Now that the snow has finally melted – Spring/Summer 2015 in Makeup

I know, Spring officially started about a month ago.
But to be honest, I didn’t feel it.
The first day of spring, I woke up to snowflakes. Well, two or three snowflakes, but that isn’t the point.
The point is: I was still feeling my heavy knits, my deep brown smokey eyes and berry lips, and going for pastels and floral skirts wasn’t exactly on the menu.

Sorting out the Makeup bag for spring

With the warmer weather slowly creeping in and green and flowers showing outdoors, that changed. And so I spend the last fortnight clicking away through ads and articles, trying to get the feeling of Spring/Summer 2015, makeup wise.
And if you, like me, expected pastels and sweet innocence, you are in for a surprise.

As always, these things are meant to be inspiration. There are no rules in makeup.

1. The Base:
Complexion should be natural looking and dewy. If you feel comfortable, going bare-faced is absolutely on trend. If, like most women out there, you want a little help, the sheerer finishes are your friend. Use Concealer to pin-point-conceal, skip powder whenever you can, and embrace your freckles.
Talking about freckles: If you don’t have them, paint them in using a brown lip pencil.
Your blush should be more of a natural flush, so soft pinks, nudes and a hint of peach are big on trend, and cream blushes have their moment.

How do I feel about it?
I like a medium coverage to cover my acne scars and I don not have the patience to pin-point conceal every morning. One thing that worked for me is covering the „problem area“ (on the centre of my cheeks mostly) with concealer and going over the top with a lighter coverage.
Also, I prefer a matte base, but have softly started adding highlighter for a more dewy finish.
A subtle blush is right up my street, and I own a variety of nude shades, so this one is easy for me.

2. The eyes:
To my surprise, purples make a strong appearance, in eyeliner as well as eyeshadow. Usually going strong during fall and winter, this season they are here to stay.
If purple isn’t your color, blue is the way to go. From bright blue smokey eyes to teal liners, a variety of looks made me think of the late eighties. Only better.
Of course, no summer is complete without a bronze-brown smokey eye. This year with heavy, messed up liner or smoked out using charcoal, to achieve the „I partied all night“-look.
Liner in particular is smudged rather than crisp, and not necessarily stays at the lash line.

Liner is allowed everywhere. (MAC Trend Forecast S/S ´15, Source)

How do I feel about it?
I much prefer purple to blue, as I think it goes better with my eye color and complexion. And even though I have a soft spot for the lived in, smudged liner looks, they are something I would only wear on a night out, but never to work.

Purple eyeshadow (and a slightly startled look…)

3. Lips:
Setting the obvious nude paired with the smokey eyes aside, lips are bold. Red lipstick, preferably matte (or even just lipliner) are seen everywhere, but just like the purples, the berry lips are here to stay.
To set the look aside from winter berry lips, there is no lipliner used, but the edges are feathered out with your finger, giving a softer feel and an effortless vibe.

How do I feel about it?
To be honest, I am fed up with berry lips at the moment. I have had my fair share during the lasts months and crave other colors.
A matte red lip on the other hand sounds good and maybe inspires me to make more use of my gigantic collection of red shades.

How about you:
Which one of these trends are you loving?
Or will you stick to pastels?

  • Nice post! I like the dewy, natural looking skin. I am trying to transition to lighter bases and foundations too but I like wearing my bolder/brighter blushes.

For eyes, you know purple is my favorite colored eyeshadow so I wear it any time of the year. I have started wearing more blues recently and I like them, they go well with my blue eyes and surprisingly they don't look obnoxiously "80s". I also noticed a trend for a thick lower lid liner, not sure how I feel about that.

For lips, bold lips are not what i associate with spring- but I like them. I need to wear reds more often too! (Maybe you should do a post about your favorite red lipsticks?)

  • Yeah. I'm so over the dark berry lip, lol 🙂 I don't even think I ever was 'under' it 😉 I like the naked skin trend though. And you and your gorgeous glowy skin can totally pull it off.

  • Monica L

Beautiful natural everyday makeup!:) I love fit me concealer by Maybelline!

