Sometimes it is a product name that gets me.
Sumptuous…
I immediately think of a spa night, luxurious oils and someone offering me fruit slices, a fantasy that could not be further off my current evening routine.
Instead of a spa night it is the wading pool with my daughter, instead of luxurious oils it is nappy cream and instead of being offered fruit slices I get cucumber thrown at me. Which I sliced and offered myself, obviously.

So I decided I needed a little more sumptuousness in my life and bought The Body Shop Camomile Sumptuous Cleansing Butter
What The Body Shop claims:
This cleanser is an indulgent makeup remover for the whole face. It gently and efficiently melts away makeup and impurities, leaving the skin feeling clean, refreshed and pampered.
– Gently melts away makeup
– Leaves skin feeling clean and petal-soft
– Removes all types of makeup
– Suitable for sensitive skin and contact lens wearers
Facts:
One pot contains 90 ml and retails for 13 € at The Body Shop stores/ online. By the time I was writing this review it was marked as “sold out”, so I dug up another link on Amazon here.
They sell it for 17 € though, so better check out your local stores.
The cleanser itself comes in a tin container that is sturdy but lightweight and great for traveling. Despite being named a butter it is hard to the touch (think coconut oil), but easy to scoop out and quickly to melt on your skin into a rich, oily texture. “Oily” is used in the best way possible here, it doesn’t feel greasy or heavy, but very soft.

After massaging it onto my face for a little while I take it off with a wash cloth and warm water. There is no oily residue left on my skin and my face feels soft and nourished.
I got it to use as a second cleanse, as I take my makeup off with Bioderma Eau Sensibio, but for research reasons I have used it to remove my makeup and it did do very well, but with some difficulties when it came to lip stains or waterproof mascara.
The scent is a soft floral note that doesn’t remind me of camomile too much.
Favorable ingredients:

– Shea Butter: Moisturizing
– Tocopherol: Vitamin E, antioxidant
– Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil: Rich in fatty acids, cleansing
– Anthemis Nobilis Flower Extract: Camomille, soothing
Unfavorable Ingredients:
– Fragrance
Does it live up to its claims?
Yes.
It melts away makeup, my skin feels soft and clean after using it and it is certainly suitable for contact lenses wearers. If you are sensitive to fragrance though, I would patch test first.
Will I rebuy?
I don’t think so.
Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoy using it and it is packed with great ingredients, but among the other balm cleansers I have tried so far (Clinique, Review here, and Emma Hardie), I just prefer them.
Who do I recommend it to?
It is one of the more affordable balm cleansers, so if you are on a budget and want to invest in a good balm cleanse, this one might be a good choice.
If your skin is dry, the nourishing ingredients will help you cleanse your skin without stripping it.
If you are looking for a product suitable as first and second cleanse, this one is well worth looking into.
It is a great everyday basic cleanser.
But if, like me, you are looking for more sumptuousness in your life, look somewhere else.
This is more camomile tea than champagne.
