Spring Summer Trends 2016

With March halfway over, we are finally moving into Spring territory, and I for one am all excited about it.

As much as I love my purples and my brown smokey eyes, with the days finally getting longer and the trees showing some fresh green, it was time to dust off other colors and see what will be big in the upcoming seasons.

Some trends have been around for quite some time now, some  are new additions, but the variety is big and I am sure that there will be something for everyone.

So let´s dive straight into it, shall we?

Color on the eyes

Yes, metallics and bronze is here to stay, and to be honest I wouldn’t want to go all summer long without them, but vibrant colors like green and blue take the spotlight this season. If you want to venture out even more, yellow paired with purple will help you transition from winter to spring.

That may be all over the lid or as (graphic) liner, as long as it is bold, you are right on trend.

My take on it:

Blue and green aren’t colors I usually gravitate to, I think I will try and be little more adventurous this time around. As far as yellow goes though… I don’t think so! But if you want a lovely inspiration, created by a fellow blogger, here is Natasjas (Eyes painted black) lovely dolphin inspired look!

Eyeliner – the 90s way

Graphic liner was big last season, and it ain´t going nowhere, but just like Kylie Jenner brought the brown, matte 90s lip back, the smudged, grungy version Kate Moss once upon a time will be making an appearance. In true 90s style, the whole eye is lined and when it looks like you slept in it, you have done it just right.

My take on it:

I love black liner, and I wear eyeliner everyday. But I rarely line the whole eye, I feel like it makes my eyes appear smaller. Maybe it will grow on me?

Glowy skin/Strobing

Yes. Still.

Don’t put away your highlighters just yet, you will get good use out of them for the time to come. Call it strobing, glow or dewy, the trend is healthy, luminous skin.

My take on it:

I havent gotten on board with this trend and I don’t think I ever completely will. I like it on others, but on myself? Velvet is the finish I usually go for. But I do own a foundation that works perfect for this trend, as you can see in the picture below. (Read here)

Skintone looks more even, blemishes and hyper pigmentation need more coverage.
MAC Studio Waterweight SPF 30 Foundation – I like to powder it

Flushed cheeks

Tying in with the whole natural and glowy theme, the flushed cheeks that have been around all winter will stay for the warmer months.

My take on it:

I have been enjoying this trend very much, and will gladly continue come spring and summer. Cream blushes like the one I am wearing below (MAC Cream&Lip Color in „P.S. I like you“, review here) or „glow-giver“ like the Hourglass blushes and my personal favorite, the Max Factor Cream Puff blush (read here) are your safe bet for this trend.

What do you like the most of the upcoming trends?

Anything you will add to your repertoire?

  • Love all these looks especially the green and blue liner and eyeshadow. Chanel just bought out the two colours in a liner that I have been looking at, but they are expensive so trying out a cheaper version that I already had before I commit to buy. It’s a fun look for spring. Have a great day!

    • I have some liners around here that I need to put to good use before I buy new ones. Somehow I always buy these colors, but rarely wear them.

The smudged liner looks so cool but I could never pull it off! I would definitely feel like a raccoon! However, your take on it is amazing – looks great on you! I think I’ll have to stick with the flushed cheek trend.

    • I feel like I am too old to wear it the completely grungy way. Maybe if I ever go out to a punk rock concert again…

  • I’m not a huge fan of the sharp, graphic liner on me, so a smudged and grungy version of it sounds perfect to me! I will definitely try this trend!

    http://fannyanddailybeauty.com

    • Funny, I prefer my liner crisp and precise, but used to prefer the smudged version when I was younger. Maybe a matter of age?

  • Oh, a highlight is never leaving my side now! I have so many to use up! 😉
I do like wearing a dark coloured liner on the lower lash though, just half way through.

    Advaita | Blush Canvas

    • I did dig out my highlight after writing this post, but I have yet to put it to good use… I feel like I have more than enough shine by myself already.