  • I love the Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturiser on you – gives you a lovely fresh, glowing complexion 🙂 I am definitely feeling pink/nude lips at the moment – not sure I will be keeping the berry trend aline in the warmer months xx

  • Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturiser looks so good on you! I love using purple on my eyes, but subtly like as eyeliner. Makes such a difference <3

  • Aww I'm so sorry to hear you're not feeling spring yet! The weather has been INCREDIBLE here (almost a little too good for April if that makes sense), so it's all dresses and bare legs for me! I'd to a light base (but maybe not such a radiant one) and purple eyes. A strong lip as well but maybe not red? I don't know. Red lipsticks and I have a strange relationship. I can pull the grand majority of reds off, but I don't seem to like them more than fuchsia, berry, coral, or other bright shades!

  • Great post
Would you like to follow each other ?
    I'll follow back after it

  • Love purple on the eyes, especially in the spring (although something about purple smokey eyes….) Lovely post!

  • To be honest, I love purple eyeshadow all year round, so I am excited that I will be on trend for once. The blue we get to see is lovely, too, but I somehow never get it to work on my skin…
Which color do you wear most?

  • Thank you for stopping by.

  • It really improved over the last two weeks, as there are so many flowers outside all of a sudden. Am I the only one thinking they just appear over night?
The weather was lovely here starting Tuesday, but I spend most of my time indoors at work, and by the time I´d leave (around 5 pm) it was already starting to get chilly, so no bare legs for me. Which is great, because they are so pale…

I own about 12 different red lipsticks and rarely wear them, because a real red feels like a special occasion lipstick to me. Corals or berry tones are something I wear day in, day out. I really have to change that, or else I´ll drown in red lipsticks one day.

  • Colored eyeliner is really a great way to amp up the makeup in a subtle way, especially when choosing a color complimenting your eyes.
Your eyes are brown? I can imagine purple looking lovely on them.

  • I usually powder it when I wear it, because i am more into a matte base, but I am slowly embracing the glow…
Any pink lipstick recommendations? I have been looking for my perfect pink for years.

  • I like it a lot, too.
    Thank you for stopping by.

  • Aw, thanks Melissa.
I would be curious to see berry lips on you, I have to say. Whenever I think of you, I think about your signature look: Gorgeous brown smokey eye and a subtle lip.

  • My favorite red lipsticks? This is like asking me to pick my favorite child.
But then again, I only have one child, so it is even more difficult, because I literally own a red for every occasion.

About the thick liner on the lower lash line: I have seen it, too, and I am positive I do not like it. I was there when it was on trend for the first time, tried it and looked like a drowned body. Actually I have rarely seen someone able to pull it off outside a magazine.

Your blue eye makeup looked amazing, I remember your post. I just can't get blues to work on my skin…

  • You skin looks so healthy and glowing!! 🙂 xx

  • you look flawless!

  • You look stunning! I am loving the dewy skin look! I've switched over from a heavy CC cream to Bare Minerals' Complexion Rescue. I like to keep my makeup neutral, so I'm glad this is the style at the moment! 🙂

  • I have been seeing natural makeup popping up all over YouTube and I am seriously digging it. I've been rocking the no makeup makeup look all over the face and then with a pop of deep berry lips. I find it hard to wear pastels makeup, lot of it washes me out. :-/

    Shireen | Reflection of Sanity

  • Pastels aren't the most flattering shade on me, too, so I actually like that they weren't the only thing to wear this spring.
At work, natural makeup s a must, so this trend is great as it allows me to use products I already own. Like about three dozen brown blushes…

  • Thank you.
It is a great feeling if you suddenly are on trend with something you have been doing for years. You may count yourself a trendsetter for all it´s worth!

Which CC Cream did you use? I only had a sample of a pretty light in coverage one.

  • Thank you.

  • I really prefer a more matte base, but this trend seems to be growing on me. Who knows, maybe I´ll even start to wear highlighter on a daily basis?
How about you, are you into that "Glowy" look?

  • I most often wear blue or maroon as eyeliner 🙂 Smokey eyes I like to keep natural though.

  • Sounds lovely. I love a natural smokey eye for daytime, but go all out in the evenings.

  • I looooove natural makeup so so much. However the freckles painted on are a tad weird. And how much do you love Laura Mercier products? I still need to find whether I can buy it over here somewhere!

  • Oh my goodness, what acne scars? Your skin looks freaking amazing! It's so soft and dewy!

