I think we all are old enough to know that advertisements and reality usually don’t match.

Sometimes even the claims sound a little odd to me. Case in point? The new MAC Studio Waterweight SPF 30 Foundation.

According to the sales assistant, your face after applying the foundation should look and feel like you just splashed it with water. Hydrated and glowing.

If I splashed my face with water, it would feel tight, my eyes would get a little red and my nose would start running. Not really that tempting, hm?

Does the foundation actually meet the advertisement claims? Let´s see.

What MAC claims:

Introducing an innovative foundation that delivers colour in an ultra-fluid, elastic gel- serum formula. With a virtually weightless feel, this formula is extraordinarily comfortable, lasting for hours. With stay-true colour and sheer medium buildable coverage, it softly blurs imperfections such as pores and fine lines, while also controlling oil. The addition of Moisture-Fusion Complex provides immediate and all-day hydration, leaving skin feeling quenched and silky to the touch. The unique dropper provides you with a drop of perfection.

Facts:

The frosted glass bottle contains 30 ml (1.0 fl oz) of product and will cost you 34,50€ in store or online (33 $ online here). There are many different shades available, so even very fair or very dark complexions should be able to find a match.

While the glass bottle looks very chic, it isn’t perfect for traveling. The “unique dropper”, basically a pipette, works really well in distributing the product and despite my initial concern doesn’t lead to a horrible mess, as the outer part somehow stays pretty clean.

 

The formula itself is very runny, and against my usually habit of using my fingers or a beauty blender for foundation, I preferred using a brush with that one.

The coverage is sheer, maybe buildable to medium when a brush is used. When applied with fingers or a beauty blender, a light coverage is the maximum I can achieve.

The finish itself is lovely, it looks very natural and dewy on my combination/oily skin. I preferred to powder my t-zone, but depending on the finish you are going for I don’t think you have to. It didn’t cling to any dry patches I had.

The formula feels hydrating and stays that way throughout the day,  while the wear time (no primer, no powder), just like expected with the sheerer coverage, is around 4-6 hours on me. It fades lovely though, without settling into fine lines and could probably be enhanced by using a primer or a setting powder.

Does it live up to its claims?

Most of them.

I do feel it on my skin, mostly due to the hydrating properties, so I wouldn’t agree on the “virtually weightless” claim, but call it lightweight.

It lasts several hours, stays true to color and offers sheer coverage, buildable to light medium.

Despite being pretty sheer, it blurs imperfections and fine lines, it evens out the skintone and leaves my skin feeling silky to the touch.

However I don’t feel like it works great at oil control.

Will I rebuy?

Possibly.

If there isn’t another foundation that I really want to try first. #beautybloggerproblems

Who do I recommend it to?

People with normal to dry skin, looking for a dewy finish and light coverage. I think this will work lovely on more mature skins.

If your skin is very problematic and you have a lot to cover up, this isn’t the right foundation for you.

If your face is very oily, you should probably opt for another one.

 

All in all, I have been loving the foundation for everyday use during the colder weather when I just want to look nice and fresh. For a night out I would probably opt for another one with heavier coverage.

But I am happy to report my face doesn’t look like claimed by the sales assistant. It looks way better!
