Seasonal Makeup Challenge – Summer 2016

In case you missed the Spring Edition, here is the link to the post explaining what the Seasonal Makeup Challenge is all about.

Seasonal Makeup Challenge Summer 2016

For the rest of us, the rules as a quick reminder:

The rules

„At the beginning of a season (Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall) I will choose some pieces of makeup from my stash and post them here. By the end of that season I shall post how well (or not) I’ve done using them up, and propose new pieces for the following season.“ (The Polished Polyglot)

So without further ado, here is the recap of the Spring challenge and my picks for summer.

And because it would have been a two page post if I had written down my thoughts, here is a video of me talking you through what worked and what didn’t from the items I picked for spring.

Summer Challenge 2016 – my picks

Bronze eyes and coral lips – to be honest that is what I reach for most of the time. So I tried to find the shades in my collection that I usually neglect. Which are quite a few, because the amount of corals, reds and bronze I own is ridiculous.

Eyeshadows

  • L´Oréal Color Infallible in 021 „Sahara treasure“: Great for a wash of gold when in a hurry
  • MAC eyeshadow quad containing „Manila Paper“ (Veluxe Pearl), „Flip“ (Frost), „Aztec Brick“(Veluxe Pearl) and „Creole Beauty“ (Frost): I use this quad very often, but want to put the focus on Aztec Brick and Creole Beauty this time
  • MAC Paint Pot in „Rubenesque“: I used to love it, but haven’t reached for it in ages. It is already starting to dry out!

Blushes

  • MAC blush in „Ripe Peach“: So pretty to look at, but doesn’t get enough love
  • MAC blush in „Fleet Fast“: It is a red, but a coral red. Reminds me of NARS Orgasm, but less shimmery and more pigmented
  • MAC Mineralize Blush in „Warmth of Coral“: Coral for summer, that needs no further explanation

Lipsticks

  • MAC „Bronzilla“ (Frost): I used to love it, but rarely wear it anymore. It is getting way too old, so it needs to be loved or to go.
  • Astor All in One lipstick in „Fashion Chic“ (*PR Sample*): A bronze red and a recent acquisition
  • Lipstick Queen in „Saint Coral“: Beautiful, but ever since my daughter almost destroyed it , I rarely reach for it. I need a lip brush for application now.
  • Clinique Chubby Stick (sheer) in 12 „Oversized Orange“:A Christmas gift, unused so far. And orange, obviously.
  • Clinique Chubby Stick Intense in „Heftiest Hibiscus“: A Christmas present, still unused. An orange based red.

Lipgloss

  • MAC Cremesheen Glass in „Star Quality“: A vibrant pink, and less than half of it left.
  • L´Oréal Glam Matte in 511 „Skinny Tangerine“: Orange red and supposedly matte. I honestly can´t remember the last time I wore it.
  • Revlon Colorburst in „Sizzle“: More orange than red, but very pretty in the tube.

Do you switch your makeup according to the season?

And what do you think of my picks?

Loving you summer picks! In all honesty, I don’t really change up my makeup depending on the season. Like yourself, I do love wearing bronzes and reds all year round! I kind of just have a set of colours that work for me, and I tend to stick to that. The only thing I may ever considering changing up is a lipstick colour – more bright, pink lippies in the summer, and then darker berry reds in autumn/winter. But it’s not really ever set in stone. 🙂 Good luck with your makeup challenge! I think it’s an interesting idea for series, curious to see how you get on! x Kisses. x

    • Lipstick is the thing I change the easiest as well, which is why I tried to change some eyeshadow colors for the spring installment, and I have to say it worked out quite well. Sometimes it pays off to step outside your comfort zone. On the other hand, if something suits you, why try desperately to change it?

    • Ich habe deutlich mehr alte Favoriten wiederentdeckt, als ich dachte, allein dafür hat es sich gelohnt.

  • Adding colour to your makeup routine must have been good, as I told you before colourful eye makeup suits you! New summer challenge sounds good top, I love bronze eye makeup and coral lips, something I wouldn’t mind trying out. When you have a kid, it shouldn’t be easy to keep your makeup safe, is it?

    • Once they start to crawl, nothing is safe anymore! I will see to that when we move, but I assume every mother has caught her daughter raiding the makeup stash more than once.

