Old wives mill – The Body Shop Nutriganics Drops of Youth Concentrate

A little further north from where I live is the federal state of Thüringen. Somewhere there, legend has it, a mill exists, called the „Old wives mill“. If you have grown old and tired and want to be  (and look) young again, you approach the mill, get thrown in at the top and leave at the bottom, all fresh and crisp. Rumor has it it doesn’t even hurt!

The Body Shop Drops of Youth Concentrate
The Body Shop Nutriganics Drops of Youth Concentrate

Is there a downside? Sure there is. Before entering the mill, you have to sign a list of all the follies you have done so far and promise to do each and every one again! Which is why the mill is sitting there, unused, as time goes by…

Now I don’t know about your (long) list of follies or if you would do all of them again, but I decided long ago I would rather stick to skincare than a magical device, and turned to The Body Shop Nutriganics Drops of Youth Concentrate, promising to take me back to younger looking skin.

What The Body Shop claims:

This innovative concentrate helps to enhance surface skin condition, leaving it looking smoother, fresher and healthier. Instantly hydrating. 99% of ingredients are of natural origin.

Facts:

The product is housed in a green glass bottle, containing 30 ml of product at a price of 26 € in stores or online. In Germany this is the only size available, if you check out the UK site, there are 50 ml at a price of 32 GBP as well.

I started using this serum in May 2015, and while I haven’t used it religiously every morning, I used it at least four times a week. There is still a tiny bit left in my bottle, so a little really goes a long way.

The serum itself is of a liquid consistency, colorless and has no distinguishable smell. A dropper is used to take out the product, and while I usually am a fan of these as they are pretty hygienic, I have to say this one didn’t work for me at all. It picked up barely any product, so I ended up using another one from an empty serum bottle I still had. Great thing I keep my trash for empties posts!

Favorable ingredients (horizontal line = third of ingredient list):

– Glycerin: Moisturizing

– Chondrus Crispus powder: Soothing, Calming

– Sodium Hyaluronate: Moisturizing

– Fagus Sylvatica Bud extract: Antioxidant

– Aloe Barbadensis Leaf juice: Antiinflammatory, soothing

– Adenosine: Improves cell communication

– Chrithmum Maritimum Culture filtrate: Plant stem cell, protective

– Babassu Seed oil: Rich in essential fatty acids, moisturizing

– Buddleja Davidii extract: Smoothing

– Malva Sylvestris extract: Soothing

– Thymus vulgaris extract: Antioxidant, can be irritating

Unfavorable Ingredients:

– Alcohol: Right up on part two of the ingredient list

– Fragrance

Does it live up to its claims?

Some of them.

It really feels hydrating when applied, is soothing and smooths out my skins appearance. As far as long-term benefits go in „enhancing the surface skin condition“ I am not convinced. Despite the immediate plumping effect of hydration I didn’t notice any change.

Will I rebuy?

I don’t think so.

There are lovely ingredients and it works well at hydration, but I would prefer something with less alcohol. While I don’t mind alcohol in general, I want the product containing it to really impress me, and that one didn’t.

Who do I recommend it to?

People interested in hydration and preferring organic skincare. But only if fragrance and alcohol aren’t an issue.

If your skin is sensitive, ask for a sample first.

Overall, I should probably consider to start looking for the mill after all!

Would you repeat every single one of your follies for the sake of being young again?

Or would you rather use the Drops of Youth range?

  • Yeah, the alcohol in it puts me right off it.

  • Kay (shoesandglitter)

I thought this would be a good product for me – my skin is always in need for serious hydration, especially this time of year. But the alcohol puts me off – my skin is also really sensitive, and I’ve had some really bad luck with skincare products which contain alcohol! So I will probably pass on this one. Thank you for the honest review. 🙂

    • Alcohol is pretty high up on the list, so I wouldn’t recommend trying it when you are sensitive. Maybe go for some pure hyaluronic acid?

  • it’s too bad that this product contains alcohol :/ it looks really nice, though 🙂 great review! xx

    • Do you avoid alcohol in skincare at all costs?

      • I wouldn’t say at all costs.. but my skin is on the drier side, even though I actually have a combined skin type.. but in moistruizers I don’t think there should be any alcohol…

        • I agree. There are some products where I keep up with the alcohol because I just plain love them, but if the product is just okay, I don’t rebuy.

          • Agree… if the product works, it can have whatever it wants, as long as I’m happy 😀 it’s not some kind of a principle that I don’t want alcohol in my product, it’s simply all about how it works 🙂

I have the bouncy sleep mask from this range and I really like it!

    • Me too, reviewed it only last week. There is quite a lot of The Body Shop skincare in my current rotation, now that I think of it. Do you use anything else?

      • Emma Haworth

I also have the Vitamin C Face Cream and I love it! I’m on my third pot now! X

  • It’s hard to find a good serum that lives up to it’s promises. I’m surprised it has alcohol in it as it has a drying effect. Thanks for sharing your review!

