Taking out the trash 16 – Empties February 2018

This blogpost contains PR-samples and affiliate links. Please read disclaimer.

When I was filming this video, I was pretty content with myself. Not only did I like the way my hair looked – call me vain, but these things can make or break a day -, but I was satisfied with having yet another batch of products finished to show you.

After starting to make a conscious effort to actually finish products and not let the last bit go to waste while saving it for a special day, I felt like I made really good progress.

Taking out the trash 16 – My February 2018 Empties

Great progress!

Once I finished editing, I turned to reading my favorite blogs. And stumbled upon this blogpost („10 tips – How I finished 300 beauty products in one year„), written by the lovely Sal.

Yes, you read that right. 300 beauty products. THREEHUNDERT. Suddenly my empties list looked really sad in comparison.

Max Factor Lasting Performance Foundation – Time will tell

This blog post contains affiliate links. Please see disclaimer.

Last time I visited my DM, I was gushing over the new display of LOV makeup they had put up. New eyeshadows, new blushes, new foundations.

The excitement was real! But as always in life, if something new comes in, something old has to go. And sadly, LOV had replaced Max Factor. My current favorite drugstore brand.

Only time will tell if LOV. can excite me as much as Max Factor did (which I can still get, just not in MY DM), but at least it brought to my attention that I had filmed a foundation review on the Max Factor Lasting Performance Foundation earlier this year, but never got around to upload it.

So if you hear me talk about hot summer days, don´t be fooled, I have not suddenly moved to another country. I just still wanted to share how the Max Factor Lasting Performance Foundation worked for me.

Inspired by … Jill Stuart Summer 2016

If you are not familiar with the „Inspired by…“ series, click here for an explanation.
But short story even shorter, each month I choose a seasonal ad and try to recreate the models look with colors I already own.
Dressing up and awkward posing included!

This month I really wanted to do something with a hat (silly idea, as it turned out), and something blue, so I chose the Jill Stuart Summer 2016 ad for it´s beachy and summery vibes.

Now I had forgotten that I lost my white hat last year, so I had to make do with a big straw hat. Plus the hand positioning turned out more challenging than I would have thought.

But see for yourself, upon common request I added some outtakes at the end that explain what I mean.

MaxFactor Creme Puff Blush – Are they a dupe?

A dupe for what you may ask? A drugstore dupe for the famous, but expensive Hourglass blushes of course!

MaxFactor Creme puff blush in "Seductive pink".
MaxFactor Creme puff blush in „Seductive pink“.

To answer that right away: I don’t know.

I don’t own any Hourglass blushes, so how would I be able to tell? But before you click away, disappointed, I know someone who COULD tell. And to get her to do that, I need your help!

So if you want to know how and what I think of the MaxFactor Creme Puff blush I own, keep reading. Read more

Favorite Face of … October

If you are not familiar with the „Favorite Face of …“ series, click here for a little introduction. Short story even shorter, it is the makeup that I wore most during that month, featuring the favorite (as in most used) makeup products.

Many of you will know by now that I am usually not wearing much makeup when working. But as I am home at the moment (read here why), I was able to go all out and enjoy fall makeup at its finest.

My substitute – Max Factor Masterpiece Colour Precision Eyeshadow in 03 „Coffee“

I don’t like coffee.
Or, to be more precise: I think it tastes absolutely disgusting and makes me want to gag.
It doesn’t matter how much milk there is in it.
It doesn’t matter how much sugar was added.
It doesn’t matter if it is part of Tiramisu.
I just can’t stand it.

Max Factor Masterpiece Colour Precision Eyeshadow in 03 „Coffee“

When my husband brews himself a fresh cup early in the morning, or when my girlfriends order a giant cup of Latte after a day spend shopping, I get a little jealous.
Drinking coffee is such a cute ritual, a little mini-break, a treat to yourself, and I will never have it.

So I indulge in coffee-related things whenever I get the chance.
My latest little sweet treat is Max Factor Masterpiece Colour Precision Eyeshadow in 03 „Coffee“.

What Max Factor claims:
Masterpiece Colour Precision Eye Shadow´s shimmery shades will amaze you with their staying power. Precision applicator for immaculate eyes. Can be used alone for a sultry shimmer across luscious lids. Use as a base under powder eye shadow for added depth.

One tube, easy to confuse with a lipgloss if it weren’t for the colors, contains 8 ml and retails for 7,50 € in your local drugstore or on Amazon here.
It is available in seven different shades, most of them leaning towards neutrals or toned down basic colors like blue and green.