  • Fab summer picks, in particular the fruity, coral lip glosses! This seems like a great way of challenging yourself to use certain products you may have been neglecting haha 🙂

    • It is, especially if you know you will have to do a follow up post. The thought of getting out there and writing: „Well, I didn’t end up using anything of my picks, it was a fail“ is quite encouraging to actually grab them.

  • This sounds like fun! I only really switch up my base depending on the season but I could definitely get on board with this challenge. I recently decluttered my stash so there’s really no excuse why I couldn’t do this. I love your picks for summer! I’m with you on the bronzy shades!

    • So join in, the more the merrier. I rediscovered some old favorites this way, and some thing I surely will not get any use out of, no matter how hard I try. That will help me to avoid further unnecessary purchases, I hope.

  • Oh wow! You look stunning on your video! I love your hair and it looks it has grow out a lot.
Your summer picks are amazing! I’d love to see what looks you create with those.
I’m a little behind with the challenge this time, but I should have my picks sorted for next week. The weather is not helping me for the photo sessions though 🙁

    • It did grow some, the benefits of pregnancy, but now the hair loss has kicked in and I know it will look way worse in a few weeks. Plus I desperately need a trim, I haven’t been to the hairdressers since January.
The weather is horrible for picture taking, I have to rely on artificial light completely. I am so glad I bought them last year, the investment was well worth it.

  • Nice colours for summer and I love your floral top Anne. x

  • I’m just the same with highlighters: on daily basis, I just forget to wear them! Thank you for your honesty about the Clarins Instant Light Natural Lip Perfector! Considering that my lips are quite pigmented, I’m now sure I won’t try them and save quite a lot of money!

    • If you want to try something similar, try to get your hands on Catrice Lip Beautifier. They are a spot on dupe for a fraction of the price.

  • Such a fun thing, should definitely challenge myself this summer too! Xx

  • That Mac quad of yours looks so perfect for summer! I also love the blushers you have picked for summer 🙂
I do tend to use some products more in different seasons. Peach, coral and gold are for sure summer shades! 🙂

    • I feel like the MAC quad is perfect for summer, but I actually got it in a holiday collection. Maybe the Christmas colors aren’t so different from our summer picks?

  • Usually I only switch up my lip products. Can’t wait to watch this later!

    • Me too, which is why I try to get some more use out of my eyeshadows.

  • Your hair and makeup in the video is so pretty! I don’t wear that much makeup to begin with and probably even less when it’s warm. i do go for brighter colors in the summer months though.

    • Thank you. I have a tutorial coming up on this look that I filmed right before I filmed that video. It is all about multiple uses of my on-camera time these days.

  • This challenge looks like great fun, and so are your picks! Coral is great.

    http://themakeuptrain.com

  • This challenge is such a good way to get through products you already have. I’ve noticed that since I started making more effort to use up my makeup earlier this year I’m not buying quite as much, which is nice for my bank balance. I really like all the reds and corals you’ve picked this time around!

    alicered.co.uk

    • Yes, the same is true for me. Using up my products makes me aware of how much I actually own already, and that helps me not to pick up the 103th red lipstick, even if it is only from the drugstore.

  • I didn’t know about this challenge, but it such a smart idea. Your picks for summer are lovely, I’ll probably be reaching for bronze eyeshadows as well – your MAC quad is gorgeous – and peachy blushers, of which I have none yet. Ripe Peach is super pretty, you could totally get to use it more this summer 🙂

  • I’ve never heard of this challenge and I might just add it to the list of „to-do“ posts! I think this would be so much fun and it looks like you and I have very similar tastes. (:
    http://www.accordingtokiki.net

    • Yes please, join in. I love seeing what other people pick, the more the merrier!

  • You did a great job with your Spring makeup picks but I remembered that you were never enthralled with the Clarins lips perfector. Mac Shell Pearl is beautiful and the packaging is gorgeous, I would keep it too! I had no idea that you don’t usually use highlighter, do you use bronzer instead?

    Shireen | Reflection of Sanity

    • If I tell you I usually use nothing, would you believe me? Most of my blushes are satin finish, some even have a „glow“ and that paired with my skins natural oils and my tendency to heavily powder the center of my face usually does the trick.
And yes, I never liked the Clarins lip perfectos, which is why I tried to get myself to use them more often. But whenever I apply them I see a waste of money.

