Splashing my face with water – MAC Studio Waterweight SPF 30 Foundation

I think we all are old enough to know that advertisements and reality usually don’t match.

Sometimes even the claims sound a little odd to me. Case in point? The new MAC Studio Waterweight SPF 30 Foundation.

According to the sales assistant, your face after applying the foundation should look and feel like you just splashed it with water. Hydrated and glowing.

If I splashed my face with water, it would feel tight, my eyes would get a little red and my nose would start running. Not really that tempting, hm?

Does the foundation actually meet the advertisement claims? Let´s see.

What MAC claims:

Introducing an innovative foundation that delivers colour in an ultra-fluid, elastic gel- serum formula. With a virtually weightless feel, this formula is extraordinarily comfortable, lasting for hours. With stay-true colour and sheer medium buildable coverage, it softly blurs imperfections such as pores and fine lines, while also controlling oil. The addition of Moisture-Fusion Complex provides immediate and all-day hydration, leaving skin feeling quenched and silky to the touch. The unique dropper provides you with a drop of perfection.

Facts:

The frosted glass bottle contains 30 ml (1.0 fl oz) of product and will cost you 34,50€ in store or online (33 $ online here). There are many different shades available, so even very fair or very dark complexions should be able to find a match.

While the glass bottle looks very chic, it isn’t perfect for traveling. The „unique dropper“, basically a pipette, works really well in distributing the product and despite my initial concern doesn’t lead to a horrible mess, as the outer part somehow stays pretty clean.

The formula itself is very runny, and against my usually habit of using my fingers or a beauty blender for foundation, I preferred using a brush with that one.

The coverage is sheer, maybe buildable to medium when a brush is used. When applied with fingers or a beauty blender, a light coverage is the maximum I can achieve.

On to pictures

1. Bare face, only eye makeup done. No concealer.

Bare face, no concealer. Redness around the nose and chin, hyper pigmentation as well as blemishes on my cheeks and jawline.

2. Foundation applied (and build up), no additional concealer

Skintone looks more even, blemishes and hyper pigmentation need more coverage.

The finish itself is lovely, it looks very natural and dewy on my combination/oily skin. I preferred to powder my t-zone, but depending on the finish you are going for I don’t think you have to. It didn’t cling to any dry patches I had.

The formula feels hydrating and stays that way throughout the day,  while the wear time (no primer, no powder), just like expected with the sheerer coverage, is around 4-6 hours on me. It fades lovely though, without settling into fine lines and could probably be enhanced by using a primer or a setting powder.

Does it live up to its claims?

Most of them.

I do feel it on my skin, mostly due to the hydrating properties, so I wouldn’t agree on the „virtually weightless“ claim, but call it lightweight.

It lasts several hours, stays true to color and offers sheer coverage, buildable to light medium.

Despite being pretty sheer, it blurs imperfections and fine lines, it evens out the skintone and leaves my skin feeling silky to the touch.

However I don’t feel like it works great at oil control.

Will I rebuy?

Possibly.

If there isn’t another foundation that I really want to try first. #beautybloggerproblems

Who do I recommend it to?

People with normal to dry skin, looking for a dewy finish and light coverage. I think this will work lovely on more mature skins.

If your skin is very problematic and you have a lot to cover up, this isn’t the right foundation for you.

If your face is very oily, you should probably opt for another one.

All in all, I have been loving the foundation for everyday use during the colder weather when I just want to look nice and fresh. For a night out I would probably opt for another one with heavier coverage.

But I am happy to report my face doesn’t look like claimed by the sales assistant. It looks way better!

Have you tried that foundation yourself?

And how do you look like when you just splash water to your face?

  • This is a foundation I really want to try so I’m really happy you did a review about it ! I love the finish on you, and I believe since I have a normal skin, quite dry at the moment, it will perhaps last a little bit longer on me so now I am very tempted (another foundation on my wishlist )

  • Oooh, I love the way it looks on you! Definitely agree with the dewy and it just evens everything out. I’ve been wearing light coverage foundations for the past 2 years, waiting for my skin to get to good before going to heavier foundations but now that my skin has calmed down, I think I want to try more coverage again. But this Mac one definitely looks like a good one to get for that nice natural, dewy glow.

