Soft smokey eye tutorial – Favorite Face of December 2015

If you have been around for a while now, you may have gotten used to my „Favorite Face of…“ series. Of course I cant tell whether you are bored out of your mind or looking forward to my monthly makeup ramble, but I have been meaning to keep it up.

Soft brown smokey eye with a hint of purple

Now I have started this month with a yearly favorites, so the „Favorite Face of…“ is a little late and probably does no longer count as „December Favorites“, which is why I named it „Tutorial“ for the upload on You Tube.

Not very surprising it features a soft smokey eye, using browns and a hint of violet (I feel I have been wearing barely anything else this winter), paired with either a nude or a bolder lip.

You all know the disclaimers, I am no professional, just an enthusiastic amateur, both when it comes to makeup and to videos, but I hope you enjoy nonetheless.

Products used in this video

  • Maybelline „The Eraser“ in Nude (Review here)
  • MAC Studio Waterweight SPF 30 Foundation in NC 15 (Review here)
  • Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer in „Light“ (buy here)
  • MAC Paintpot in Painterly (buy here)
  • Alverde Eyebrow compact in „Blonde“
  • Alverde Eyebrow Gel in „Clear“
  • „I love my P2 collection“ Eyeshadow bar in „Violet“ (Review here)
  • lash n  grow Tinted Lash Enhancer in „Amethyst“ (Review here)
  • Maybelline Mattemaker Face Powder (Review here)
  • MaxFactor Cream Puff Blush in „Seductive Pink“ (Review here)
  • Lancome Grandiôse Mascara in „Black“ (buy here)

I am not quite sure why the eyeshadow started looking that purple about halfway though the tutorial, so I included some pictures (taken with different lighting) and edited them into the video to show you the finished result.

What have you been wearing a lot?

Are you over the winter purple and smokey eyes already and craving spring makeup?

  • Thanks for the tutorial Linda! I like smokey eyes! xxx

  • You look gorgeous! The Waterweight foundation looks good on you, very light and radiant. I personally apply it with a beauty blender, but the brush application looks great too. I like these colors on your eyes, they suit you very well.

    • I did apply it with a beauty blender a few times as well, but the coverage is a little bit lighter that way and my skin is really acting up at the moment, so I switched to the brush. It gets a little more streaky, but the coverage is medium.

  • I know I said it before, but again purple eye makeup really suits you. Nude or red lips, purple makeup looks good with both of them. I like how glowie your skin looks without applying foundation, is it the pregnancy glow :)?

    Ela BellaWorld

    • This is the pregnancy hormones, turning my skin into an oils slick once again, like it was back when I was 14…

  • I’m craving spring, but not necessarily spring makeup. Actually, I think that the look you created here would be perfect for spring, too!
As for the editing, I don’t really know if I prefer this editing or the previous video. I’ll need to watch more tutorials, haha!

    • I think depending on the lip color it could be easily transitioned to spring. After watching both back to back I feel like I prefer the voice over, so I guess I will stick to that for the time to come. The clicking noises of the products annoy me a lot.

  • I have Painterly as well, used it twice and just sits in my drawer now for the last year. It just creases like mad on me, any tips?

    • Are your eyelids prone to creasing in general? I never had issues with any paint pots creasing on me, so I cant really be of any help.
What eye cream are you using? Or do you apply foundation to your eyelid area before that? How does your Painterly feel when you apply it to the back of your hand, is it slightly powdery or slippery?

  • Love this look! It’s a nice makeup look for the cooler months! I was wondering if you’ve done a post on which brushes you own? I’m awful at using brushes/ finding fairly decent ones so I would be really interested to see which ones you use regularly!

    • Actually I haven’t, but I may film a video on that topic if you are interested in seeing what I use. Most of my brushes are Zoeva, and I got them a few years ago. They still hold up nicely and were rather affordable compared to other ones.

  • I love purple smokey eyes all year around and this eye look is great! 🙂

  • Really love it, i am totally this type of eye makeup xoxo

  • Love this look!! The MAC Foundation looks really good on you!

  • Oh, you look so gorgeous Linda! I personally love having a smokey eye with a pop of colour, like purple. The two go hand in hand together! <3

    • Yes, brown and purple are an awesome combination. And for the summer time bronze and turquoise.

  • There is something so chic and elegant about jewel toned smokey eye looks! I’ve been all about clean eyes, dark cream blush and nude lips lately.

  • Yes, it looks really purple on my screen!

    • There is proof: It doesn’t help buying professional lighting if you don’t have a clue what to do with it! I will have to experiment a little more, I guess.

  • Oooh so what do you think about the Grandiôse mascara so far?

    • I like it. It gives volume more than length, stays put all day and holds the curl. But the never satisfied me is still missing a certain something, maybe a little more length? And it need a lot of attention to get it off the lashes in the evenings, my cleansing oil alone doesn’t do the trick.
You really like it, don’t you?

      • Yes, I do, but I absolutely agree with what you said. I really like that it holds the curl well, but it’s true that it’s not very lengthening and harder to remove!

        • It is a very good mascara, and probably among the best I have tried so far. But I don’t think it will satisfy me completely and will become the only one repurchased.

  • You’re gorgeous! I love the purple and brown shadow combination, and I think you executed it here quite well. 🙂

    • Thank you. Your nice comments really brighten up my day, I really appreciate your time and stopping by.

