Fake to look awake – How to hide the lack of sleep

There are many reasons why you are looking tired and worn out, the most fun being a weekend spend with friends, partying all night and catching up until the early mornings.

Less fun, but more common are deadlines at work, late-night studying for your exam or, in my case, a newborn.

Now the best thing you can do is obviously get some rest, but in case you have to be somewhere and need to at least look like you slept more than three hours straight, makeup is your best friend.

  • Oh you’ve nailed it, such a transformation! 🙂

I agree that newborns mean you need something on your face to try hide the lack of sleep. A total of 3 hours sleep across a very disturbed night does not make for a pretty face in the morning! I’m so frustrated I’ve run out of my BB cream, I have nothing to hide tiredness now! (It was out of stock when I managed to brave the shops to get it).

    Away From The Blue Blog

    • Oh no! I stocked up on the things I needed before giving birth, cosmetic wise, because I remembered how hard it was to get to the shop the first time and I figured it would be even worse with two kids to handle. It is easier than I figured, but I am still happy if I don’t have too many places to be.
I´d say send the husband, but who knows what he will come back with?

      • I foolishly thought I had lots left in the tube…should have stocked up before just in case! You were clever!

        • Or I take any excuse for shopping. Your choice.

          • True! It’s nice to have a reason to get out the house sometimes 🙂

  • Lovely video and tips! Keeping it light and luminous always works better than adding too much coverage, even a heavy mascara can sometimes make me look tired!

    • For me it is mascara on my bottom lashes. If I put it there, I look more tired immediately.

  • I’ll save the video to watch later (as I’m preparing lunch right now!) but I can tell by the pic I WANT WHAT YOU ARE WEARING! lol, you are glowing so beautifully I could swear you spent the day in a spa!
I not only look tired, but I look like crap, because I’m having my premenstrual days (I’m all swollen, especially my eyes) and also a cold/allergie has strike me yesterday. I only got 3 hours of sleep last night (translation deadline today got me awake until 3am) so… yes, I definitely needed a hand this morning.

I will definitely take a nap this afternoon (if the little one agrees 😉 )

    • I wish I had! But I don’t see any spa days in my near future. Even though I got a gift voucher for a facial for my birthday, to use after delivery. I just need to figure out when to use it. I bet I will fall asleep throughout the procedure though.
Fingers crossed you get the chance to nap.

  • This is just a great video! Love it.

  • wow, amazing transformation. I recently started a new job that is actually depriving me of sleep so thanks for these make up tips.

    • I hope the new job is interesting and promising, not only sleep depriving. What do you do`(If you don’t mind to share, that is).

  • A great video! Thank god for makeup! I have recently noticed my concealer really sets into the lines under my eyes and no matter how much I blend it, it’s still doesn’t look good. Any suggestions on how to fix it?

Also what eye brushes are you using? They look so fluffy and nice.

Lastly, I love the vanity in the background!

    Agata http://herandmakeup.com

    • Do you set it with powder? Or have you changed eye cream?

The brushes are Zoeva, I am planning to do a video on my makeup brushes soon where I will explain in more detail.

  • You did such a good job! And in so little time 🙂 I love the transformation and you definitely look more awake!

    • Any tips to add from a mother of twins? I can imagine you got no sleep at all in the beginning.

      • Haha yes you are right I didn’t 😀 You have it pretty well covered here. xxx

  • I certainly needed this. I have been getting few hours to sleep and my face certainly looks dull and dark. I really liked the way you have brightened up the skin. 🙂

    • I hope for fun reasons. What are your tips to look more awake?

      • No, I am a freelancer and keeping with the deadlines is being very hard for me nowadays. There is nothing very specific which I do, I make sure to prep my face with Rose water which really brightens up my skin, then I like to use some concealer and a bright lipstick to take attention away from my eyes. 🙂

  • What if I don’t stay up partying all night, I haven’t studied for tests in 7 years, and I don’t have a newborn to look after, but still look like The Walking Dead first thing in the morning?! 😉

  • We could all use a little help with this every now and then but I would think this would be even more helpful for mommies with newborns. I swear by the nude liner trick as well.

    • I feel much better if OI at least look well rested whenever I look into a mirror, even if I know it is all painted on.

  • The Body Shop bronzer really warms up your face beautifully, Anne. And great tips on mascara on lower lashes might make the shadow under the eyes more pronounce and round cheeks is younger. Can I request some bloopers at the end of your videos? That’s one of my favourite part on any Youtube videos. LOL!

