Are you a neutral girl? Then MAC Matchmaster Foundation might be just the one for you

MAC was my first makeup love, and it will always hold a special place in my heart and on my drawer. During my first year of building a collection, all I bought was MAC

I am a little embarrassed to admit I own at least one piece of every LE released in 2012, sometimes waiting in front of the store with other beauty lovers on release day, just to make sure I would get my hands on the desired item.
And even though these days are long gone and I stray and buy other brands on a regular basis, MAC eyeshadows and lipsticks will always be a big part of my stash.
M.A.C. Matchmaster Foundation in 1.5
My first ever highend foundation was MAC, and I keep going back to try another one, even though I have never been overwhelmed.
My most recent purchase was the MAC Matchmaster Foundation in the shade 1.5.

Unlike other MAC skin products, the shade range isn’t divided in NC and NW colors. This foundation claims to be neutral, neither warm nor cold, and thus suit every skin color equally, something that instantly drew me in.

My skin is light, but with yellow undertones, leaving me looking sickly when I am super pale and limiting the shade range at the drugstore dramatically, as light foundations there are usually pink-based. The warmer shades, however, are too dark most of the time.

What MAC claims:

„Uses Shade Intelligence Technology to bring customized shades in a flawless demi-matte finish with medium, buildable coverage and broad spectrum UVA/UVB SPF 15 protection.
Gives perfect color purity without looking ashy or chalky, reduces shine on the skins surface and helps to absorb excess oil. Conditions and soothes the skin while minimizing the appearance of pores and imperfections.“

It comes in a glass bottle with pump (thumbs up for that) containing 35 ml (1.18 fl oz) and retailing for 37,50 € here. There are 13 different shades to choose from, ranging from fair to very deep.
The formula is quite thick, but easy to blend and doesn’t settle into my lines or pores. It feels a little silicony, but not too slippery, very lightweight, and there is a faint chemical smell that disappears after blending.
I need one pump for my entire face, maybe a second if I want extra coverage.Titanium Dioxide is used as sunscreen, so be careful as it may flashback in photos.
As it claims to „condition and sooth the skin“ I looked for active skincare ingredients, something I usually don’t do in foundation.
Active ingredients:
– Tocopherol (Vitamin E): antioxidant
– Sodium Hyalorunate: locks in moisture
– Lecithin: lipid balancing
– Xanthan Gum: smoothes

How it wears

1. No makeup, just under eye concealer and eye makeup done:
Spot marks on my right cheek and chin, and a nice zit on the left side of my mouth.
No makeup except eyes.
2. One layer of M.A.C Matchmaster, no added concealer or powder:
My skintone looks even, it is mattifyed without looking flat. The spot marks and the zit could use extra concealing.

3. After six hours of wear, no concealer or powder:
There still is some coverage left, but the shine is back on my forehead and the imperfections are more visible. If set with powder, as I usually do, it would have lasted longer.

Does it live up to its claims?

Yes, mostly.
I already talked about sunscreen in foundations here, so I will not go into detail now, just know you will not get a SPF 15 using one pump of this.
The finish is demi-matte, the coverage is medium and buildable and it works very well with my skin tone. The oil-control capabilities during the day aren’t sufficient for my skin, I have to go back in with powder after two or three hours.
It contains more skin care ingredients than I would have thought, which is a bonus, and my skin feels nice and hydrated when wearing it.

Will I rebuy?

I would, if there weren’t so many other foundations waiting for me to try out. During the winter months, 1.5 is to dark for me, but it is a great match in the summertime.

Who would I recommend it to?

People with normal to combination skin. If you are very oily, the sheen will be to much, and if you are very dry it will cling to your dry patches, as it isn’t that moisturizing on its own.
But if you don’t have severe skin concerns, and are in the market for a medium coverage foundation with natural finish, this one is for you.

Have you tried Matchmaster before?
And which finish do you prefer? I admit, I am all about matte finish. A little old-fashioned, I know…

  • I dont own a single mac foundation however i have used pretty much every concealer they have..i know thats strange…this one looks to b a great choice

    • Which concealer is your favorite? MAC Concealers and I never got along too well, I must admit.

  • Your skin looks great! Like I said on Twitter, I've also used this one and I remember liking it a lot. Only the smell bothered me a bit.

    • Yes, the smell isnt that great. I try and tell myself that means not too much fragrance was added. You said you didnt wear foundation nowadays?

  • I Love this foundation, definitely repurchasing ! xx

    • You did a dupe post on your blog, didnt you? Link it in the comment, so others can have a look.

  • I never wear make-up, but I'd love to try that 😀

    • So give it a go! Why dont you wear makeup? No time, no need, nothing you like?

  • I have never tried this foundation. As far as Mac I have only tried Face&Body and you know how I feel about it and a few years ago I also bought a bottle of Prolongwear foundation and I liked it a lot, it was a little too light for me in terms of color. Btw, your skin looks really great without any foundation on! Hope your travel's going good so far! Thinking of you!

    • Face and Body is one I want to try, too. Everyone is ravin about it, you included.
At the moment, I am sitting on my bed in NZ, tired but at the same time wide awake, at 10 pm. The flight was exhausting (22 hours of flying, plus stop-over), but Little Bean was very brave. After arriving here, we enjoyed the summer weather! 20 * Celsius and blue skies!

    • That's awesome and I am glad to hear you made it safe there. That's a super long flight and I am impressed the baby did so well! 20 C degrees? I am jealous!

  • Ha so funny thing: despite the fact that I know I'm NC25-30, I've actually never owned a MAC foundation! I have been trying the new Matchmaster concealer and really liking it tho. I really need to push that review out ASAP! I like how this one does for you, although your bare skin is already effing awesome as it is! I also agree it's hard to repurchase anything at all nowadays, because new formulas keep coming out, and you think the next best thing is still out there 🙂

    • I know, right? On top of that, a foundation lasts me for ages. With two BB-Creams and one foundation, I am set for more than a year without the need to repurchase. And I hate letting things go to waste, so I am hesistant of rebuying something that just sits in my drawer.

My skin isnt as nice as it may look in pictures! right now I have two red, angry zits as travel souvenir, but I admit I try to invest in skincare more than foundation, to make it look as good as possible.

  • I need to try MAC..I don't own a single MAC product..bad!! i know..this one seems like a good product to start with 🙂

    • If you dont own anything, start with a lipstick or an eyeshadow, these are their best products!

  • I've never tried MAC foundation actually, but this one looks quite good indeed.
    Great review 🙂

    • Thank you, Lu. Everyone is raving about Face and Body, so this might be the one to try if you want a safe bet.

  • I've only tried Mac Face & Body but Matchmaster is probably what I'd pick if I was to buy another from Mac. I really like the finish, it looks very natural. 🙂

  • i have this one and Im quiet liking it myself
    nicely reviewed 🙂

  • Thank you.
Which shade do you use? And do you powder or just leave it be?

  • I powder it down, too, but i do with almost any foundation.
