Ole Henriksen Truth Serum Collagen Booster – Could you face the truth?

Have you ever done a face scan showing you how much the sun has actually damaged your skin?

I haven´t, but I have read about it quite a lot. And even though I would most likely be petrified with horror when I see the results, I have never been one to hide from the truth. At least that is what I tell myself.

Ole Henriksen Truth Serum Collagen Booster
Ole Henriksen Truth Serum Collagen Booster

To be honest (should I say truthful, to stick with a theme here?) I know that the damage would be great, for I know I haven’t listened to my mother teaching me about the importance of sunscreen back in the days. Instead I tried anything to tan my NC 15 skin as quickly and deeply as possible. I believed in the whole „Red first, tanned later“ approach!

So before I actually get the chance to do one, I will try my very best to repair as much of the damage already done. And to help me with that, I tried Ole Henriksen Truth Serum Collagen Booster from the Vitamin C complex range.

What Ole Henriksen claims:

Like a daily vitamin for your face, this high powered vitamin C complex helps smooth out lines and wrinkles and prevents further damage. Loaded with antioxidants to fight off environmental aggressors and moisture-binding ingredients to keep your skin nourished and protected, this aromatic serum is absorbed instantly and penetrates to the deeper layers of the skin to provide long term results. Sensitive skin prone to irritation will benefit immensely from the calming properties of this oil-free serum.

Facts:

There are three different sizes available from the homepage here, ranging from 48$ (30 ml) to 128$ (100 ml). I got mine as a part of the „The Works“ set when traveling to Norway this summer, and the 15 ml included have lasted me a little longer than three months of (almost) daily use.

The see-through plastic container comes with a little pump that dispenses just enough of the slightly orange product to cover my entire face and neck.

Ole Henriksen Truth Serum Collagen Booster
Ole Henriksen Truth Serum Collagen Booster

Just like I´d expect from a product from the „Vitamin C complex“ range this one smells of citrus fruits, but only faintly. It is lightweight (and runny, as you can see in the picture above) and absorbs very well without leaving residue on my skin.

I love to use it in the mornings, as it works great under makeup, leaving my skin smooth and supple without feeling like I layered on too much already.

Favorable ingredients:

  • Sodium Ascorbyl Phospate: Vitamin C precursor, less irritating, more stable
  • Calcium Ascorbate: Vitamin C, brightening, antioxidant, improves collagen production
  • Glycerin: Moisturizing
  • Tocopheryl Actetate: Vitamin E, antioxidant
  • Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice: Soothing, anti-inflammatory
  • Orange Fruit Extract: Vitamin C, boosts Collagen, brightening
  • Camelia Sinensis Leaf Extract: „Green tea extract“, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory
  • Euphrasia Officinalis Extract: Adstringent, anti-inflammatory
  • Rosa Canina Fruit Extract: Rich in Vitamin C, reduces pigmentation, promotes collagen production
  • Grapefruit Seed Extract: Rich in Vitamin A, C and E

Unfavorable Ingredients:

  • Fragrance
  • PEG-12 Dimethicone

Does it live up to its claims?

Yes.

Now I can´t exactly tell how „deep“ it penetrates, but it is quickly absorbing, my skin appears smoother and I feel after three months of use that my complexion looks more even and brighter. It contains more than enough antioxidants and vitamins to back up the other claims I have no way of actually measuring.

Will I rebuy?

Yes.

I can see me using this a lot during the warmer months.

Who do I recommend it to?

Anyone, with the exception of people with really sensitive skin. It claims to be suited for them as well, but Vitamin C and fragrance make patch-testing before buying seem sensible.

If you are past your twenties and haven’t been always as consistent with your sun screen as you should have been, this one would be a great serum to start with!

Have you ever wondered about the sun damage done to your face?

Or have you actually done such a face scan?

  • This serum sounds incredible 🙂 It’s great that you saw such a huge difference after such a small amount of time. I’ve not been the most careful when it comes to face SPF too- i’ve started applying it daily for the last 2 years though

    • I expect to see results after three months, to be honest, I expect to see changes after 6-8 weeks. This is two times a cell turnover, if nothings has happened until then, I guess nothing will.

  • I used to skip using sun cream most of the time. I always thought about getting tanned asap and never actually thought about the damage the sun would cause. So I wish I hadn’t done that but yeah now I try to use sun cream and products with spf, considering how hot it gets in Turkey, this is at least something I should do. I haven’t done face scan and actually I am afraid to do it, I can kinda guess the result. This is another brand I can’t find it here, since it lives up the claims I will make sure to check it out!

    http://www.elabellaworld.com

    • Yes, the sins of our past. Even when I started thinking about SPF, I figured the low one I applied with my moisturize would be enough, but I know now it isn’t. Sure, it is better than nothing, but you have to reapply several times a day, and this is something I struggle with still.
      Do you reapply your sunscreen?