      • Ahhh, that would explains it. I need the glow or my skin tends to look dry and flat so highlighter is a must. Recently I’ve started to use bronzers too, they seem to give a dimension to my face. I never needed all these products back when I was in Malaysia where it’s sunny 80% of the year but I sometimes find my face looking sallow with the lack of sun here in Canada.

        • I use bronzer sometimes when I wear a lot of color, to look more tan and less washed out. Or self-tanner in the summertime.

  • I’ve been loving chubby stick products recently! I haven’t tried those Clarins ones before, but I love the Rimmel colour rush ones!

    http://www.halesaaw.com/

    • There are many amazing chubby stick products out there these days. I just happened to try the Clinique ones first and have been faithful ever since then.

  • What a good idea. I’m finding myself in a bit of a rut with makeup (mainly eyeshadow/lips) an d that’s when I can actually be bothered to put it on in the first place! I think it also doesn’t help that we are doing some painting/decoration and stuff is everywhere and I don’t have easy access to my products right now.
Bronze eyes are perfect for summer! I really like the shades you picked in the quad.
    thebeautybloss.com

    • I dread our move and the boxes everything will be hidden in as well. It makes using a variety of products so difficult, and if there is painting involved I´d probably not be wearing any makeup whatsoever. Are you doing the nursery?

      • Yes, lots of painting. Started out as one room now it’s at least three, but probably four rooms. It was the nursery, but now we’ve decided to move my eldest into that room and paint his room which will now become the bubs. Bubs still sleeps with me and will likely do so throughout the winter as its too cold to get up to bf. That’s my excuse anyway! I love having him sleep next to me. Moving an entire house makes me sweat just thinking about it!

        • We don’t have a house, just a flat at the moment. But it still is a lot of stuff.

  • I really need to get one of those Clinique chubby sticks! I tried one once when I was looking to replace my makeup but wasn’t a fan of the price. Keep seeing them pop up on blogs though so thinking I should splurge! 🙂

You picked some really nice colours – perfect for summer 🙂

    Away From The Blue Blog

    • I think they are worth it, but there are great drugstore options as well these days. Rimmel, Essence and Astor, to name a few.

  • What a great idea for a challenge. I was thinking about getting Clarins lip perfector a while back as a treat. After herring your thoughts about it, I’m glad I didn’t buy it.

    http://www.mydailywear.co.uk

    • It depends on your preference. I feel that if I spend a lot of money, I want opaque color. If you like sheer products, you might enjoy them. Oh, and if you have access to Catrice, the Lip Beautifiers are a spot on dupe for a fraction of the price.

  • Aaah it feels so good to be back on your blog Anne, hope your well! I love the lipstick picks, and can we just acknowledge how amazing the chubby sticks are ♥
    tipscapsule.blogspot.com

  • I honestly don’t, I am so boring especially when it comes to my base I stick to what I know I love which is a medium coverage semi-matte finish with a thin consistency so it feels lightweight on the skin. I am going to make a conscious effort to be more adventurous in the makeup department. God knows, I own enough! So many lovely photos xxx

  • <3 for learning to love colours on your eyes 🙂 I love rediscovering old products, but it rarely happens for me since I don't have too large of a collection 😀 I hope you'll be able to use as much of these products as possible and I can't wait to see some summer looks you do 🙂 xx

    • Your collection will grow, don’t you worry. And I will make an effort to come up with a colorful summer version just for you.

  • Such pretty pics! Use that MAC gloss more, dude!

  • Loved the video and your pics for summer makeup challenge. I switch up my makeup. It gets lighter all around and lots more golds.

    • I love golds all year round, but they look great on (fake) tanned skin.

  • lovely video ! you re getting better at it:)

Loving all those lippy shades..very summery ,

    • I hope I am, I have been filming for almost six months now. It would be horrible if I stayed as bad as I was in the beginning.

  • Nice picks, I hope you can finish at least one of these products!
I do change the shades I wear based on the season, and corals are definitely my favorites in the summer!
    Beaumiroir

    • Finishing one is the main goal. I didn’t manage that last season, even though the gloss was already half empty.

  • Gorgeous picks and I don’t think I own any of the products you’ve mentioned! I love gold/bronze/copper tones for summer too xx

  • Hahaha loved your bloopers! And the fly bit was rather funny too! I have quite a few glosses myself and rarely wear them anymore. For similar reasons. Maybe I’ll make it a point to work a few into some looks? Loved your picks!
