Have we met before? – A dupe for Clarins Instant Light Natural Lip Perfectors

I am pretty good at remembering faces, but struggle with knowing where exactly I have met the people attached to them.

Same is true when it comes to makeup.
I know what something looks like, but the actual brand sometimes eludes me.

So when I saw Nastasja from Eyes Painted Black writing about the new Catrice  Beautifying Lip Smoothers, I knew I had seen something similar before.
But it took me a second before I realized what they reminded me of:
The hyped Instant Light Natural Lip Perfectors by Clarins.

Clarins Instant Light Natural Lip Perfectors above, Catrice Beautifying Lip Smoothers below

Can you spot a difference? Of course you can, but hey: Not twins maybe, but sisters for sure!

But even though it is makeup, it isn’t all about the looks.
Inner values count, too.
So lets look at:

The facts:
I have written a long (and quite disappointed) blog post on the Clarins Instant Light Natural Lip Perfectors here, if you fancy reading more about them, but I´ll include the key points again.

One tube of Clarins retails for 17,50 € while containing 12 ml of product.
One tube of Catrice, on the other hand, retails for 3,49 € while containing 9 ml of product.
Now let me quickly do the maths for you:
1ml Clarins equals 1,46€.
1ml Catrice equals 0,39€.

Clarins offers a variety of six different shades, while Catrice only does three: 010 Sweet Caramel, 020 Apricot Cream and 030 Cake Pop.
I got 020 Apricot Cream, to compare it to the Instant Light Natural Lip Perfector in 02 Apricot Shimmer.

The applicators. Again, Clarins on top, Catrice below.

While the Clarins ones smell incredible, like Cotton Candy, the Catrice ones don’t have a strong scent on their own, but taste just as sweet as the Clarins ones do.

Now let´s see how they look on my lips:

Clarins Instant Light Natural Lip Perfector in 02 Apricot Shimmer

Catrice Beautifying Lip Smoother in 20 Apricot Cream

To be honest, I had to mark these picture really good, because I am not able to tell the difference once they are on my lips, at least look wise.

As far as longevity and moisturizing effects go, the Clarins ones definitely make the cut. They are noticeable on the lips for about an hour longer and seem to sooth severely cracked lips a little better, but again the difference isn’t a big one.

Would I rebuy?
I have told you I don’t like spending so much money on a tinted lip balm, so I wouldn’t go out and get another Clarins Instant Light Natural Lip Perfector, but I can totally justify spending the money on the Catrice Beautifying Lip Smoothers.

Who do I recommend it to?
If you love the Clarins Instant Light Natural Lip Perfectors, these are your perfect, budget friendly dupes.
And if, like me, you were disappointed because you expected to get more for your money, these are just what you need. The same performance for a fraction of the price.

How about you:
Is it the name that counts?
Or are you just so in love with the Cotton Candy smell that this is worth paying triple the money?

  • Yeah, I have read on several blogs that these two make fantastic dupes!

  • Oh wow, that's insane, you can really not tell the difference! Great review once again. I actually hate scented lip glosses or anything scented so haha

  • The Beauty Highlights

They both look same on. Great dupe.

  • Oooooh I love this dupe! Unfortunately catrice is only available through online retailers here so I will have to go and browse them and see what they retail for here

  • Aah that's still very similar though. I really like the Clarins one though, I have the darker nude shade, it's just perfect! ^_^

  • I like my Clarins ones, too, but I wouldn't buy them again, too pricey in my opinion.

  • They should be available online soon, as they are out in the stores for quite some time now. Have you tried the Clarins ones?

  • Ich wäre nie auf die Idee gekommen, ein Dupe zu suchen, aber so finde ich das echt gut. Und Clarins ist mir echt zu teuer, da bin ich bei Dir.

  • I can't tell them apart when applied, even in real life. Have you tried the Clarins ones?

  • I love their skincare. Their makeup usually looks great, too, but I haven tried anything else yet.

  • I love their blushes, too. What is our favorite Catrice product?

  • Thank you.

  • If you dislike scents, both of them are not going to work for you.
Any makeup that is scented or even skincare?

  • I wouldn't have thought of trying them if I hadn't seen them at Nastasja´s blog. She is a big enabler!

  • Nope, the truth is that I very seldom use balms. I have the nuxe reve de miel, a nivea one and the mac prep and prime. I am covered. But for such an affordable price I could be tempted hehe

  • Nuxe Reve de Miel is a staple for me, too. It saves my lips from going all gross during winter.

  • You weren't kidding about both being the same, I can't tell any differences at all. I wish Catrice is available here in Canada, we have Essence but the local drugstore in my town doesn't even carry the latest Summer Essence products. It's disappointing. I have only tried Catrice foundation which I LOVE and lip pencil which is also great. I wasn't too impressed by the mascara but then again, my lashes are almost impossible to deal with.

I'm not bothered by name brand when it comes to makeup, I 90% use drugstore anyway especially with drugstore brands really upping their game in the past few years. I do splurge on skincare though.

  • I love the Clarins lip perfectors – I got a free one once at the Clarins counter with some other products and have been meaning to buy a replacement since. I thought it was a gorgeous balm x

  • Oh my goodness. I've always bemoaned the lack of Catrice here, but this makes me feel a little sadder it isn't available here! I would totally be all over these, they sound like a wonderful product.

  • I've never tried the Clarins lip product, because they are just so dang expensive! I also don't like to spend a lot of money on any lip product whatsoever. I've never heard of the Catrice brand so I'll have to look and see if it's available in the US. Great review! 🙂

  • these look so similar, it's always great to find an affordable dupe for a high end product x

    natasha // eyebrows, inc.

  • What a great dupe! I would like to try it! 😀

  • It's crazy! They both have the same packaging too!!!