      • Most of the time I only apply before leaving home, so I hardly reapply unless I am in holiday by the sea. How often do you reapply?

        • During the winter times? Never. In the summer/when I know I will be outdoors for a longer period of time (>2 hours): as often as I remember, which is between never and four times. I got better when I discovered a spray-on sunscreen that could be used over makeup.

          • I haven’t heard spray on sunscreen before, it sounds like it is something I’ll need in summer since it is impossible to apply sunscreen over makeup.

          • I bought a Bioderma Hydrating SPF 30 mist last summer and really liked it. I will put up a review when summer draws near once again.

  • Even though I’ve never completely exposed my naked face to the sun, I did make the mistake to think that my makeup would protect me from it, which I deeply regret, now if you ask my relatives, they would say I’m a complete SPF freak! This serum sounds great, I really enjoy the way you do your skincare reviews, it’s always very easy to see if the product is adapted to my skintype or not!

    • Thank you, I am glad you find this helpful.
I made the mistake of thinking that my moisturizer/make-up had enough protection, too. You live and learn, I guess.

  • I’d be really interested to do one of those face scans, scary as the results may be! I’ve heard awesome things about this serum, another to add to the Wishlist…… The Wishlist is currently overflowing with things I’d like to try!

    • Tell me about it, the wish list manages to be even fuller than the bathroom cabinet, and that one is filled up to the rim already!

    • I got my hands on a travel kit and have been loving a lot of the things I have tried so far.

  • Yay! Great to hear it’s actually living up the the expectations.

  • This looks quite amazing. I may not need it quite yet, but a few years from now.. sounds like a good option 🙂 Thank you for sharing! And of course, great review as always 😉 xx

    • I believe in prevention and starting early, but maybe at your age being good with the SPF is still enough.

      • Yes. Being 22, I try to keep my routine simple, moistruize and take makeup off in the evening. Every once in a while do a deep cleaning and that’s it. I think that using too many chemicals and products only adds up to aging..

        • As I said, I started early, and I feel like I benefit a lot of it (I am almost 37), but there will never be a way to prove which approach is the better. In the end, it always comes down to your personal preference.

  • This serum definitely sounds like something I would like!
I’ve always used sunscreen, even at a very young age, but not very high spfs and only at the beach. Last summer was the first time I used an spf 30… I’ve never burned once in my life, but I’ll probably have some of the deeper damage one doesn’t really see.
    http://carolinapage.eu

    • The deeper damage you don’t see until 15 years later is what I am worried about now.
Back in the days when I was a kid, SPF 8 was really a thing… these days I wear 30-50, depending on where I am going.

    • My mother swears by that Clarins one, but I have never tried it myself. What are your thoughts on it?

      • I really love the Clarins double serum!

I use it at night and it’s pretty impressive. It’s actually in my review as you’ve seen amongst the 66 products I reviewed – no particular reason for that number by the way 😉

A great product and works really well combined with a Clarins day or night cream.

        Laura http://www.shehearts.net xx

        • Yes, I read it after I posed my question here. I might sneakily try it next time I am at my parents.

          • You should for sure! If you pop to a Clarins counter they may have some samples for you or place it on you there and there 🙂

  • This product looks quite promising. But somehow I really get scared to use skin care products which contains a lot of chemicals. Great review 🙂

    • Wow, you really started early with prevention then. Great for you!

  • jodie.keith

I’d love to do one of those face scans! I never understood the importance of SPF, it is definitely something that needs to be encouraged more when you are younger – maybe it should be in the school curriculum somehow to make sure kids know!

    Jodie @ Jodetopia x

    • Yes, I wasn´t aware of it for a very long time. But I don’t know if it would have helped to hear it in school, I guess I was just pretty ignorant back then…

  • I had a sample of this that I was excited to try out, but the fragrance really bothered me. Which was strange, because most of the time fragrances in skincare doesn’t bother me. I stopped using it, but I did like the consistency.

  • Sun protection is such an important part of the routine now as large damages in the future could occur. Glad you found a product that works for you! Thanks for sharing love.

I’ve never done a skin scan either to check out sun damage. I’m much more sun safe now and always wear a hat, but never used to when I was younger, so who knows what damage I’ve done! A lot I fear, just sunscreen isn’t always enough in our sun here.

