found anything that I was truly happy with. My latest one is actually Bobbi Brown’s foundation stick, which is as good as it gets, really. Dermablend’s correcting stick was good but the colours weren’t amazing. As for when was the last time I was happy with my make up free face, despite the marks on my face I have become more and more comfortable not wearing make up as I get older. I don’t look in the mirror and think Wow! but I regularly go to places where I may bump into lots of people I know without wearing any make up.

    sunshineandglow.blogspot.com

    • I don’t wear a full face when I go out on a daily basis, but I like to cover my spots when I am out working, especially if they are the big, red, hormonal ones, and I want something to last throughout the work day without me needing to touch up. The Collection one lasts all day, but the coverage is only medium. I prefer that over the full coverage that only lasts a short time, but you know, I am still looking for the one that does everything!

  • This seems like a great product in terms of coverage, I just wish it wasn’t so expensive ♥

    Beautylymin

    • Yes, I love it. It really stays out all day, but the coverage is only medium. But it is my favorite concealer at the moment and even made it into my 2015 makeup favorites.

  • I love this. It is perfect for concealing. Would love to give it a try
    wendeeisaacs.com

  • This concealer sounded really promising and the coverage is certainly nice. Bummer that it didn’t last that long for you. I do have dry skin so I may have to check this one out. I’ve been pretty satisfied with my makeup free skin lately thanks to regular facial masking. I went out 3 times in the last 2 weeks w/o any makeup at all.

    • I do go out not wearing makeup as well, but the spot marks do bother me whenever I catch a glimpse at myself in the mirror.

  • I surprised it doesn’t last longer! Have you tried the Lancome one? I can’t remember the name of the famous one. It’s good at blemishes as is NARS RCC.

    • I havent tired any of them. I wanted to pick up the NARS one recently, but they were out of any shade that came close to matching my skin.

  • thefashionsalt

This sounds like a great concealer for my dry skin. I’ve been searching for one that doesn’t crease, or make me break out. And I was satisfied being make up free until 4 years ago. I noticed spots and dark circles that progressively grew. Unfortunately before that I took my skin for granted and didn’t take good care of it.

    • The things we take for granted…
It has a lovely texture for dry skin and really doesn’t crease on me, so it could work very well for you.

  • I want to try this, but not if the concealer doesn’t last all day, I probably won’t bother. . Have you tried MAC prolong wear concealer? It stays all day on me. I do have to set it because I have many fine lines, but it doesn’t fade.

    • I remember using some MAC concealers a while back and not being too enthusiastic, but I cant remember which ones exactly. I will add it to my list of concealers to check out.

  • Arya Elsa Jose

wonderful! I am desperately in need of a good concealer, this sounds just perfect!

  • This reminded me to re-start using mine, i went trough a phase when i only used DW concealer. I have a limited edition one with a lipgloss on one end.

    • A concealer paired with a lip gloss? That is an odd combination.

  • I really wonder how they come up with that wear time. Lasting for 15 hours is quite a promise yet I am sure all these big promises is a part of an advertisement. I am impressed with the coverage tho, I wish these products would be cheaper in Europe. Last time I’ve enjoyed makeup free skin was last summer, where I had no breakouts. I actually like being makeup free, and the good thing is then people don’t believe me when I tell my age 🙂

    Ela BellaWorld

    • I like being makeup free as well, but covering up marks and spots helps me when I am feeling a little under the weather. The Collection one really lasts all day on me, but it only offers a medium coverage, so I guess there is a downside to everything.

Liebe Anne, vielleicht sollte ich es doch auch mal mit Concealer versuchen, und da er offenbar zu meiner Haut passt mit diesem. • Estee Lauder actually just released a new concealer here in the US, the Double Wear waterproof Extreme Wear or something like that. It might be a better fit for you, and I’m sure it will make its way towards Europe if it hasn’t already. I hope they export more shades because 3 to choose from is quite terrible…

  • I’ve thought about this concealer before, but I wasn’t a fan of the DW foundation so that has always held me back. Seeing as you think it may be better for drier skin, I might consider again. I have never had too much luck with doe foot concealers and usually prefer cream/stick ones.
    thebeautybloss.com

    • I feel like the cream/stick ones are so heavy on my skin, but they are probably more long wearing because of that.

      • I don’t find them so heavy on the skin, but I do find them more emollient and nourishing, or at least the ones I’ve tried and like. I haven’t had great experiences with liquid concealers, I feel like they are a bit drying and can get a bit cakey on me. Perhaps I just haven’t found the right one?

        • I guess our skin type is just very different. Dry skin has rarely been an issue, but oiliness, so we are probably just looking for different things.

  • Similar to yourself I haven’t come across a long-lasting concealer and I don’t think this would be suited to my skin, as mine is a combination of oily and normal…(P.s my immunosuppressants work and all my allergy symptoms have vanished!!!!)