  • Would it be bad if I said I was a bit excited for the return of some of those 90s trends? lol In all seriousness, while I like your typical liner look, you also look super lovely with your bottom lash line partially filled as well!

    • I can get on board with partly, but all of it? That will take some getting used to. But I will give it a go and cherish the memories of my nights spend at punk rock gigs back in the days.

  • This was such an interesting post, I know of the fashion SS trends but not the beauty ones. I’m not much of an eye person, all I ever wear is mascara but I really am liking the look of the grungy eyeliner, it’s not as heavy as it sounds. I think I might have to hop onto the glow trend because I love glow on the face, there’s something about the look that you created that’s tempting me! P.s I am so in love with your braided hair in the last picture ♥

    • See, this is where we can learn from each other, I have no idea about what is on trend in fashion this season. Except denim and stripes, I guess.

  • Brightly coloured eyeliners are beautiful but I prefer the black eyeliner. I also don’t line the whole eyes. Just the middle to the end.

  • Not sure if I will be jumping in that colorful eyeliner bandwagon. I love bright colors, but just not on my eyeliner, haha. Also, I love that healthy glow is still in trends! 🙂

    • I did wear it last year as a pop of color on my lower lash line, that way I felt more comfortable. Maybe that is a way to ease in?

  • Ooo, I really enjoy reading this, Anne! I don’t think I’ll hop on board with colourful graphic liners trend, it’s just not suitable for me however, I have been wearing lots of flushed cheeks, healthy skin and glowy, radiant skin looks. It’s nice to know that I am on trend even though I had no idea that I was… LOL!

    • I started by using it on my lower lash line, that made it a lot easier to get started and develop a feeling which colors suited me.

  • Probably no to colourful liners as I can’t imagine myself wearing anything different than black and yes to rest. I’ve been getting into strobing so good that it will be around for awhile, I can experiment more without getting myself so glowy!

    Ela BellaWorld

    • Serious question: Do you see a difference between strobing and highlighting? I don’t, but then again I am not even into highlighting, so maybe I am missing a focal point here.

      • I don’t think there’s much difference. At MAC I tried MAC strobe cream mixed with foundation and it gave dewy and luminous look. When I do strobing, I also apply a little highlighter on the jaw line as I don’t use any contouring/bronzing products then. I guess the main thing is achieving glowy, defined face without using any contouring products but with reflecting the light.

        • Okay, that explains at least a little difference. Strobing is contour and highlight without the contour.

  • I really enjoyed this post! I need to have a serious sort through my make-up & shake it up a bit now that Spring is here. I love how you recreated all of the looks & your skin looks amazing in them all! xx

  • Yes to glowy skin and flushed cheeks. I’ve been doing both of these already and I’m obsessed with achieving that perfect lit from within look.

    • I guess that is the trend I can be on board with the easiest. Flushed cheeks are exactly what my tired face needs right now.

I always wear eyeliner too but I agree with you about lining the whole eye. I have small eyes so I do not need to make them look smaller.
    http://www.toyastales.blogspot.com

    • I guess we don’t have to follow every trend. Will you try anything else?

  • I see the brown smokey eye reference! Lol
I love the eyeliner around the whole eye look on myself because my eyes are very big and I like them looking smaller, I’m so on board with that! The thing with the glowy skin is it only works if you keep certain parts of your face matte, otherwise you look oily. So I love the trend, but the forehead and chin and nose area gotta be matte.

    RachelShuchatMakeup

    • I really never got on board with it. I powder at least the t-zone, like you said, but so many people on You Tube seem to highlight exactly there…

  • Heeeeey, so cool that you included Natasja’s look 😀 What a fun post this was. I love the flushed cheeks look. Here in Japan they really like to that it to the extreme, but on their flawless doll-like faces it really works and doesn’t look weird.

    • As soon as I saw her picture, I knew I had to ask her permission. It is such a pretty look, and the perfect incorporation of blue, much better than I could have done it myself.

