The Body Shop Shade Adjusting Drops in „Lightening“ and some 80s reference

„Flash – ahaaaa, savior of the universe!“

Just be glad that I didn’t make a video on this one, otherwise you would have heard me singing, a thing only children aged below three can appreciate.

And no, I am not out of my mind, at least not more than usual. I just keep typing TBS drops in „Lightning“, and that somehow reminds me of the super hero in golden shorts and I chuckle. At my own joke. Sitting in front of the laptop.

The Body Shop Shade Adjusting Drops in "Lightening"
The Body Shop Shade Adjusting Drops in „Lightening“

I really need more of a social life…

Moving on: The Body Shop Shade Adjusting Drops in „Lightening“ have really saved my … makeup-verse (totally a word), golden pants or not.

You see, even if I don’t tan noticeably thanks to wearing SPF everyday, I do get a little darker throughout the year. Not much, but enough to make the foundations I fit perfectly in the summer time look a little odd when applied throughout the end of winter.

That is down to the small tan as well as the fact that I am yellow based, and the foundations lighter than what I usually reach for are mostly pink based.

So my choice was either buy some new foundations (not really catered to my skin tone) and warm them up with bronzer or just use the old ones and take them way down my neck.

One option is quite pricey, one is a pain in the b*tt if you wear turtlenecks.

What The Body Shop claims:

If you have light to medium skin you may find your foundation looks too dark or orange. A concentration of white and pink pigments in our Lightening Drops helps neutralise yellowness while lightening. Simply add a drop to lighten light to medium shades.

Packaging and price

Housed in a glass bottle, the foundation comes with a dropper and retails for 14 € (here) while containing 15 ml of product.

The dropper didn’t work too well for me, I had a hard time actually picking up product with it, so I exchanged it for another one from an empty container.

Application and effect

One drop will really lighten your foundation only a little bit, if your foundation is noticeable too dark, you will need two or even three drops, and just like claimed it will neutralize the warm undertone by adding just a little pink.

The texture of the foundation itself doesn’t change at all, nor does the coverage or the finish.

As you can see, one drop only lightens the foundation a little, so I usually take two for my whole face, mixed into the foundation.

The great thing is that you can apply them on top of your foundation as well for a highlighting effect as you have seen me do in several You Tube videos (My channel).

Does it live up to its claims?

Granted, one drop will not get you very far, but it does lighten and two to three drops should be enough for any foundation issues you have. Unless you have a completely mismatched shade.

Will I rebuy?

I am even planning on testing the dark version to see if it can be used for contouring.

Who do I recommend it to?

Anyone that needs a little help to make a slightly mismatched foundation work, especially if the issue is too dark or too warm.

Anyone that looks for a cream highlighter that isn’t shimmery at all, but gives that lift to the center part of the face.

Do your foundation needs change throughout the year?

And have you ever watched Flash Gordon?

I definitely need to get me one of this as well as the darkening one, ive wasted so much money in the past with wrong shade of foundations, if i only i had one of these!
    Pam xo/ Pam Scalfi♥

    • Me too, and then I left them sitting in my drawer for ages, never managing to throw them out, because I spend so much money on them…

  • I love this product but I agree, the packaging is a total let down!

  • Claire Cavanagh

This sounds FANTASTIC, I’m guilty of convincing girls at beauty counters to give me foundation darker than I need (constantly imagining I’ll be more tanned than I am ever) and so I would get so much use out of this 🙂

    Claire | xx

    • You convince them? I always thought it was the other way around. But I used to be the same, always figuring that I´d be so much more tanned come summer…

  • Haha, I remember Flash Gordon and the Queen song especially!
As you know, I just got these drops. I’ve only used them once so far, and they served their purpose well. I didn’t have any issues with the dropper.
I definitely do need different shades of foundation throughout the year. I love being in the sun, so I always get darker in the summer months despite wearing SPF. My skin tans easily for being so light.

    • I am only getting red when I try to tan, so I skipped it a few years back. Probably later than I should have…

  • Haha I often use that phrase „I need a little more of a social life“ haha you make me laugh. Interesting product though, I never knew such a thing existed, Gemma x

    • I think the need for more social life is a mom thing…

      • I agree, at least in my case, I’m sure there are lots of mums with amazing social lives but I like being home with the kids and hate using babysitters so I guess it’s a small price to pay. There’s lots of time for all that when they have grown up 😀 Have a lovely day xxx

        • I have never used a babysitter except my parents or my sister, but the few times I did I really enjoyed going out with my husband. But all in all I am pretty happy as well. At least I am caught up on my shows that way.

  • I didn’t realize it was slightly pink toned but I still want to try this! My skin shade varies throughout the year too and I’m not someone who will buy many shades of the same foundation.

    Advaita | Blush Canvas

    • I guess the slightly pink tone can be off-putting if you are very yellow based. I hope some company will come up with yellow based ones as well. But the pink isn’t that obvious, probably because you don’t nee too much of it.

  • I think I’ve seen you using this in your videos or maybe I’m wrong but this is the second review that I’ve read on this Lightening, shade adjusting drops from The Body Shop. The other blogger loves it too. Thankfully I don’t really have a problem with foundations being too dark/light for me, I’m somehow suit anything between two-three shades of beige. I look forward to your thought on the dark one for contouring.

    Shireen | Reflection of Sanity

    • Yes, I have used it in several videos now, and I really like the effect. I always seem to be in-between shades, so something like this is heaven sent. Even though it limits my excuse to buy more foundations. Should I have listed that as a con?

  • Thank you so much for this review, Anne! I was thinking of getting these drops and now I am definitely getting them! My skin shade changes so much during the year and it can get very annoying. Plus, I’m on a pale side and it’s a real pain in a certain area to find a good shade. It’s nearly impossible sometimes. I really hope these drops will change my whole makeup routine to better 🙂

    -Leta | The Nerdy Me

    • I think they will. Tell me how you get on with them once you have them.