The color itself is really creamy when applied and allows for quite some playtime before it settles. This is a good thing if you want to take your time blending, but if you are in a hurry and start blending to early, you will most likely blend most of the product away.

Even though the shadow is called „shimmery“, I don’t see any obvious glitter either in the tube or applied. A soft, pretty sheen is what transfers to my eyes and just as claimed, the color can be worn as a subtle wash (just apply and blend) or build up (apply, let it dry, blend the edges, reapply to taste).
You will never reach the intensity of a full on, deep smokey eye, but for my everyday needs it works great.

Wearing three layers to achieve the desired depth

Despite it taking its time to dry completely, I didn’t find it to move around or crease on me, even when worn completely on its own. Fading will start after around six hours if I don’t prime my lid (which I usually do), but it disappears evenly.

It works great as an eyeshadow base itself, I really like pairing it with a golden powder eyeshadow for some extra depth.

Does it live up to its claims?
Yes, except one.
It is shimmery, it works great as base, it can be worn on it´s own. Check, check, check.
But: Precision applicator for immaculate eyes? I mean, this is the applicator:

Max Factor Masterpiece Colour Precision Eyeshadow in 03 „Coffee“

Almost as precise as your usual sponge applicator I guess.
But I don’t mind. I don’t want this to be my eyeliner, but a base or an all-over lid color, and I will blend the edges anyway.
So I paint it on and then use either a brush (if I am feeling fancy) or my fingers and it looks perfectly neat.

Will I rebuy?
Yes. If I ever manage to finish this one, that is.
So far I don’t see me running out of it very soon.

Who do I recommend it to?

The color selection is safe, the price point is great, and you can use it sheer or more intense, just as you like it.
Now I can t compare it to any of the high end liquid eyeshadows out there, simply because I don’t own any, and it may be that there is a special ind of magic to them I just cant see, but if, like me, you want to try if this whole liquid eyeshadow concept is for you, this one will be a great one to try.

Do you own any liquid eyeshadows?
And what are your favorite Max Factor products? They seem to have quite some gems!

Favorite Face of… May

If you are not familiar with the „Favorite Face of …“ series, click here for a little introduction. Short story even shorter, it is the makeup that I wore most during that month, featuring the favorite (as in most used) makeup products.

Favorite Face of May, wearing the MAC Cream Blush in P.S. I like you on cheeks and lips

In last months installment I told you that I usually go subtle when I go to work, relying on neutral eyes and natural lips.
Well, let´s just say that last month my love for smokey eyes got the better of me. My colleagues will have to deal with it, I guess.

But without further ado, the makeup.

What have you been loving last month?
And are you all eyes or all lips at the moment? Or just all all?

A natural flush – My Blush Collection

As I mentioned here before, I have a tendency to look like I am ill.

Or have had way to little sleep (which is true most of the time).
Blush Collection
My Blush Collection

To stop people from making me sit down and have a glass of water, I rely heavily on the power of blush, both powder and cream.
Again, this little overview is MAC-heavy, just because I genuinely love their products and bought a lot of them back in the days.

The Neutrals

If you would have asked me before I wrote this post which color blushes I owned the most, I would have said „Coral“ without thinking twice.
Boy, I was wrong!
Blush Collection - The neutrals
Starting at twelve o´clock, going clockwise: „Garb“, „Blush all day“, „Prim & Proper“, „Semi Precious“, „Personal Style“, „Harmony“ (all MAC)
„Garb“: Sheertone Blush, a warm golden brown.
„Blush all day“: Pro Longwear Blush, a rose brown
„Prim &Proper“: Satin, a rose brown
„Semi Precious“: MSF, a plummy brown
„Personal Style“: Beauty Powder Blush, a true neutral brown
„Harmony“: Matte, a taupe brown, great for contouring
Swatches from left to right: „Garb“, „Blush all day“, „Prim & Proper“, „Semi Precious“ (Center Colors), „Semi Precious“ (All Colors), „Harmony“

The Corals

Not as many as I thought, but as you can see all well loved and left with a dent.
Blush Collection - The corals
L to R: „Instant Chic“ (MAC), „Orgasm“ (NARS), „Fleet Fast“ (MAC)
„Instant Chic“: Sheertone Blush, a true coral (MAC)
„Orgasm“: A more pink toned coral with lots of golden shimmer (NARS)
„Fleet Fast“: Satin, pinker than „Instant Chic“, but more orange than „Orgasm“ (MAC)
Swatches L to R: „Instant Chic“, „Orgasm“, „Fleet Fast“