  • It is the name sometimes, if you trust the brand! But if the products are similar then what's the point?

Read the newes post on my blog! Bangs Bang | Bloglovin

  • I go for names in skincare often, because I know by now which brands will deliver regarding ingredients, but in makeup I usually don't care.

  • Australia is also very restricted when it comes to available brands, isn't it?

  • Yes, if the Catrice one wasn't slightly smaller, you couldn't tell them apart.

  • Can you get Catrice where you live?

  • Yes, I am pretty happy when ever that happens. Or someone tells me about one, which is far more often.
Do you have any high end dupes to share?

  • I fear they are not available in the US, at least this is what Agata said.

  • So you are a lipgloss/ tinted lip balm fan?

  • I like them more than I thought I would, but they are just so dang expensive!

  • Oh, thank you.

  • Same here: I invest in skincare, but I do love me some drugstore makeup. MAC being the exception, I guess. Apart from that drugstore usually does the trick for me. I don't own any Tom Ford, Chanel, YSL and the likes.
What is the one makeup brand you would splurge on?

  • Great dupe post! These look so similar it's unbelievable. It's always good if there's quality alternatives to high end products.

  • Charlotte Tilbury! Her makeup line is launching in Canada this month and I am hoping (praying) that my husband won't roll his eyes when I purchase some. Haha! There have been so many bloggers raving about her eyeshadow quads and lipsticks so I am looking forward to try some.

  • I am so jealous! CT makeup is drool worthy for the packaging alone, all this pretty rose gold bling.
Your husband has to understand, it is research after all!

  • I've used that excuse one too many times! Haha! And Christmas is still too damn far away…

  • yay for cheaper dupes! Ive seen other products by Catrice that also had me going "oh i wish we had that here" 🙁 Enjoy!!

  • Wow If I hadn't looked twice I would of thought they were the same product!

  • To be honest I wouldn´t spend that much money on a lip balm if it was eyeshadows or lipstick
maybe I would I would make that purchase. There´s so much lip balms outthere that are high performance and still not that expensive if you know what I mean.
Great great review though! x http://catheartbudget.blogspot.com

  • Jamie RS

great review! this product looks great and sounds amazing! 🙂

    Love Peace and Shimmer

  • I think most times performance beats a name. But I won't lie and say that I haven't spent extra on something because it was a brand I knew and trusted rather than buying a similar product from a brand I've never heard of. Hope I didn't lose you there lol.

Both of those look VERY similar though! If they're sisters they're definitely twins!

  • To be perfectly honest, the name does count for me… But then if Catrice was available here, I probably would never buy the Clarins version again. So the price counts too, and maybe a little more than the name 🙂

  • Yes it is! It's getting a little better but it's still not as good as other countries!

  • I was shocked when I saw the prices you have to pay. I would be broke in a second.

  • Birthday? Anniversary? Mothers Day? Mid Year Celebration?

  • I think If something is As pretty and effective as the

  • You do? Please share, I need to know more !

  • I am with you. Trust in a name can convince us to spend a little something extra, and I guess with good reason most of the time.

  • It is. Have you tried the Clarins one?

  • You are right, but they are hyped everywhere, so I wanted to try them.
What lip balm do you like most?

  • Yes, especially If they are so similar.
    Have you tried Catrice before?

  • One of the few brands we can get here mit everyone else gets. They have some lovely stuff. What did you see and love?

  • I bet it would look great on you, too.

  • Thank you.

  • Ja, nicht wahr? Bekommt ihr Catrice in England?

  • Me too. I can barely tell them apart in my handbag. Do you know the Clarins one?

  • I like the maybelline ones babylips, I got one lipbalm from H&M very very moisturizing!I like the labello one too! x

  • I've watched the clarions one before and thought it was a gorgeous color!

  • I have to try the Babylips one day.

  • Jaa

I remember seeing Catrice makeup here so I'll check it out! I guess I can do without the wonderful smell if it means same performance and a fraction of the cost! ;D The applicator is interesting. Very much like those Too Faced's Melted Lipsticks!

  • Crazy, isn't it?!

  • Absolutely. But other than that, i really enjoyed my stay.

  • Анна-Алина Гевелюк

I have a lipstick that look almost the same and love it!

  • Ah, which brand?

  • I haven't tried those yet. What do they smell like?

  • Ah! I totally see the resemblance. I think spending a lot of money on a (softly) tinted lip balm is also… meh. I'd prefer to go for the budget friendly dupe 😀 Honestly. From the looks of it I barely notice the differences.. and I'm very happy with how the lip smoother by Catrice feels on my lips!

  • Happy to help 😛 haha

  • Yes, I can count on you for that.

  • Hello Linda! I've finally read this post 🙂 and I'm amazed at how the Catrice lipgloss looks like the Clarins one! Frm the packaging to the effect on your lips, it's an incredible dupe. I'm not sure I can get Catrice products where I am, but I'll surely get my hand on this lipgloss when I can!

  • Catrice isnt widely available, which is a shame. You are from France, aren't you?

  • Yes I am! I don't think I can find Catrice in supermarkets and shops here, it's not a very famous brand… But who knows, maybe in the future it'll become better known and will be sold in more places.

  • But from Paris it is just a short train ride to Germany, and Catrice is available there in any DM.

  • Rosy Flynn

Well this is definitely something I need to get my hands on, I can’t believe how similar they are!

Rosy | Sparkles of Light Blog

    • Absolutely. Do you get Catrice in the UK?

      • Rosy Flynn

Yes it’s been here for 3-4 years now I think 🙂

        • Great, I didn’t know that!

          • Rosy Flynn

Oh goodness ignore me I’m getting confused between catrice and Essence haha

          • Ah, okay. That is a shame, they do have lovely stuff at a great price!
