My updated evening skincare routine for summer | Doctor Anne

I recently read an article online that talked about the different personality traits those posses that prefer to shower in the evening opposed to those that prefer to shower in the morning.
It was something along the lines of „reflective and romantic“ versus „seize the day“ – I admit it was light reading, not a scientific paper, but I figured where I would fit, be-cause right now, at the heat of summer, I am a „shower morning and night“ person. I work out at night, so I take a shower then, but my bedroom is hot and stuffy, so I need to shower in the mornings as well.
Summer seems to make me a Double Shower person. Much like it makes me a Double Cleansing person in my evening skincare routine!

My updated summer evening skincare routine
Yawn – I haven´t been sleeping too well in the heat lately…

I shared my thoughts on Double Cleansing here, in case you were curious, but I rarely bother unless I am sweaty and have several layers of sunscreen on my face, or, in other words, it is summer.
So let me quickly talk you through my routine!

Cleanser

I start with an oil based one, either The Inkey List Oat Cleansing Balm (full review here) or, a more bougey option, the Oskia Renaissance Cleansing Gel (Review). That step doubles up as makeup remover, mainly for the eyes of course. There isn’t much makeup left on the rest of my face at the end of the day…
Both rinse clean, but I still follow up with a gel cleanser, I just love the fresh feeling. My current one is the Murad Essential C Cleanser (read more about it here). It foams, but is not stripping.

Tretinoin nights

Yes, you can use your retinol in summer (I explained why and under what circumstances here), so I keep using Tretinoin three nights a week, which is the sweet spot for my skin.
I won’t go into much detail here, as my Retinol Evening Skincare Routine doesn’t change much and I have shared it numerous times before, but in short: I use the Goodmolecules Niacinamide Brightening Toner (Review), because I love pairing Niacinamide with my Tretinoin, follow up with the Zelens Power D Treatment Drops (Review), which for me helps reduce irritation, and when that is dry, apply my Tretinoin – done.
In case you are wondering how to introduce Tretinoin with minimal irritation, I wrote an article about that here.

Toner

Not necessary, but nice, so I keep doing it. My current favorite is the klairs Supple Preparation Unscented Toner, patted into damp skin and directly followed up by my serum. And if you are confused by the Toner, Tonic, Essence names, here is an explanation.

The Ordinary Buffet + Copper Peptides

Serum

This is when I reach for The Ordinary Buffet + Copper Peptides (compared to the original one here), which is both hydrating and gives me some peptides, or the Good Molecules Discoloration Correcting Serum (Review) to help combat the hyperpigmentation that makes its (re) appearance in the summer, mainly around my temples and on my cheeks.

They recently changed the formula, increasing the content of Tranexamic Acid to 2% as well as the packaging which now lists all ingredients with their percentage (the skincare nerd in me is very excited about that!).

Eye Cream

My current eye cream is the Retinol Eye from The Inkey List, which I haven’t used long enough to give you a full review, but so far I like it.

Moisturizer

My choice for night cream is actually not a real night cream, but a so called „sleeping pack“, although I admit I never really understood the difference: the dear klairs Freshly Juiced Vitamin E Face Mask, a jelly like cream that features heavy on hydration and niacinamide, which I love in general and for hyperpigmentation prevention. A great product (full review here) if you make sure to apply it at least 15 minutes before you go to bed, so it has time to sink in completely.

Not many surprises for my regular readers, I guess!
