Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance – 100 years too late

Out of all the more cultural parts of our life, the only one where I feel truly at home at is literature. Ever since I can remember I was reading, lots and lots, and even though it isn´t nearly as much as it used to be, I consider myself a well-read person.

The others, like music and art, are things I enjoy, but don´t really know much about. So when I received the Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance palette in a giveaway, it got me thinking.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance
Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance

The renaissance as epoch that celebrated the rediscovery of ancient wisdom, the artists Boticelli, Da Vinci and Dürer, that was what immediately came to my mind. But how did that translate to color scheme and naming of the shadows? Google needed to help.

I am still not one hundred percent sure, but one thing needs addressing: From all the artists and philosophers they could have picked to name the shades, Vermeer was the wrong one. He is, albeit famous, one of the leading painters of the epoch Barock, almost 100 years after the epoch of Renaissance…

Any other flaws I found in the Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance palette? Let´s see.

Inspired by Dior Precious Rocks Holiday 2017

But short story even shorter, each month I choose a seasonal ad and try to recreate the models look with colors I already own.

I really wanted to get started on holiday makeup, mainly because every year I toy with the idea to throw a sophisticated Christmas party for friends and coworkers.

The idea inevitably gets buried with others like “Bake ten different kinds of cookies” and “Have all my shopping ready the week before Christmas the latest.” But should by some miraculous event I happen to host a party this year (or attend a party…) I wanted to be prepared in terms of makeup.

One look standing out to me when scrolling through the new releases was the Dior Precious Rocks Holiday 2017 collection. Red, bold eyeshadow, flawless skin, everything oh so glamorous. A look that will make you the center of attention for sure.

It was actually easier to recreate than I would have thought it´d be, so here we go: My version of the Dior Precious Rocks Holiday 2017 collection.

#pixipretties – Review, tutorial and swatches

This blog post contains PR-Samples and affiliate links. Please see disclaimer.

I feel pretty, oh so pretty, I feel pretty and witty and bright…

Are you familiar with West Side Story? It is, I have to admit, one of the few musicals I care about. This and Lion King. Everything else, think Starlight Express or Cats, are totally lost on me.

But back to the song. I heard it when I was 13 and never was able to get it out of my mind. Not because it is a masterpiece in tune and lyrics (I wouldn´t be able to judge that anyway), but because the feeling it describes is one that I wanted for myself.

#pixipretties Review, Tutorial and Swatches

I want to dance the streets, pitying every girl that isn´t me. I want to feel so confident in my own skin that I shout from the rooftops how perfect I am.

Not that I have yet achieved it, which may be a good thing given my singing skills, but 13 or 38, the quest continues. And anything that reminds me of that song is very welcome.

Like the #pixipretties collection that landed at my doorstep recently.

Indian Summer and some Guerlain goodies

They say anticipation is sometimes better than the actual event.

I find that to be especially true regarding anything weather dependent. How many times have you looked forward to summer barbecues outside and ended up inside because of hail and storm? How many times have you dreamt about snow ball fights in a winter wonderland only to shuffle through muddy pools in constant rain?

I know I have been disappointed numerous times, so when Flanconi (an online beauty store) reached out to me and asked for an Indian summer look, I decided to take matters into my own hands. It may be wet and cold outside, but here on the blog we´ll have all the gold and orange we long for.

And what can I say, after I finished filming the sun decided to make an appearance and I was able to actually shoot outdoors! I am not going to jinx it, but if we get a prolonged period of beautiful weather here in Germany now, I will claim magical makeup skills.

If not, this Indian Summer look will see me through the disappointment.

This installment, my recreation of the Givenchy L´Autre Noir Fall 2017 makeup, looks amazing on the model. But what really drew me in was the name „L`autre noir“. The other black.

Now I am a huge fan of black, but variations of black, like deep purple, blackened red or even the deepest, darkest green feel so mysterious. Perfect for the upcoming season, when the darkness slowly creeps in and the fog is covering the mountains in front of my window.

Beachy, Glowy, Bronzed makeup – Summer Vacation 2017

I don´t know about you, but I always have big plans for my upcoming summer holiday. Read at least three new books, exercise a lot, sleep ten hours a day and take time to experiment with makeup.

Because, let´s face it: The creativity I do develop at 6 am right before work is only directed towards developing the skill to brush my teeth half asleep without falling over. Adventurous and exotic makeup looks do take the back seat.

But, truth be told, despite packing half a suitcase full of products I don´t really spend much time on my makeup anyway. I prefer to invest my free time into people watching from a café while eating a croissant. Or two.

And in an attempt to pack streamlined (I will have a video up on what I bring so you can have a good laugh. Streamlined, ha!) I sat down and decided beforehand which look I wanted to give a go this time.

Beachy, glowy, bronzed. Out of my matte base comfort zone. But hey, it is a beach holiday after all!

I guess we all have a picture of ourselves in our head that not necessarily matches reality. For me, that is the Boho chick I want to be every summer. The one that wears maxi skirts, turquoise bracelets and tousled waves with random braids.

For many summers I was determined to make it happen, to match my outer appearance to my inner portrait, and every summer I was left disappointed. I just can´t be effortlessly chic, carelessly beautiful and look like I woke up this way. It is just not who I am. I either look like I really woke up this way, which is a look no one wants to see, or like I tried very hard.

Thankfully Lancome came to my rescue and the Lancome Summer Swing 2017 Collection gave me the perfect template to recreate a Boho look that I am actually very happy with.

Inspired by YSL Solar Pop Collection Summer 2017

The look that made the cut this time is effortless, summery, and (quite an exception this season) not featuring blue eyeshadow and orange lips. Not that I have any issues with that combo, I quite surprisingly really like it, but I have shown it here already and was up for some diversity.

According to Yves Saint Laurent, the YSL Solar Pop Collection is inspired by the vibrant colors and exotic adventure of a jungle safari, which took me by surprise. I did attribute solar pop to space adventures and Sci-Fi settings, but maybe that is just me? The promo picture though, a model casually leaning against a giant stone, palm leaves in the frame, does fit into the safari picture.

At least the kind of safari that you do in elegant clothes, wearing a full face of makeup. Probably the Glamping version of a safari, without the sweating and the dust and other things that inevitably would ruin your white silken blouse.

But enough with profane reality, let´s dive into the world of makeup, where anything is possible and wearable.

The „Inspired by“ series has been featured on this blog for almost two years now, and there have been a few changes to the format. Some noticeable (like doing a video instead of a written tutorial) and some probably unnoticed, but very important nonetheless. One of the latter has been the fact that about six months ago Mr. Loca kindly agreed to take my pictures (only the Inspired by ones, he still refuses to carefully arrange lipsticks). And so it was only natural that he had more of a saying in which looks we would shoot.

Out of curiosity I asked him what made him pick certain ads. Was it lighting, pose, artistic expression?

My everyday makeup routine – It is all lies

As much as I would love to tell you that my current everyday makeup routine was inspired by the crisp white snow against the red berries on the ilex in our garden, it would be a lie.

I started wearing this makeup in early December, when the holidays rekindled my love affair with red lipsticks. Which is technically the second lie, as my love affair with red lipsticks does never need rekindling.

My everyday makeup routine Winter 2017

Around the holidays there was no snow to be seen. Just grey clouds heavy with rain and brown, rotting leaves. Not the prettiest colors to use as makeup inspiration.

It still may be a seasonal thing though, because the colors I picked are less warm than what I usually go for, and as I learned on other blogs throughout the last weeks, many people tend to go for cooler shades in the cold (see Dagmaras beautiful winter look for example).
