Inspired by … Chanel Le Rouge Fall 2016

If you are not familiar with the „Inspired by…“ series, click here for an explanation.
But short story even shorter, each month I choose a seasonal ad and try to recreate the models look with colors I already own.
Dressing up and awkward posing included!

Inspired by Chanel Le Rouge Fall 2016
Chanel Le Rouge Fall 2016

As soon as I laid eyes on this picture, I knew I wanted to recreate the look. But I was facing a big problem: I did own barely any reddish eyeshadows at all. The solution? Using lipsticks, which I own in any shade of red as you might know.

So please follow my tutorial at your own risk and after careful consideration: Lipsticks are not meant to go near the eye and may cause serious irritation!

Here is my finished look. Using Bobbi Brown for the posing instead of Chanel, simply because I don´t own any.

  • The Chanel ad looks incredible. Lots of warm red tones which I hope I can recreate as well. They look fantastic. It’s so cool you used red lipsticks though I’m curious if it’s eye-safe.

    • I usually don´t give too much attention to whether or not something is considered „safe“. Even though I wear contacts I barely ever have eye irritation, so the only thing I´d stop at is probably glitter. I wore this makeup for five hours without any issues.

  • You totally made the lippies work! Red suits you. I actually own quite a bit of reddish eyeshadows, I love ‚em. I’m not a Kirsten Stewart fan, but she looks good in this campaign. And you did a great job recreating the look.

    • I am not a big fan of her either, never seen the Twilight movies, to be honest, but I really liked the look.

  • At first I wasn’t sure about red/orange makeup, but now I am really tempted to give it a try. It would brighten up a gloomy day 🙂 Red suits you, since red is trendy this year, you should get some red and create a really glam makeup 🙂 Also Mr. Loca did a great job with this photo, it looks amazing! Did you just use one light?

    Ela BellaWorld

    • No, we used one studio light for direct lighting and one to brighten the background a little.

  • I can see why you wanted to recreate this ad. You might not have had any red eyeshadow handy, but you really made the lipstick work. Beautiful!

After this shoot, do you see yourself going out to buy more reddish shadows any time soon?

    • I don´t see me buying any new makeup anytime soon, I still haven´t unpacked everything I own, but if I do I can see myself reaching for a reddish brown to wear this fall.

  • Toyas Tales

I do not own reddish brown eye shadow either. I always was to scared to purchase them because I thought when applied it might make me look sickly. I actually prefer the lipstick you used on your eyes instead. The color when applied was soft and pretty.

    • It is a lovely color to wear on the lips as well, though I think I will reach for it more in the fall. For me black liner does the trick: If I wear it, I don’t look like I cried all night, which can happen with reds.

  • I’m really tempted to pick up a few things from the collection but I’m trying to be good. We all know I don’t need it. Some of the stuff is permanent so there’s time. I love the Rouge Allure Velvet formula so I may breakdown and get a lipstick. Lol. Love the look you created as always. Red on the eyes is surprisingly flattering.

  • i adore kristen stewart, she’s so gorgeous! and this makeup looks really great on you, i’m scared to try reddish or pinkish eyeshadows but you’ve made it look so nice, i’m inspired!

    • Give it a go, and if it only is lipstick to see if it works for you in color without buying an eyeshadow. If you pair it with a black liner and lots of mascara it will look amazing.

  • I’m so excited for the Le Rouge collection!! The eyeshadow quad looks gorgeoussss! And I think they have a really nice nude lipstick shade, as well. Chanel always nails it. 😍

    • I actually don’t own any Chanel makeup with the exception of one nail polish.

    • I will pass on the compliment, All I did was stand there and try not to move.

  • Oh wow I’ve never though of use lipstick as eyeshadow before! Guess it would work in a pinch, although not an ideal long-term solution.

    • It stayed put quite well maybe because it was so creamy, ad I had no irritation.

    • I don’t really follow her or her style, but the look was so gorgeous. Do you wear red eyeshadows?

      • I’m more of a red lip kinda girl and simple on the eyes, but oh my u definitely suit the red eye shadow look!x

        • I am totally into red lips as well. Lucky for me, otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to film that.

  • I think I’d add a hint more brown to the eyes to get a little more dimension. The colors are great for you though. Do you think you’ll pick up anything from the collection? I’m worried the quad is too warm for me, but I’m digging two of the lipsticks, one of the liners, and possibly the blush. I didn’t like last years Chanel fall at all for my coloring and this year is a toss up. They always put out such as nice fall collection even if it doesn’t work for me though.

    • I am really tempted by the quad, because it is proven by this video that I don’t own similar colors. It is quite a splurge though, so I am not really sure.

  • Caliope Couture

Großartiger Look! Bei mir sammeln sich langsam richtig viele rötliche Lidschatten an. Ich sollte mich wohl auch mal an so einem Look versuchen 😉

  • Kay (shoesandglitter)

I’m a huge fan of eyeshadows with a little reddish tint! It’s difficult to find good ones, though, and they can be difficult to wear for obvious reasons. Cocoa Blend by Zoeva palette has the most gorgeous red shade ever, and that’s the one I always go for if I’m feeling a little brave! <3 Loving this series, as always. x

      • yeah, but I’m still looking for matching red. I used one from my friend’s collection but it ended up not good – I looked as if I had fever or something

    • Danke Dir! Wann kommt den von Dir wieder was Neues? Ich bin schon ganz gespannt.

  • That’s actually pretty clever to use lipsticks in place of the red eyeshadow. Definitely more economical than buying a red shadow just for this purpose.

    • It is the aim of this series to recreate a look without buying something new, but I am still tempted to buy a red eyeshadow now, I liked the look so much.

The video was amazing, Anne! I knew I would love it from the first few seconds 🙂 You made me laugh at the „that’s not going to work“ trying to come up with an intro haha. The look was recreated very very well and you’re so clever for finding the alternative for the eyeshadow! Good reds aren’t the easy pigments to find when it comes to shadows and lipstick is a smart one-off option!

Kay recommended a great budget red shadow in one of her recent reviews, and I am tempted to pick that up. Or the original Chanel quad, of course…

  • What a brilliant idea with using the lipsticks as eyeshadows! We both know you have plenty of red ones! I think this look suits you beautifully and you should wear it out! How did the lipsticks stay on your eyes? Did they crease?

I really wanted that Chanel quad but the shades are pretty dupable. There is a gorgeous red eyeliner in this collection though!

    Agata http://herandmakeup.com

    • No, they didn´t, at least not for the four hours I was wearing this makeup. They did in fact work as good as my cream eyeshadows, even better than some I have tried, after they were set with the powder shadows.
The quad is actually tempting me, I like the colors so much!