  • I love that dolphin inspired look, the blue is stunning on her brown eyes 🙂

I can’t quite get myself used to the smokey eyeliner look either but I suspect that’s more to do with the fact that I’m just terrible at applying eyeliner, haha. I have been trying a few times with the pencil I have, but nothing good enough to take a photo of yet!

    Away From The Blue Blog

    • Natasja is very talented, and the blue make up was too pretty to not include in this post.
And regarding the eyeliner: Just keep trying, we all need a lot of practice!

  • Cannot wait to try out colored eyeliners again 🙂 Love them for spring 🙂

  • I used to love it when I was younger. Maybe it is my increase in fine lines that prevents me from wearing it today.

  • I am so looking forward to spring and summer! I am the kind of girl that is all about colorful makeup, and find the neutral tones kind of boring 😀 not to offend anyone… That is the reason why I’m looking forward to all these trends 🙂 Awesome post and awesome recreations xx

    • No offense taken. The beauty of makeup is that we all like different things.

      • Oh, I don’t think your makeup is boring at all.. You do use colors sometimes… Some people don’t ever do that.. 🙂

These are all beautiful trends. I love the grungy liner, and your eyes look amazing with liner on the bottom. And Natasja’s blue shadow look is something I’d like to try. The flushed cheeks are beautiful as well, though the only way I can achieve that without breaking out is to have a few glasses of wine, haha.

    • Me too, even though I challenged myself to make use of my pinks and pastels this spring!

  • I like trying color on the eyes, usually on the lower lash line though. I haven’t done a full on colorful eye look yet. Something I’ll have to try, the blue is beautiful!
Love your take on the grungy eyeliner, I think it’s something I might like.

    • Yes, on the lower lash line is something I can get on board with as well. But maybe I will take inspiration from Natasja and try a full on version soon.

  • I am trying my hand at bolder eye lids and did a blue eye shadow this week, but I usually wear black liner and neutral shades. Like you, I rarely line the whole eye. Your 90s take on the eyeliner is my favourite here. I love highlighters. Thanks for the inspiration. /Madison

    • Me too, I get most excited about the flushed cheeks, to be honest.

  • You look lovely! I don’t apply colors when it comes to eye-makeup but maybe I should try! One of my favorite eye makeup must be 90s, quite natural and popping up the eyes! 🙂 Thanks for the post!

  • idu

I honestly love strobing on others too. Ive tried it but it just looks like regular highlight on me. I probably haven’t found the right product for skin as dark as mine. You are the pro, any suggestions? I currently use Makeup Forever pro sculpting duo in 2. Spring is surely upon us. Freshness everywhere. I love the vibrant liners and nail polishes.

    https://www.instagram.com/fashionably_idu/

    • I am no pro when it comes to strobing/highlighting, it isn’t a trend I like on myself, so I don’t have a lot of stuff. But many people swear by the Tatcha Dewy face mist or MAC Strobe Cream mixed into the foundation. Both don’t have much color to themselves, so they might work on deeper skin tones.

  • Carina Vardie

Except the colour on the eyes, I love them all, especially glowing skin! Thanks for sharing!

    xo
    http://www.carinavardie.com

  • I’m also not on board with strobing/baking. I like a little bit of highlighter on strategic spots for an evening look, but I don’t want my entire face to glow every day. Actually it does that by itself in the summer in the form of oil and I don’t think that’s pretty!

On the other hand I’m totally into the eyeliner trend. Colorful eyeliner is a great way to wear bright shades I would have a hard time using as an eyeshadow for example!

    Beaumiroir

    • I get you, my face glows all by itself as well, so I am more for the velvet-matte finish on a daily basis. I did like your green St. Patricks Day makeup though, I think you can pull off the colored eyeshadow very well.

  • This was a very interesting read! I actually totally support the blue and green shades. Not that I’ve been wearing them a lot, but I’d love to do so more! I have a lovely blue eyeliner, which I have been trying out lately. I love how it’s something a little extra yet subtle! 🙂 We’ll see how I get along with a green one!
