Did you know that on public holidays as well as on every Sunday, stores are closed in Germany? No quickly popping into town to get some food, no aimlessly wandering around looking for cute things to buy.
A public holiday (or every Sunday) is a holiday for everyone. Even the people working in retail. That may change, no matter how you personally feel about it, but at the moment it is my reality.
And every year I watch clips of the Boxing Day madness going on in other parts of the world from the comfort of my own home. I pat my belly, shift my weight from one side to the other (yes, the Christmas indulgence does bring back memories of the late stages of pregnancy) and wonder: Is there still anything we need to buy?
We all have these “bulb of light” moments that nudge us into a new direction. For me a facial had in celebration of my birthday was one of these moments (see here). The esthetician examined my face, said a few nice things about my pores and general skin and then, without a warning, pinched my cheek, saying: “Weak collagen, you are getting a saggy face already.”
See, I knew I would not be able to fight gravity forever. I mean, two kids and I can easily carry a pen beneath each breast (TMI?). But my boobs are nicely packed away most of the time.
My face is out there for everyone to see, and when I look really closely, I can see the first signs of bulldog cheeks appearing. Especially when I look closely at 6 am in harsh lighting and after a weekend of indulgence.
But is there something I can do about it? Actually there is. At least things that can improve the collagen production and thus slow the process. Some are diet based (bone broth and no sugar – I know, I can´t do it either), some are physical (Face rollers – I will write about them when I manage to use them consistently) and of course products, which is what we are all here for.
Best researched and mentioned numerous times here on the blog are retinol (read here) and Vitamin C, but there are a lot more and Qlabo Collagenerous (PR-Sample) features quite a few of them.
Have you ever been to the desert? And maybe wondered after a few hours spend in the dry heat how on earth anything could thrive here?
I happened to come across plants after a rare shower in the Israeli desert a few years back that looked way better than the ones at home on my window sill. To be honest, almost any plant looks better than mine at home do, as I am notoriously neglecting them, but for the dramatic effect let´s ignore that fact.
Back then I learned that these plants secret is Trehalose, the “sugar of life”. It forms a gel inside cells when they are dehydrated that keeps the cellular structure intact until rehydration is possible. Not only in desert plants, but possibly in human skin cells as well, minimizing the lethal effect dehydration and rehydration has on them. Which, translated, means less dry and flaky skin.
But even without that background information a product containing “sugar of life” would have had my undivided attention. I mean, sugar, hallo? Meet Qlabo Eauphoria *, named after the French “eau”, which means water, and euphoria.
It seems to become a tradition that I start my Favorites posts mentioning one thing that would have made it into my monthly recap for sure, had I known it already when filming.
Same thing happened with my May 2017 Favorites and Recap : I had a day off work on the 23rd, managed to sit down to film AND edit this video, and the next day, casually browsing beauty blogs as you do, I learned that Sephora is coming to Germany.
Really, it is, with a set date and all, and the best thing?
Out of the few locations they picked for the launch, Heidelberg, my home town, will be one! To my understanding Sephora will open its doors as part of a warehouse chain called Galeria Kaufhof (already sporting quite a selection of beauty things) in late July, and will most likely not carry the same brands people in the US can buy there.
But as someone deeply in love with many of Sephoras own products (read about them here and here for example) I am over the moon anyway and will make sure to stop by for a shop as soon as possible.
But enough of telling you what did NOT make it into my May 2017 Favorites and Recap, on to the things I actually talk about.
