Sephora MicroSmooth Baked Face Compact – One for summer

While everyone knows and loves Sephora as a place to shop, I feel like their own makeup line doesn’t get all the love it deserves. Of course, not all of the products they do are outstanding, but there are a few that are well worth checking out.

Sephora MicroSmooth Baked Face Compact in "Light"
Sephora MicroSmooth Baked Face Compact in „Nude“

My biggest problem with Sephora though is the access. You know, I like to feel makeup before I buy it. Smell it, touch it, admire the packaging… The whole sensual experience. Problem is: there is no Sephora in Germany.

So I shop when I am in France. And this is where I bought the Sephora MicroSmooth Baked Face Compact in the color „15 Nude“.

Now I was in France September 2015. Right at the end of summer.  Right at the end of winter though I am facing another problem.

Can you guess which?

You guessed right. My perfect color match then is too dark for me now. But as I love everything else about it, I am (im)patiently waiting for warmer days and a little bit of color added back into my lifeless complexion.

What Sephora claims:

Flaunt a natural, picture-perfect look with these state-of-the-art face powders. Infused with radiance-boosting minerals, sea coral, and green tea extract, these baked pigments sweep on weightless, natural-looking color—so you’ll be the picture of health. The micronized, advance pigments blend seamlessly into the skin to enhance skintone and provide a flawless, no-makeup finish. Formulated with mineral water and shaped by hand, this foundation is slowly baked to achieve a unique airy texture that perfectly melts into the skin. Coverage can go from sheer to high, depending on the amount used. The fine powder forms the perfect match to your complexion with a lightweight, breathable feel—forget cakey.

Facts:

Price and packaging:

The product is housed in a black plastic compact with a see-through lid that feels quite sturdy. It contains 7g of product and is available for 27,50 $ (or 16,50 €) here.

The website lists eight colors, going from porcelain to ebony.

Close up. Do you notice the subtle sheen? Granted, it is very subtle.
Close up. Do you notice the subtle sheen? Granted, it is very subtle.

Texture and finish

Very soft and silky to the touch, the powder doesn’t have a noticeable amount of shimmer, but once applied gives a very natural, satin finish to the skin.

Depending on your method of application, you´ll get light coverage with a fluffy brush or medium coverage when applied with a powder puff. Spots and acne scars as well as hyper pigmentation will need extra concealing, but any redness is evened out nicely.

Longevity

On my skin, the powder has a tendency to oxidize with time. Not very much, but with it being too dark for me already when applied it gets more noticeable with time.

I get around four hours of wear before I feel the need to reapply, but no matter how many touchups I do throughout the day, it never gets cakey.

Does it live up to its claims?

Most of them.

It is lightweight, natural in finish, not cake, breathable, all of that. The one thing I disagree with is the high coverage achievable. Of course it says: „depending on the amount of product used.“, but there sure is a limitation to how much product you can actually put on your face, no?

Will I rebuy?

Probably.

I love almost everything about it. But I have to see if the color will work out come summer, as the „Porcelain“ shade was too pinkish on my skin.

Who do I recommend it to?

Anyone.

The finish is natural, the texture is lovely and you get a lot of product.

It will need extra concealing, but looks great on top of foundation as well as worn on it´s own, and will feel lightweight throughout the summer heat.

Are you into powder foundations come summer?

And have you tried Sephoras own brand yet? If so, any recommendations?

  • I use to love Sephora’s makeup when I was a teenager, now I have to admit that, if I very often go to Sephora, I never buy their makeup, except for their nail polishes and Pro brushes which I find very good! So, this is definitely a brand that I need to explore more!

    • I have tried two makeup items from the Sephora brad so far, so I need to look into it more as well. Which brushes would you recommend?

      • Even though I haven’t tried the whole range, the Pro range brushes always feel incredible, I highly recommend those. But my favorite and the one I use every day for applying my foundation is the N°56!

        • Okay, I´ll add it to my list the next time I shop in France.