    • Me too. But a lot of products contain alcohol that I didn’t expect to, especially moisturizers aimed at dry skin…

  • I like this old wives‘ tale about the mill but I think I’d stick to skincare too!

My skin is rather on a sensitive side so the alcohol in the serum would probably irritate my skin but I love how much I always learn from your skincare reviews!

  • Too bad this contains so much alcohol, because it does sound like an overall nice product. Loved that old wive’s tale too! 🙂

    • Well, maybe I´ll start looking for that mill in a few years time anyway.

  • I love that you include the old wives tale, Anne, it’s really nice to learn about tales from other countries. While I love a very good hydrating serum, I need my serum to do more than that too so I think I’ll pass on this. I have so many skincare to go through recently that Ive started purging some of it and giving the others away to my MIL and friends. Maybe I should ask the hubster to start using them too? LOL!

    • Ask him, I would love to know what he says. If I approach Mr. Loca with anything more than a toothbrush and deodorant, he tells me that men age gracefully and have no need for cleansers, moisturizers or the likes. I can always count on my mother and sisters to grab anything I don’t want to use anymore though.

  • If you ever look for Old wives mill and find it, please let me know! However my first option would probably be sticking to skincare too before considering to do all the follies… I got a sample of it and I wasn’t really impressed with it however skin feels so soft after using it.

  • I think i might go a trip to the Mill. How much fun to relive youth again! Sure, I made some mistakes (didn’t we all?!) but I’ve always said if I had the chance to do it all over again, mistakes and all, I would.
As for the serum, it sounds nice enough, but from the sounds of it there’s more effective out there.
    thebeautybloss.com

    • There isn’t one mistake I regret so much I wouldn’t want to make it again, but loosing all my life experience, confidence and strength I have gained with the years? I mean, you would have to, otherwise you wouldn’t be able to do the same things again in exactly the same way.

    • Maybe I would too, if my skin was that sensitive. But my skin is much more forgiving than my confidence, so it is skincare over the mill for me.

    • Ha, don’t worry, there are many more serums out there for me to try.

  • Interesting read and Old wives tale about the mill. hmm, not sure if I’d repeat every single folly for mere youth, but we’ve all made some mistakes, so I might consider it, haha. Pity about the serum. Happy Friday.
    Holiday Style

    • It is not about not wanting to make mistakes, but everything again? Oh no.

  • I’ve never done anything that bad, so I might go for a trip in the mill. Only if the youth reverses time on injuries and illnesses though! Too bad there wasn’t much in the way of long term benefits! My current hydrating oil is Fresh Seaberry Oil. It’s $18 USD for a .5 ounce size. I get in the smaller size so it stays fresher.

    • I keep hearing about Fresh skincare, but never got my hands on anything to try it.
And I guess youth would reverse injuries and illnesses, but how would you feel knowing that they will come back one day?

  • Efrain

Wait, you can ask samples in The Body Shop at Germany?

Damn now I feel cheated, here in Mexico they don’t give samples so buying there it’s quite the Russian roulette.

    Hi, from Mexico 😉

    • They have pre-packaged samples of most products, and testers for the rest. i hate buying expensive stuff when I cant test it first. The makeup brands are very bad with samples around here though.

Greetings to Mexico! It has been six years since I last visited, it was such a lovely trip.

  • Thanks for another great, useful review! My skin is super sensitive and I thought I grew out of it as I got older and was definitely wrong when my skin started breaking out after trying another new product. For me I like to stick to the same line for that reason.

    • I totally understand that. Which is your skincare line of choice at the moment?

It’s funny how cosmetic companies use the packaging the get our attention. Something about that strange applicator makes the product seem more scientific or something. • Really need to try the body shop but not so sure about this product since there’s alcohol in it ;/

    http://www.fionnac.com

    • There are better products for a first impression. Maybe try the Drops of Youth Bouncy Sleeping mask instead. No alcohol and really hydrating.

  • The fact alcohol is the 2nd most used ingredient puts me off and therefore I don’t think I’d buy it. I prefer more gentle products. I’m surprised to see so much alcohol in a potentially hydrating product, as it tends to dry my skin out quite a lot. x

    Renata | Speaking Beauty UK

    • Many moisturizers have quite a lot, too. I did some research on that topic, and the alcohol helps the other ingredients to penetrate, thus increasing the effect. And while it isn’t drying the slightest, so there has to be some truth to this claim, I am just not wowed enough to go get it again.

  • Well, if you have ever smelled an oil without added fragrance, you would probably agree that it really helps with application. But I know it is horrible when you have allergies. I am actually quite surprised to see how much fragrance is added, even if it is „natural“. I never realized until I started listing them for the blog.

  • Ashley Christabelle

Im using this, except it’s a scroller instead of a pipet! Works wonders for me when my eyes looks drowsy

    http://www.ashrealasitgets.blogspot.com

    • Are you using the serum or the eye concentrate? I own the eye concentrate too, and it comes with a roller.

      • Ashley Christabelle

Oh yes, I’m using the eye concentrate!

        • I have that one too (reviewed it in October), and I like it a lot better than the one mentioned here.
