Best of Beauty 2017 – My makeup and skincare favorites

I am not one to dwell in the past.

Yes, the things that happen to us do shape and affect us, no denying that. But I do believe that it is my choice what defines me.

On some occasions though, I immerse myself in times (long) gone, relive sensual experiences in my mind, remember scents, textures, pleasure…

Wait, that sounds like I am referring to a kinky paperback with a castle and someone in a ripped dress on the front. I am not!

I am actually talking about the Best of Beauty 2017! I am here to share with you what I loved the most, be it makeup or skincare in the past year.

Questionable reading choices might be discussed elsewhere…

Fall Favorites 2017 – Being unique

This blog post contains PR-Samples and affiliate links. Please see disclaimer.

Are we ever as unique as we like to think? Most of us, especially those that have any kind of creative outlet online, like to think that their content is fresh and special and easily distinguable from others.

We put “our own twist” on things, have a theme in our pictures and invent fancy names for even fancier blog post series.

And then, one day, we take a step back and realize we are doing what everyone around us does as well. Slightly different, maybe, but not as extraordinary as we would have liked to believe.

Fall Favorites 2017

Last time that happened to me was with my Favorite posts. You may remember I started to get bored (struggled to find enough new things) to keep up a monthly series.

I decided to turn it into a “New In and short reviews” kind of video.

Which didn´t satisfy me either.

Finally, what a revelation, I decided to only do them occasionally.

Turns out, quite a few of my favorite blogs went there already, posting whenever they felt like doing it. I am so yesterday…

But you know what? I don´t care. Sometimes you don´t have to be unique, you can take inspiration to find whatever works best for you and happily stick with it, knowing that quite a few people seem to feel the same way.

Indian Summer and some Guerlain goodies

They say anticipation is sometimes better than the actual event.

I find that to be especially true regarding anything weather dependent. How many times have you looked forward to summer barbecues outside and ended up inside because of hail and storm? How many times have you dreamt about snow ball fights in a winter wonderland only to shuffle through muddy pools in constant rain?

I know I have been disappointed numerous times, so when Flanconi (an online beauty store) reached out to me and asked for an Indian summer look, I decided to take matters into my own hands. It may be wet and cold outside, but here on the blog we´ll have all the gold and orange we long for.

And what can I say, after I finished filming the sun decided to make an appearance and I was able to actually shoot outdoors! I am not going to jinx it, but if we get a prolonged period of beautiful weather here in Germany now, I will claim magical makeup skills.

If not, this Indian Summer look will see me through the disappointment.

My Summer Essentials

I bet you are tired of me babbling on and on about my holiday already. But I can´t help it, I am excited.

Only a few days from now I will be flaunting my legs under the sun of France, listening to the waves crashing on the shore and sipping on a cold drink. At least this is what I hope for. Holidays with kids have a tendency to not go like planned.

But at least I want to be prepared. Not in the sport and diet kind of way, I have long given up any beach body plans.

In the beauty department, of course. So let me quickly talk you through my summer essentials.

Guerlain Terracotta Collection 2017

I have been on a winning spree lately. Not in life, I am way too superstitious to jinx myself by saying that I was winning at life.

No, makeup wise. And the actual winning as in winning a giveaway.

After saying that I will of course no longer win anything ever again, but that is fine by me. Because last month I happened to win quite a few bits from the Guerlain Terracotta Collection 2017.

And like any good blogger would have done, my first thought was to write a review on the collection that is already out and available on the website here.

Inspired by Guerlain Les Tendres Collection Spring 2015

If you are unfamiliar with the Inspired by… series, you can click here for more information. Short story even shorter, I try to recreate the makeup a model wears in the ad of a seasonal collection with the makeup I already own.

And even though I know January is technically still winter, I went for a spring collection this month, to get us in the mood for warmer weather.

Guerlain Les Tendres Collection Spring 2015

I just loved the soft smokey grey eye with the peach cheeks and lips. So fresh and dewy!

To be completely honest, this comes very close to my everyday makeup look in spring. I love peachy cheeks on my pale skin, as well as a soft lip with a smokey eye.
So the makeup wasn’t the biggest challenge here.
The facial expression was.

That look though…

I know that “The Sparrow” (round eyes, lips parted) is the legit heir of “The Duckface” in taking selfies, but to me it looks incredibly naive and (sorry) dumb. At least in myself.

I have seen lots of women rocking it, but I cringe looking at me that way. My father would have told me I looked like “Eine Kuh, wenn es donnert.” (may translate to: “A cow facing thunder”).

But enough of that, on to the makeup.

Close up of the eyes

After trying to give my brows the straighter, fuller appearance the model rocked with my Alverde Eyebrow Set in Blonde (and noticing my powder is far off my natural brow color), I started by applying MAC All Races all over my lid, blending it out with MAC Bamboo in the crease for some warmth.
For my lower lash line I had to mix two shades: MAC Showstopper, a dark brown, and MAC “Random Silver Shade”, a silver I can’t remember the name of, as I owned no shadow similar to the one in the picture.
My inner corner highlight was MAC loose pigment in “Universal” (LE), applied with a wet brush.
After smoking everything out, I applied a thin line of L´Oréal Intense Liner in Black to my upper lash line and loads of Artdeco Ultra Effect Mascara in Black (review coming soon) on top and bottom.

On my face I used MAC Prep and Prime BB Cream in Light as base (review coming soon), covering my undereye shadows and blemishes with MAC Studio Conceal and Correct Palette in Light (review coming soon).
After powdering with Maybelline Matte Maker (review coming soon) I applied The Body Shop Honey Bronzer in 02 at the outer part of my face and highlighted the center with Maybelline Fit Me Concealer in 15.
MACs Mineralize Blush in “Peach” went on my cheeks.

As my lips are quite pigmented, I had to color them in with a nude MAC Lip Pencil (“Naked Liner”) before applying MAC Prolongwear Lipglass in “Persistent Peach” on top.

And no, I am not sponsored by MAC, I just genuinely love (and buy) a lot of their stuff.

How about you?
Are you ready for spring yet?
And is this a look you would wear?