  • I’m not really into powder foundations. They always make my pores look so awful…

    • I have the same problems with a few of them, but not with this one. I always feel like they are „lighter“ than liquid ones, and I am wearing less product. Which is totally untrue.

  • I love Sephora, such a great store and I cannot wait for one to open in London!

I usually use liquid foundations as I do find powders can dry my skin a little, however that may be because I haven’t found the right one yet 🙂

This pick sounds quite nice as I really like a soft and silky finish on my skin 🙂

  • Shame that it doesn’t work for you over winter so you can’t use it real round, as otherwise it sounds like a lovely product! I have a hard time finding the right shades for my skin too sometimes, I’m very pale as I stay as safe as I can in the sun and don’t like to tan!

    Away From The Blue Blog

    • I don’t really tan as well, but my skin gets a little darker in the summer. Maybe half a shade, and sometimes that is all that is needed.

  • I’m surprised you don’t have Sephora in Germany. In Greece we have.
However, I don’t like the quality of their own brand products.

  • I really like the look of this! I’ve only visited a Sephora store once, but I was so overwhelmed with the amount of products and brands in there I only bought a couple of things and didn’t even remember to check out all of the counters 😀

  • I actually tend to use liquid/cream products (mainly bb creams and cream blushes) more in the summer, as I feel like they stay put longer and make less of a mess when it’s super hot and I’m sweating all over the place!
When I’m at Sephora I hardly ever check their own brand counter… I have a couple of their liquid lipsticks, a couple of their jumbo liners and one of their Expert Manicure nail polishes (which I love), that’s about it.

I always the matter-of-fact way in which you share your story and thoughts. I happen to be in agreement, Sephora does do a lot of products but none of them are outstanding and the other products offered by third parties are always superior.. • Their lip stains are among the best I have ever tried, no matter the brand, so I guess they do have some outstanding stuff, it just gets overlooked. But when looking at the prices I feel like they are offering a drugstore among the high end brands by carrying their own stuff. Maybe that is the marketing concept?

  • Toyas Tales

I agree that Sephora’s line is underrated. I love their kohl eyeliner. I have never used in baked powder because the ones I generally see in the stores usually have some kind of shimmer which I can not wear with my oily skin.

    • We used to have it, but they pulled out of the German market a few years ago.

  • It’s good that you were able to hit up Sephora in France since there isn’t one in Germany. I feel the same way about being able to touch and experience a beauty product before I buy it but sometimes it’s just not possible. My skin is so dry I can’t even do powder foundations in the summer but I tend to prefer a dewy look anyway.

    • I spend at least one holiday in France every year, as my parents have a vacation home there, and visiting Sephora is always on my list.

  • The lighter shade might be ok for me. I need something that has a balance of cool and warm tones for face products. I’d always do my Sephora shopping in Strasbourg! Well, I should say did!

    • I prefer my face products neutral as well, neither the warm nor the cool shades match me completely.
I go to Perpignan, whenever I am on holiday there.

  • Sounds like a great powder and hopefully they build a Sephora in Germany someday and soon! -Maireem

  • Kay (shoesandglitter)

We don’t get Sephora in the UK, either… 🙁 I would love to try some of their makeup range – you are right, I think they are very underrated – some of their products look really fab! http://shoesandglitter.com

    • I feel it depends how I apply the powder: If I use a fluffy brush there is barely any coverage, with a dense one (kabuki i.e.) it is more and with a sponge you get the full on look. But to be honest, i just don’t like using the sponges/powder puffs.

  • Denise Sabs

A super hello, again! Sorry for the absence, I was off for a while, „on the road“, but now I’m back! I hope you are fine! Well, I would love to try this product!

  • For the longest time I had no idea that Sephora had their own line, haha! It’s true, their own products really do not get a lot of attention, even when some of them really deserve it. I’d say this one most likely deserves a bit more credit, based on your review.

When I do reach for foundation in the summer, I do prefer a powder. Liquid feels so heavy, and add that to the heaviness of the summer air? Unpleasant 😉

    Erin
    http://sexycardi.blogspot.ca

    • Exactly. i like powder all year round, but in summer most liquids feel way too heavy on my skin.