    Amazing makeup!

  • I don't need to paint freckles on, I have enough naturally! I'm also not into berry lips for spring/summer. For me it's a time for pinks, peaches and corals, although a classic red always works.

  • A red lip is such a great look, I really love it, but somehow rarely wear it. I will try and take the trends this year as inspiration to wear red more often.

  • I would love to have freckles. Ever since reading "Anne of Green Gables" as a child I dreamt of being a redhead with freckles.
Didi you always embrace your freckles or did you try to get rid of them?

  • Thank you, Avery.
Which trend is your favorite for this season?

  • This is the Tinted Moisturizer, it has medium coverage, even though you wouldn't expect that. It feels very lightweight.
Which coverage do you usually choose?

  • I tried painting on freckles for one of the "Inspired by…" Looks and it is more difficult than it looks. I struggled with finding the right shade, all my pencils were too warm.

I really enjoy this base and got to try my mothers eyeshadow sticks (yay for makeup loving mums!), which are great, too. Apart from that I have no experience with the brand.
Is there a possibility to get color matched somewhere?

  • idu

Another great post. I am so all over the place with lip colors. I guess my mood determines what I go for. It's been the soft pinks a lot lately tho, :-).

  • To be honest, my mood is the reason I choose different colors more often than a trend is. But hey, that´s what makeup is all about: Going with your emotions.

  • I was always told they were cute! I think the trend to fight "sun spots" is fairly recent and no one was calling freckles "sun damage" just a few years ago. Maybe if I was a teen now they would be a problem for me, but I like them. They have always been a sign that summer's here!

  • I love dewy skin and light makeup this time of the year and tend to switch to bb creams or tinted moisturisers (or recently the EE cream from Estee Lauder). Also love purple eyes, as it goes really well with my brown eyes. I feel like I'm still on the hunt for my perfect purple shade, though. As for the lips, I'm a nude / pink lips lover all year around and especially this season. I don't follow trends most of the time. Just wear what makes me feel good. Your makeup looks lovely by the way. 🙂 x

  • I prefer purple to blue too on the eyes.. but it's fun to try new things 😀 I never considered drawing on freckles.. but heck, it would be fun just to try xD who knows xD lol. I always love berry lips.. but all the sun brings out coral, bright pink and orange for me… especially orange <3 Thanks for sharing!

  • Jaa

I wish I could send you some hot air from over here. ;D It's almost unbearable and I dread going out during the day! I'm not sure how I feel about the freckles painted on the model in the first pic. Something about it just seems off. :-/

Anyways, can we just talk about YOUR GLOWING SKIN?! Girlllll I'm dying to know your secret!

  • This is the Tinted Moisturizer I am wearing, combined with the oily sheen my skin gets all by itself. I am happy to be on trend for once, but I think I will always prefer to powder my face…

I love freckles, but not to that extent as they did it on the model. She looks like she just had a downhill experience with a mountain bike…

  • I agree, it is fun to try new things. This is the way I use "trends", to force me to try something new. Apart from that I believe in wearing whatever I feel like.
Orange must look great with your skin tone!

  • EE Cream? What does the EE stand for?

Which purple shade have you tried so far and hat are they missing to become your "perfect shade"?

And I agree, makeup should be like fashion: You get inspired by trends, but in the end you have to feel comfortable in what you wear.

  • Freckles and sun damage are two different things, aren't they? Sun Damage or age spots are bigger, they appear after you get older and they usually don't fade when there is no sun around.
    I like freckles, too.

  • It looks great! I like light to medium. I have a lot of scarring but I really don't like using layering a lot of products. I go for full-coverage only on special occasions;)

  • I couldn't agree more. Trends are nice and all.. can even help you get out of your comfort zone.. but there are no rules to playing with makeup in my book.. (well, sure there are…you want to apply your foundation, concealer, eyeliner properly.. surely… but you catch my drift? :D)

  • Exactly! But now I keep seeing people call their (or someone else's) freckles "sun damage", including beauticians!

  • EE stands for Even Effect. Silly alphabetical names aside, the product itself is lovely. If you want, you can read my review here 🙂 x

  • Thank you, I will see what you wrote.

  • These things get mixed up quite lot.

  • Absolutely.
