M. Asam Pure Vitamins Retinol Youth Concentrate – New experiences.

I have to admit, when I first started using the M. Asam Pure Vitamins Retinol Youth Concentrate *, I was a little at loss. I had only Sunday Riley Luna to compare it to, and as you can read here that one left me a little confused about the hype. Now I had another retinol on my hands, claiming to be gentle and suitable for sensitive skin, and while I couldn´t disagree with that, I just had no idea what a regular retinol would feel like.

But then I went to see my dermatologist. And because I suffer from cystic acne around my jaw line, we decided to try a prescription strength retinol. To ease into it, we started with the lowest available concentration.

Usually my skin is combination/oily and not sensitive at all. It takes everything without complaining. But one week in with the treatment and it was an irritated, dehydrated mess.

And in the light of this new experience, I feel quite different about the M. Asam Pure Vitamins Retinol Youth Concentrate *.

What M. Asam claims:

Texture and smell

The serum is white, light in texture and smells faintly of oranges. It absorbs quickly and without leaving a residue on the skin.

Application and effects

One pump is enough to cover my face and neck. I experienced no discomfort or tingling sensation, but could see my hyper pigmentation get lighter with time. The effects are less visible compared to a prescription strength retinol, but they are undeniably there.

Favorable ingredients:

  • Glycerin: Moisturizing
  • Grape Seed Oil: Rich in antioxidants and linoleic acid
  • Avocado Oil: Rich in antioxidants and fatty acids
  • Cocoa Seed Butter: Rich in fatty acids
  • Soybean Oil: Rich in linoleic acid
  • Grape Seed Extract: Rich in antioxidants, hydrating
  • Niacinamide: Vitamin B 3, antioxidant, combats hyper pigmentation
  • Retinyl Palmitate: Stimulates collagen production
  • Retinol: Stimulates collagen production
  • Tocopherol: Antioxidant
  • Ubiquinone: CoEnzyme Q10, antioxidant

Why combine two different types of retinol, you ask?

Well, the thing actually working the magic in our skin is Retinoic Acid. It is very powerful. Over the counter skincare always contains a precursor that needs to be processed in order to become active. Retinyl Palmitate needs two steps until ready, Retinol just one, so Retinyl Palmitate works a little slower and a little less. Combining the two in one preparation ensures that the effect is time-displaced to get more effect with less side effects.

Unfavorable Ingredients:

  • Parfum (lower third of ingredient list)
  • Alcohol (lower third of ingredient list)

Does it live up to its claims?

Yes.

Retinol is the one ingredient scientifically proven to combat the signs of aging and actually improve collagen production. Like most over the counter ones, this one will never be as effective as a prescription strength retinol will be, but the effect is there and it is noticeable. And this one is really gentle, despite containing a combined amount of retinoic acid precursors of 0,3%.

Would I repurchase?

Yes.

Right now I will continue my treatment with the prescription for as long as needed, but that product made its way under the Christmas tree as a present to my mother.

Who do I recommend it to?

Anyone that wants to introduce retinol into their skincare. Which should basically be anyone above a certain age.

It is a gentle yet effective product that is budget friendly and comes  with a pump. What´s not to love?

The fragrance, you might say. The alcohol!

I´ll give you that, they are there, no denying it. But for me the benefits massively outweigh these little annoyances.