  • I have one really close to me, and whenever I go there I hardly check Sephora’s makeup products. I’ve only used nail polish which was quite good. In summer I tend to use lightweight products, and hardly powder. If I have to use powder, then I prefer translucent ones instead of coloured ones.
I always have the same problem, products I get in summer are too dark for me in winter. It gets annoying!

    • I got the Shade Adjusting Drops in „Lightening“ from The Body Shop a short time ago and they really help with adapting my foundation to my skin tone these days.

  • Ich liebe liebe liebe Sephora. Leider haben wir in Österreich immer noch keinen, aber man kann zum Glück online bestellen! Bei jedem Städtetrip recherchiere ich immer ob und wo es ein Sephora gibt! 🙂 xxx

    http://www.naomella.com

    • Ja, das mache ich ganz genau so. Und klar kann man bestellen, aber die Sachen anfassen ist doch was ganz anderes.

  • I wish Sephora was easily accessible in the UK also, as I would love to try the brands own products. The sounds lovely and it’s good to hear that it evens out skin tone on it’s own. Not so sure if I would be keen to re-apply through out the day though so maybe I would wear it with a high coverage concealer x

    Beauty with charm

    • I tend to touch up on powder anyway, as my skin gets a little oily around the t-zone, so that isn’t a big drawback for me.

  • Nice! great review

  • For some reason, the first thing that popped into my mind as soon as I saw the pics was „mac skinfinish natural“.

And yeah, there are some really nice goodies in sephora, and they do not receive much love. I too have only access when I travel, which is a pity :X

    • I don’t have a MSF on me for direct comparison, but from what I remember they add more glow. And are more pricey…

  • Michèle

    • I usually go in France, but I have been to some in Italy as well.

  • It sounds like a nice product. Hopefully it works better for you come Summer. Really digging that close up!

I have a few Sephora brand products. Eyeshadows mostly. I like them a lot, but their products don’t always call to me. Every once in a while something will catch my eye though.

    • I have heard great things about their brushes and nail polishes, but the item I first fell in Love with were the lip stains. Have you tried them, being the liquid lipstick lover you are?

  • I’ve never really been into powder foundations, I have used a couple but usually more as a setting/extra coverage powder over a tinted moisturiser or BB during summer.
I have heard some great things about Sephora line, mostly about the lip products. I have a contour powder from them, but haven’t really used much as I’m not a huge contourer. I’d like to try more.
    thebeautybloss.com

    • The lip stains are what I fell in love with in the first place, and I have been meaning to try a brush or two as well.
Using a powder foundation on top of my liquid one is what I do in winter, just using a very fluffy brush, but in summer only something like that applied with a Kabuki is lovely. At least for me, I don’t like liquid foundation come summer.

  • I’m using an extra concealer anyway so this one is definitely a perfect powder for me. 😉

You are so right about their products not getting the love. They’re busy selling other brands while theirs takes a back seat. • thefashionsalt

    • Your face burns? I would totally skip them too in that case. Does it get red as well?

      • thefashionsalt

I’ve been trying different makeup when I take photos. Most of the foundations and powders I tried burned just a little and then got itchy. That’s when I wash it off and then it’s fine. There was one that made my face really red and lasted all night.

        • Have you tried mineral foundations? I don’t have much experience with them, but I have heard they´d be great for sensitive skin.

          • thefashionsalt

I haven’t tried them, though I remember my mom using one. I’ll have to try it.

  • I have only actually tried a few of Sephora’s own branded beauty products and they were hit and miss. This sounds interesting and good. I agree, Sephora’s access bit is a problem. It was tough when I lived in the UK, plus the shipping is horrid to ship there. My solution is visiting their stores when I travel on business or buying if I am in the States. 🙂

  • I’m coping with the same problem! There’s not a Sephora (anymore!) in Holland… I visit their website often, and my wish list is endless there, but I hardly ever buy anything. When we still had a Sephora I bought their own products whenever they were having a sale (they were offering 3 products for €15!). I didn’t like the smell of their products and neither pretty much the quality, but there was one creamy compact foundation (especially to use in the sun) that I absolutely loved! If I ever visit a Sephora again, I will def buy that one again!