I get so terrified with sun cancer scares in the media that I really do try to be careful – you just never know though do you?

    Musings & More

    • No, you don’t. Especially as the damage showing now is the one done 15-20 years ago. Back when I was little, SPF wasn´t really considered that important, so we spent much time out in the sun unprotected. And the rays you get before adolescence are the ones that cause cancer most likely…

    http://www.youtube.com/c/MissLovelyAttitude
    http://lovelyattitude.com

    • Da hast Du recht, vorbeugen ist immer gut. Das Problem ist ja, dass man die Schäden, die man bekommt, erst Jahre später sieht.

  • I’ve never heard about face scans showing the sun damage. This serum sounds pretty good, it looks more like oil from the photo. I’d gladly try it too when I have a chance 🙂

    „Grooming products for him“ // http://www.keenonbeauty.com

    • There is an oil in this range, but the serum is very lightweight, almost watery. It sinks in very quickly.
The scans show the hyper pigmentation by showing you the melanin distribution, so you can see the „age spots“ that are waiting to evolve. Obviously it does not show the destruction of collagen or DNA damage, but I guess we can guess that when we see the rest…

  • Hmm, yes. I’ve become very wary of the sun ever since I realized I have rosacea on my face and sat in the sun for 30 minutes.. and my rosacea had become so much worse :O Now I try to avoid it as much as possible. I’m happy to read this works. If I ever find the brand I would like to test it (before buying, doh).

    • With rosacea I would suggest trying it first, just like you said. Vitamin C can be irritating.
Did the rosacea show up so late in life? I might remember incorrectly, but didn’t you say last year that the sun did do you well in one of your holiday posts? Or was that just for the body?

      • yup, I’ve had it for the last five years. No, it wasn’t the sun.. but the sea! The salt in the water, I think! I avoided the sun as much as possible, but when I was swimming in the sea I could not wear my hat 😛 I might have pointed out that it did not worsen my face at that point.. probably because of the sea salt! You’ve got a good memory though 🙂

        • Haha, the husband hates me for my memory.
So you should probably move to the sea then, to get the benefits all year round.

  • I love using Vitamin C on my skin at night. It’s one of the best antioxidants! I haven’t tried this one yet, but it sounds nice. Thanks for sharing!

I’ve read lots of great reviews on this serum and it’s already on my list to purchase but first I need to finish the serums and facial oils that I have. It’s like a never ending battle to clear my arsenal of skincare. #beautybloggerproblems

    • I can relate to the struggle. Right now I tell myself that I will save the money I spend now when I back at home next year, with no income for myself, so it is sensible to shop now… Is this still considered a „white lie“?

  • Denise Sabs

Well, I have sensitive skin, really very much, but it says that it is good for people like me as well, though in the end the article mentions that vitamin C can make some harm… but I never wore this brand, though it’s very famous, and would love to start with this product! Dora http://www.BangsBang.com

    • Even though we are so concerned about the spots and the wrinkles, skin cancer is what I am most afraid of. It is definitely increasing these days, and sadly no serum will help with that!

  • Danielle

You made me laugh again with your „Red first, tanned later“ approach. When you said that your skin is smooth, do you mean soft or has this serum helped smooth out your fine lines? Thanks, Anne!

    Danielle
    http://www.spring2spring.com

    • Not so much the fine lines, but the unevenness in texture caused by pores etc. It will help with fine lines as well, but more on the long run. For instant results on fine lines, a hydrating serum with hyaluronic acid would be my first choice.

  • I definitely had lots of sun damage on my skin but thankfully I got wiser when I got older and protect my skin much better now. I’ve just finished this serum after a few months of using it and it definitely helped a lot with my hyperpigmentation and my skin is so much brighter and more even. Will definitely repurchase it. x

    • I remember reading about it on your blog, when I was about half way through my bottle. I got wiser with age too, but the sons of my youth show quite clearly now.

  • I agree with you! I like this serum a lot. I prefer it combined with the oil as it brings the maximum benefits. To me it smells like orange creamsicles. it’s a bit fake smelling but it performs well for the price so I let it slide as it doesn’t stick around. Plus is you use the oil, then that’s all you can smell which is rosehip/red tea/fresh orange scent. I think I prefer it at night though as the few times I used in my AM routine, it balled up under makeup.

    • I am testing the oil too, and I have to say I much prefer the smell of the serum to that of the oil, but the product itself is lovely.

  • This sounds pretty awesome. I love using products with Vitamin C to help heal my post-acne hyperpigmentation.