    Shireen | Reflection of Sanity

    • Bloopers? I don’t do bloopers, all my videos are recorded in one setting without interruptions! But I will keep it in mind for the upcoming ones…

  • Wowza, look at that transformation! It’s amazing what a difference a few well-chosen products and 10 minutes of your time can make.

  • This is an incredible natural look. If I saw you on the street, I would never have guessed you had a sleepless night.

    • That is the point, It is bad enough if I know how tired I am, I want to have at least the choice of who to share it with. Do you have a go-to outfit if you are feeling under the weather?

  • Your tip of using bronzer to help you appear brighter and more awake is spot on – I’ve recently started doing so and have noticed such a change (terrible sleeps at the moment)! You’ve put together a really great transformation here Anne 🙂

    • So sorry to hear you haven’t been sleeping well, I hope it is only temporary. Which bronzer are you using?

      • I hope so too! I’m using a bronzer by Mii Cosmetics at the moment. Thanks for the great tips in this post 🙂

  • I love Bobbi Brown concealers! And that bronzing powder looks good!

    • It restored my love for bronzers, it is perfect for my skin type. What bronzer do you use?

  • Certainly looks like you’re fresh and ready for the day in the „after“!! Great work. I’ve wanted that Collection concealer for so long, but it’s really hard to get a hold of when you live in the USA, haha.

I love this awake look. It’s amazing how much of a difference this make up makes. The Smashbox liner really opens up your eyes. I’d like to try that one. I don’t have anything making me look really tired, except allergies, but that is nothing compared to being up all night with a little one. I hope you are both doing well 🙂

    • We are, thank you. And I know with every passing day there will be a little more sleep, so I am patient. Plus I got to film a fun tutorial, so it is a total win for me.

  • Yulia

You look so fresh and glowing; I would never tell you only slept three hours the night before:) Makeup is definitely a girl’s best friend, lol. Thank you so much for this tutorial; I will bookmark it for a day I look extra tired.

    http://www.yuliannova.com/

    • You are welcome. I hope your reasons for being tired are more fun than mine.

  • Wow the Bobbi Brown Corrector works fantastically well on you! I just bought it in the shade that was advised by a makeup artist (Extra Light Peach Bisque I think) and while it does correct well it looks a bit dry. My undereyes have been awfully dehydrated in the past few weeks…

    Beaumiroir

    • Just like the rest of my skin my underyeyes are pretty oily, or at least not dehydrated, so that isn’t an issue for me. I am surprised to hear that though, as it seems to be pretty creamy.

  • I do coffee + B12. That works, too.

    • I don’t drink coffee, I don’t like the taste, but my tea helps a lot, too.

  • I also use the Bobbi Brown corrector. I like to dab a little bit of Clinique Airbrush concealer on top of it to brighten up my eyes even more. Great tutorial, btw!

    https://themakeuptrain.com/

    • I never tried the Clinique Concealer, but it has been recommended to me several times, so I think I will go get it eventually.

  • Thank you. I am German and have a British godmother while watching American YT-videos. I guess my accent is all over the place

  • Never underestimate the mental pick me up makeup gives us, that is a great point.
I have to rely on tea (and sugar) in the mornings, I don’t drink coffee. Never have, despite my job.

  • i thought you looked great at the beginning as well! i wish i had your natural beauty. loved the video too. the look is lovely.

    • But you do! I remember the picture you shared once, wearing a hat at a family weekend (I think) without any makeup, and I think you looked fabulous. We all have some flaws that are gigantic to ourselves, but I think the most important thing is the overall beauty and radiance, and you have such a bright smile that I cant imagine anyone seeing you as anything else than a natural beauty.

  • Omg Anne! You look amazing!! I just added the Clarins Instant Light ip Perfector in my handbag recently and I’m loving it so much!

  • The Sunday Mode

Wow I can really see a difference here, this is the perfect tutorial for me as well because I’ve been getting barely any sleep lately and it’s starting to show. I think I’ll try this tutorial tomorrow, but I’ll adapt it to the products I already own.

    http://www.thesundaymode.blogspot.com.au

    • Of course. The products are only examples, no need to go out and buy a ton of new stuff. Did it work?

  • This was perfectly timed for me. I’m 39 weeks pregnant, and I know I’m going to be looking quite tired shortly, so getting some under eye concealer tips was quite helpful!

    • Yes, it is my second child, so I knew what to expect. It is amazing with how little sleep you can function. And 39 weeks? That is exciting! Girl or boy? Fingers crossed for a speedy and safe delivery.