    • Shopping online just isn’t the same without getting to actually see the products! I keep lusting over certain items and googling swatches, but I barely ever buy them, I have been disappointed way too often.
If you happen to find yourself in a Sephora again, I recommend you check out their lip stains as well if you like vibrant lips that really stay in place.

  • Why Sephora can’t be in every country?? I have a few of their products and I think they’re great quality so I’m not surprised you love the powder, it sounds great! I will check it out when I finally decide to make the online order from US Sephora or when I visit Poland 🙂 x

    • It is such a shame we have to travel to get our hands on that stuff!

  • I do love powder foundations but it’s so hard to find a decent pale one. I really like the look of this – maybe one day I’ll splash out and do a Sephora order (you have to spend £75 here in the UK for them to deliver though, so it won’t be anytime soon).

    alicered.co.uk

  • Great product! I would love to try something from Sephora but it isn’t available in my country :/

    mystylishcorner.blogspot.ba

  • I agree with you when you say that Sephora does not get the love it deserves beauty wise. I always end up finding something I absolutely love there, and I’m currently obsessed with their brushes and face masks because they have so much quality and really are worth the money. But I had no idea there wasn’t a Sephora in Germany. What? Not in the whole country? That’s silly. But even then, the one I have near by doesn’t have half of the things other Sephoras do. It’s mostly the basics.

I’ve never heard of or tried this one, but I’ll definitely check it out next time I’m in Sephora (if they do have it).

    Ella Pinto xx

    • Th Sephoras in Europe stock way less than the ones in the States. There used to be Sephora in Germany, but they pulled out of the market a few years ago and closed everything down.

  • I always love Sephora and I agree Sephora own products don’t always get nice reviews having. I got few lipsticks by Sephora that I adore and a press powder too that is lovely too but unfortunately it is a bit too orange for my skin colour ( i think when I bough it the lighting was very bright and I though it was a lighter shade ) oh well never mind ! I am going to France for few days in April with my boyfriend so I am so going to visit Sephira. What this space for a Sephora haul.

    • Yes, a visit there is on my travel agenda when I go to France as well, but I don’t think I´ll go until September. The lip stains are lovely too!

  • It sounds really nice! I do like powder foundations a lot, in fact they’re my go-to type of foundation. I only use cream/liquid when I want extra coverage (it’s been more frequent in the past year or so). And I’ve had a pretty good experience with Sephora brand so far, although I haven’t purchased anything from them in a long time. Their cream blushes are really nice.
    Beaumiroir

    • I haven’t tried them, but I do enjoy the lip stains they sell.
Powder foundation is my go-to foundation come summer, I don’t like wearing liquid foundation every day, I usually do when I film/ take blog pictures or when my skin needs a little extra throughout winter.

  • I haven’t tried powder foundations before as I assumed they wouldn’t work as well on dry skin. I wish there was a Sephora here too so I could go in and try everything! 🙂

    Velvet Blush

    • I guess a liquid foundation does work better on dry skin, but some powders might as well.

  • I haven’t tried this as i have poor judgement on compacts.
Since im not using so much on my face, i usually use loose powders.
I think i will check it on Sephora if it works on me.

    • I prefer compacts for traveling and touch ups throughout the day.

  • I am a summer-powder-foundation type of girl! I actually finished my MAC one and have not decided which brand I should repurchase from! I’ll definitely look into this one next time I’m in a Sephora!

  • Looks great and like the subtle sheen it has…

  • I have this and love it! I feel like it’s a little too dry for winter (I combat that by spritzing my face with Fix+ after using it) but the finish is really natural and lovely, like you said.

    • Even in winter my face rarely feels or looks dry, to be honest.

  • I love this shade but the darker undertones makes me feel as though it would make it look unnatural on my face? Maybe if it was a little more rosy/peachy…

  • There is no Sephora in the UK either, which is annoying. The product seems lovely though. At least you have something for the summer.
