Bigger is better – I am old enough to remember those slogans.
Back when I was young (CENTURIES ago, people!), minimalism wasn´t really a thing. You had to always have more. The newest, the latest, the biggest.
It didn´t matter if you did need it. Or even use it, for that matter. You just needed to HAVE it. And while minimalism (and low-buys) seem to be everywhere these days, I feel like some of that more is more mentality is still around.
Take skincare ingredients for example – some seem to think that the higher the percentage of “active ingredient”, the better the product, not taking into account that your skin can actually only absorb a certain amount, and once that amount is reached, the rest goes to waste.
The effect is called bioavailability, and for Vitamin C it seems to be somewhere around 20 – 25%.
Which means that a formula containing 30% Vitamin C, like THE INKEY LIST Vitamin C Serum, essentially contains more than you can use.
Is this a bad thing? Not necessarily. But the higher the percentage, the higher the risk for irritation – so let´s take a closer look at THE INKEY LIST Vitamin C Serum.

A few days ago I had a conversation with Lindsey (who blogs at Sustainably Savvy about green beauty and her zero waste journey) about the “right amount” of products to include into a Beauty Empties video.
I mean, you basically need to get people interested in you talking about trash, that is hard work!
On top of that you don´t want to show too many products – I mean, I love watching empties, but if I see the video is an hour long, I will never click on it – but you don´t want to show too little product either. If all you have is an empty bag of cotton pads and a shower gel, you don´t really need to get started.

You know what the hardest part of a low-buy is? You actually can’t just go out and just buy all the things that tickle you’re fancy.
Okay, I should have known that before I declared my Low-Buy 2019 on the blog, and obviously I DID know that, but I didn’t know just how hard it would be! I developed a habit of keeping up with new releases over the last year, a great thing for a beauty blogger, but not exactly great for a low-buy beauty blogger.
So I had to find a creative way to deal with shopping restrictions, preferably while creating new content, because that is the ultimate goal, isn’t it?
Here you go – I present you a new series: “New Skincare Releases – What is worth buying?”.

Once the New Year Excitement has worn off, all we are left with is the cold, dark and grey reality of winter in Germany. No snow covered slopes to brighten the outdoors here, at least not on a regular!
When going outside seems to be no fun at all, and you need not only protective layers of clothing, but also protective layers for your soul.
Now don´t tell me you don´t know what I am talking about, chocolate is an excellent protective layer for the soul for example.
As are oils. Posh, golden droplets pressed into your skin – pure bliss

It is no secret that I love testing new skincare, and while I am not invested in the famous 10 step Korean regimen, I admit that there are nights that I am not far from using that amount of products.
It is no secret either that I am not a fan of clutter and wastage, and you don´t have to be a genius to see that this combination can easily lead to trouble. I mean, I do only have that one face, and if I keep purchasing new stuff I will eventually drown in a pile of half empty bottles.
Even worse: When doing my 2018 Beauty favorites (see here) I realized that even if I really fall for a product, I usually don’t repurchase.
Why? Because there are always three others lined up that need to be finished first, and by the time I have gone through all of them, I most likely forgot about the one that rocked my world.
So with 2019 still fresh and new, I set myself a goal: I would build a basic skin care routine out of my favorite products, one that consist of as little steps as possible, but still has everything my aging, acne prone skin needs.
So today, dear friend, we will talk basics. The four steps that your skincare routine should include no matter your age or skin type. The basis on which we will build your best routine ever!
It is funny that as soon as a New Year starts, new buzz words appear out of nowhere. My top three so far? Pollution, prebiotics and low-buy!
And while I won´t go into detail on pollution and prebiotics (both skincare related) as I have dedicated videos planned on those topics, I figured I would join in on Low-Buy 2019 and tell you how I plan to do it.
In all honesty, I have been on a Low-Buy for more than three years already. Ever since I went on maternity leave with my daughter and my disposable income suddenly reduced dramatically, I tried to shop my stash both for makeup and skincare.
And, shock horror, this has seen me through three years now with still having unopened products in my drawers. Which is obviously fine with most makeup, but slowly gets problematic with skincare – even unopened most items are expired by now.

When I wrote my post on „How to accept failure“, I got a ton of lovely comments telling me to focus on all the things I had achieved in 2018 instead of dwelling on what hadn´t worked as planned.
Great advice indeed, so let´s put things into perspective and see what amazing new beauty items I discovered in 2018 because of blogging. I mean, would I really slather so much stuff on my face, constantly switching to the newest skincare item if it weren’t for the sake of writing reviews on here? I don’t think I would.
As it is the nature of this blog, you will find much more skincare items on the list than you will find makeup, for several reasons, and I will talk you through all of them in the video below, which (as always) I recommend you watch on You Tube and in HD.

The first review of the year feels a little like the first snow. Everything looks different, feels different, and you are suddenly very conscious about the footprints you are going to leave.
Well, after the first hours of winter wonderland everything will turn into the same soggy mess it was before, slightly grey, really wet and clammy. At least this is true for German first snow, so I guess it will be true for this German Beauty Blog as well.
Same reviews, same ramblings, same blog, basically.
Now that we dusted off the first layer of new excitement, let´s focus on the review at hand. THE INKEY LIST Retinol
And just like that, another month has passed, and with this, 2018 comes to an end. Did it drag on? Did it fly by? I have heard both.
But I am not here today to reflect on the year that passed, no. I want to talk about the month that ends today, my hectic and sugar filled December.
Although maybe hectic isn´t the right word (sugar filled is, no denying that). Maybe eventful is more fitting, given that I thoroughly enjoyed every event I attended, Christmas related or not. I visited a Christmas Market at our local zoo with the kids, which was magical (despite me getting Whamed on December 2nd!), met up with people I hadn´t seen for almost a decade and went on my first LARP in six years.
I wouldn´t mind going on like that, maybe cut back a little on the sugar (New Years Resolutions and such), but putting an emphasis on the people in my life that make me happy.