The Peaches

My favorite color as soon as the weather gets warmer. Again, all MAC.
Blush Collection - The peach
L to R: „Warmth of Coral“, „Peach Blossom“
„Warmth of Coral“: Mineralize Blush, despite the name more peach than coral on me.
„Persistent Peach“: Blush Ombre, recently repromoted. Mine is several years old and well loved.
L to R: „Warmth of Coral“, „Peach Blossom“

The Creams

I only got into cream blushes about two years ago, so this part of my collection is the most likely to grow.
I sneakily ordered the MAC Cream Blush in „P.S. I like you“ and didn’t include it here, but will do a separate post with it some time soon. Update: Read here!
Blush Collection - The creams
L to R: „Soft Candy“ (Max Factor), „Floral Glam“ (Essence), „Soft Cardinal“ (Max Factor)
„Soft Candy“: A true red, on the warmer side.
„Floral Glam“: Cream to Powder Blush from a long gone LE, a true red.
„Soft Cardinal“: A warm pink, great worn as eyeshadow (see here)
L to R: „Soft Candy“, „Floral Glam“, „Soft Cardinal“
A lot of products, but most of them already have a dent and I even hit pan on „Blush all day“ (great for long days, because it really last all day). I use blush every single day.
Looking at my collection, I guess I´ll take it easy on the browns for the time coming and try to find some more pinks and/or berry tones…
Which color dominates your blush stash?
What would you think I am missing?
And are you a cream or a powder girl?

Save some space with this beauty

Whenever I traveled by plane, fees for overpacking my suitcase were inevitable.

Books were the one thing, heavy but absolutely necessary for holidays. As I am a fast reader, I usually took about 5-6 books for a two weeks getaway. And by books I mean a 1000 page historical novels or something like this.
So before our 4 weeks road trip to Chile, Mr. Loca got me an iPad, and I have never traveled without it since.
The other thing is skincare and makeup.
Just three outfits? No problem.
Two pair of shoes? I am okay with that.
But two weeks without my toners, serums, face and body moisturizer, hair mask, face mask, cleansers, makeup remover, …? Unthinkable.
Limiting myself to just two lipsticks? Four eyeshadows? One blush? Horrible!
MAXFACTOR Creamy Blush in „Soft Cardinal“ (Picture credit: MAXFACTOR website)
With our trip to New Zealand rapidly approaching, I had to realize that I just couldn’t clutter half of our camper van with makeup, especially when accompanied by a one-year old, needing diapers, toys, wipes and all that.
So I went on the hunt for multi-use products.

One that I had in my stash for quite some time now, but only ever used for its designated purpose, was the MaxFactor Creamy Blush in „Soft Cardinal“.
I admit, when I bought it, it was by mistake.
I wanted to grab its famous sister, „Soft Pink“, hyped all over YouTube, but somehow picked up the wrong color.
Lucky me, because „Soft Pink“ might just be too light to use it as I do with „Soft Cardinal“.
In the end of September, I spent some time with Mr. Loca and the Little Bean at my parents house in France. We decided that driving 12 hours would be too much for the baby, so I went there by plane with Little Bean and only Carry-on luggage, while Mr. Loca drove on his own, bringing the suitcases.
Brilliant plan, but there I was, trying to pack everything we would need for the next two days into a bag, limited to the size of 55x40x20 cm.
Diapers, wipes and baby food for the duration of the flight included!

Of course, there was the possibility of going bare-faced, but „Soft Cardinal“ came to my rescue.
This is the makeup I wore until Mr. Loca arrived:

All pink on eyes, lips and cheeks.

Products used:

L´Oréal Super Liner in Extra Black Gloss
L´Oréal False Lash Effect Mascara
MAC Concealer Palette in „Light“
MaxFactor Cream Blush in „Soft Cardinal“ as eyeshadow, lipstick and blush.

Of course, the longevity isn’t the best, especially on the lips, but it is easy to throw in your purse and touch up for the day.
I would always recommend lining at least your upper waterline and use mascara to create a barrier between the reddish-pink and your eyes. Otherwise you might look like you cried a little too much.

A word of warning though:
This product is a blush, so it is not recommended to use it around your eyes. I did it without experiencing any negative effects, and will continue to do so, but this is just me being a total makeup rebel…