Great tutorial! I think both formats, the talking through and the narration are great. When I was doing my food videos I started with talking and then changed to narration mainly because it was easier to edit. I love these videos and love the eyes in this look.

    • I think at the moment I will stick to narration for the tutorial part and talking through for favorites/hauls etc.
Are your food videos still up to watch somewhere?

  • You look great with this make up 🙂
    xx Elisa

    • Thank you Elisa. Have you been wearing smokey eyes lately?

      • I usually don’t wear make up on eyes, only mascara, but this is so pretty that I want to try it!

        • Just use a soft color, that way you don’t have to worry about blending too much. These soft browns are a great way to start.

  • Looks lovely Anne and great video. Gemma xx

  • I love the colours you used on your eyes, I’ve been wearing a lot of neutrals and violets myself in January. This look really suits you.

  • This is such a lovely look, and I loved watching it to kick-start my Monday Morning ♥

    • Thank you, Trishna. I hope your week is off to a great start.

  • You look so very pretty with or without makeup. Love, love your accent. :)I think the purple eyeshadow really suits your complexion. I want to try the Mac Studio Waterweight, it look so dewy on your skin. Thanks for the inspiration and new product ideas.

    • It really has a very dewy finish and feels very light, but hydrating at the same time.

  • This looks very nice, Anne! Your skills are waaaay better than mine, haha 🙂

A soft smokey eye is so romantic and right on trend. It was all over the Tom Ford runway. You application was flawless.

    • I wish I could say i got my inspiration from there, but I have a hard time keeping up with the runway trends. There are just too many!

  • You look amazing, thank you for sharing such a lovely soft smokey tutorials.

  • I really enjoyed your video. The whole look is gorgeous and you look flawless. I didn’t know you are 37 years old, and I’m glad to know because I’m 30 and I feel so old with all these amazing teenager bloggers! Hope you have an amazing week! xx

    • Haha, I feel you. When someone who has been blogging for years talks about going to their prom or about life at uni I feel like I should call myself a granny blogger more than a beauty blogger…

  • Is the liner the Lash n Grow in Amethyst? Whatever it is, it is gorgeous! I’m going to watch the video now!! Easy to see why this is a favorite face!!

    Much Love,
    -Stephanie Eva

    • It is, have you tried it?

      • No, I haven’t. I really want to though, the color is seriously beautiful!

    Have a nice week, Linda.

  • So cool, Linda! Fab job, lady! The tutorial turned great and I love your purple smokey eyes and the products you’re using in the video.

  • I have started applying Maybelline Instant Age Rewind before my foundation after watching you doing it in your talk-over video and I love how natural it looks under my foundation. And how are your feelings about the mascara, Anne? It’s on my list to purchase and I want to pick it up soon but I’m not sure if it’ll help with curl.

You’re getting more comfortable in front of the camera and I’m starting to see your sense of humour too! Keep up with the videos, Anne! You’re seriously doing a brilliant job!

    Shireen | Reflection of Sanity

    • I haven’t made my mind up completely yet. I like it a lot, and the only real downside is that it is a little hard to remove in the evening (which equals non-flaking throughout the day), but I am not sure if it is worth the price tag. Regarding the curl I will use it today and see how that goes, I haven’t paid much attention to that yet. Will drop you a line vial twitter tonight.

  • I love the soft violet tone! I can totally seem myself rocking this type of look through winter, especially since the shade goes so well with green eyes!

  • I use the Lancome mascara above and love it, and also currently using Dior. I usually don’t use much bold colour on my eyelids, just neutral tones. But, I think I may get back to using more colour. I am still enjoying winter makeup, so of course I love smoky eyes! 🙂 Nice video tutorial! Thanks!

    • I have a great variety of neutral eyeshadows as well, probably more than I could use in a lifetime, but I like to add a little pop of color every now and again.

  • Love the softness of your eye makeup yet it is still pretty smokey 🙂 Pretty one! -Maireem

  • You are looking beautiful… loved the plum colora on lid…

  • I love it for daytime, it just adds a special something without being too much.

  • Nadia

Lovely look, hon! It’s great that it’s not a dramatic smoky eye so it’s wearable during the day – woohoo to that. I also love the touch of purple (perfect for my green eyes), I am planning to try and recreating this eye makeup while watching your video 🙂

    • Purple really makes green eyes pop. Please tweet me a picture if you like the result!

  • Belle M

I love the look and I now feel torn between the talk through style and the voiceover lol I was so sure I loved the voiceover when I saw that video. I love both styles now! =D

    • I guess i will keep both. Voice-over for tutorials and talk-through for the rest.

  • I’m still trying out the smokey eye look and I think I’m starting to like how it turns out. But I still want to do more before I attempt to show it off to others. I’m a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to that. I love your whole makeup, and I’d love to get my hands on the Lancome Mascara – it looks so gorgeous. And of course, the MAC foudantion but then again, who doesn’t want to try those out? (and everything else too)

You’re look fabulous and beautiful as per usual!

    Ella Pinto

    • I really can´t say anything bad about the mascara, except for the price.
And smokey eyes can be quite tricky with all the blending required.

  • I love the brown with a hint of violet look. The purple eyeliner is stunning! x