  • Great review. I haven’t found a product yet that would reach all expectations and things packaging say. Are they even exist? Anyways, this foundation look nice enough for a medium coverage. Not sure how it would look on my skin as it’s very oily 🙂

    • I guess with very oily skin this wouldn’t be the right one for you.

  • I’ve read pretty good reviews on this foundation and I think there’s a similar formula from Smashbox which is a sister brand with MAC. I have yet to try MAC foundations but if I ever do, it would be this and the Face&Body (I think?) foundation because of the light coverage.

    Shireen | Reflection of Sanity

    • I never tried the Face and Body foundation, but I read this one would be the „sister version“ with a tad more coverage, which is why I opted for that one first.

Silly marketing aside, it does sound appealing, but I definitely need something more matte.

        • At least these work. The eyeshadows and lipsticks are way better than the foundation range in my opinion anyway.

  • I haven’t seen this foundation before. It gives a nice coverage and dewy look (which I don’t really go for – I prefer matte finish since I have oily skin). I don’t know how all these people come up with ideas like „… splashed it with water“ really? Like yours, my skin would feel tight too.

  • I like the look of it on you. I like the coverage. The longevity is crap though! I’d probably use it for evening wear where I only needed moderate coverage. MAC NW 10 is about my shade so I don’t think this one would work for me until summer.

    • The longevity is pretty normal on my skin, given that the coverage is quite light. I don’t wear primer, which I should probably start. When I checked, NW 10 was available online. Do you prefer a dewy finish?

      • I don’t like wearing primer either. Mostly because silicone seems to clog me up fast, no matter how much I exfoliate. I like a satin finish best.

        • And your foundation lasts without a primer? That is impressive. I think satin would be my favorite too, but I seem to only find matte or dewy, nothing in between…

    • I put it on my brush, not directly to my face, that would be a horrible mess. Now I am curious, which foundation did you get instead?

      • I actually got the Almay Clear Complexion. It’s a drugstore one and it’s my first time trying it, but so far it’s working really well for my skin and is a better color match than I had before!

        • I don’t think we get Almay around here. Is it directed at acne-prone skin?

          • Some of the reviews I’ve seen on it say that it does pretty well on acne-prone skin, but I don’t think it’s specifically directed at it. The Blemish Heal technology it advertises is mostly for reducing redness and blurring imperfections.

          • I see. It was the name that made me jump to that conclusion.

Great review! I have yet to find a foundation that doesn’t make my face break out, but this sounds like it would be nice being so light weight. And splashing my face with water is sometimes nice.

  • Splashing with water gives me just about the same reaction lols. What a funny way to market a foundation?!
It looks lovely on you though, I really prefer light to medium coverage so this sounds like it would be a good match for me. I’ve only ever tried one other MAC foundation before and that was the Pro Longwear Nourishing Waterproof which I quite liked at first, but the shade is too light for me now in summer and I don’t think I love it enough to buy a summer shade, although I do think that formula would be better suited to warmer weather.
I might see if I can get a tester of this one next time I’m at Mac, but as much as their shade range is extensive I find that the NW20 is too light for me now, but the times I’ve switched NW25 it just looks wrong to me. And the NC’s are way too yellow for me.
    thebeautybloss.com

    • I struggle with exactly matching my skintone too. NC 15 is the best guess, but can look a little yellow sometimes, especially if I pair it with bronzer and use a heavier coverage formula. But the NWs don’t suit me at all. The one time I was entirely happy was when they had the Matchmaster foundation, aimed at neutral skins. 1.5 was perfect in summer! Maybe ask for a Matchmaster sample as well, I reviewed it a while back. If you are interested, I´ll leave you the link.

      • I’ll have to take a look at that. I’ve always felt better in a foundation aimed at neutral as it seems to cancel out some of my pinkness, but not go that step too far into yellow territory. Thanks xx

  • Awwww, dang it. I was hoping this would be a good foundation for oily skins! I thought it sounded really great.

    • If you aren’t dehydrated, but only oily I don’t think it will be the best. I need the hydration despite my skins oiliness during the colder months.

  • Love the finish of the foundation!