  • Wellwell Girl

i need these kind of products as i can never get the perfect shade of foundation 🙁
my foundations are always either too pale or too dark

    jess x |

    • I seem to be in between shades very often as well. I think they will really help with that.

  • We probably all own a few base products that are just a shade off. This sounds like a godsend for those. I usually wear a slight darker cushion during the summer months.

    • If you have bases to switch, that is amazing. I like my Tinted Moisturizers come summer, and with the lighter coverage the shade doesn’t matter that much, but for filming I really need something with heavier coverage, and I try to be more mindful with spending and not have a dozen unused bases lying around.

  • i haven’t tried these, but i really want to!! and yes, i remember seeing flash gordon on tv once as a kid. i mostly remember the soundtrack.

  • I’ve never tried a product like this. The closest I’ve come was mixing a moisturiser with my foundation because I heard that that helped (it did, though maybe a bit too much!). The results are pretty amazing, though! As for Flash Gordon, I was wondering what you were referencing, so I guess that answers that, haha!

    • Mixing a moisturizer in will sheer it out, so that doesn’t always do the trick for me when I want heavier coverage. I like it in the summertime though, to get a lighter base. It works with mixing in with your SPF as well.

  • So great that brands are now coming out with products like this, it can really save us some cash! I don’t tan and really don’t get much darker if I try to tan…I burn! Haha! These sound great!

  • I could definitely do with picking these up! xx

  • thefashionsalt

I don’t use foundation regularly, but if I did I would definitely use this product. My skin gets really dark in the summer, even with Spf so I would definitely need something to lighten my foundation. This sounds like such a money saver compared to buying a new foundation!

    • And there isn’t as much product going to waste. If you use your base only in summer, it has probably gone off the next year and you end up wasting half of the tube.

  • As a pale person, white foundation was a real game-changer for me! I’ve never tried this one from the Bodyshop but it looks lovely.

    • Is the white foundation just white or has it a little pink as well?

      • Just white! That seems to work pretty well!

  • This product is genius! I need a version of this that fixes the undertone of foundations, then I’ll be in heaven. My skin is olive toned and all the foundations I’m matched to are yellow based, so I need some green drops! Lol

    • Maybe you are in luck with the color correcting trend that is upon us. Lots of greens flooding the market.

  • This is such an interesting product. I didn’t even see this come out on the market. Thanks so much for sharing this with me. My boyfriend has made a point of telling me that my foundation doesn’t match my tone anymore and I have been avoiding the fact- but this might just help!

Georgia | The Weekend Attic – Personal Style, Beauty and Lifestyle

    • Such an attentive boyfriend! My husband wouldn’t even notice if I wore bright orange on my face, I am afraid.

  • Denise

Yes, I know about Flash Gordon 🙂 But I think I never watched it, really can’t remember! I have read about these drops, and the review was very good, and now yours is even better! I so have some problems, being sometimes orange and being called Oompa Loompa 🙂 You can see the contrast between my hands when I put near my face to show a ring or even my legs. But somehow, once I read that wearing a darker foundation makes one look friendlier and so I felt better and even looked for darker foundations 🙂 But now I want to try these drops so much, to see whether I can finally have the real shade for me!

    • It may make you look friendlier, but it also makes you look older. The paler, the more radiant your skin is perceived. But I never noticed your foundation being off or too dark in our pictures, to be honest. You always looked very friendly though.

  • Hmm! I was worried it would change coverage and finishes. I might need to try it.

    • It doesn’t for me. it probably would if you put in way more, but the two drops really just lighten everything.

  • C A M I

I completely love the Body Shop, their products are so good but can get a bit expensive some time. Either ways I do not give up on it! Will be trying this product!

    My Vogue Style |

    • I love a lot of their stuff as well, and most of them are worth the price.

  • It’s really an interesting product but I’m a bit concerned about the fact that it’s pink-toned. I often have issues with foundation being too dark in the winter, but they’re not too warm. I should try to see how it works I guess!

    • It is more lightening than making it pink, but it does change the color a little towards more neutral for me. I guess it really depends on your skin.

  • Kay (shoesandglitter)

I remember reading a few reviews of this on other blogs, and it seems like a fab product! I don’t know why I haven’t purchased it yet… I have a super expensive Dior foundation that I paid way too much for that I’ve only used once because it’s way too dark for me. Yay for trying to blindly guess my foundation shade online… 😛 I bet this would work quite nicely, though! I’m a lot more careful with choosing foundation these days… I still don’t trust anyone in store to match me, but I tend to buy samples first and then go for whatever shades suits me best. 🙂 <3 x x

    • I have been there. Guessing my foundation shade always went horribly wrong… Great thing that there are websites like Temptalia these days to help choose…
And I have had horrible experiences when being watched in store as well, so samples is the way to go. Sadly they are really hard to get here in Germany, usually you need to have the foundation applied in store because they don’t hand out anything.

  • This looks great! I like this innovation. I’ve been holidaying on the beach lately and am so tanned that none of my foundations suit me anymore 🙁

  • what a great product!!! i didn’t know such thing existed. now you don’t have to worry about buying a darker shade by accident haaha

    • I haven’t seen a lot like it around as well, I think the concept is fairly new and only around for a few years.

  • Kate

I was always a bit sceptical about these, but seeing the result on your hand is very impressive! An amazing way to save money if you’ve made a mistake with a foundation shade! x

  • I have the worst luck finding a matching foundation shade (they’re almost always either slightly too light or too dark) so this is definitely something I’d love to try with some of foundations I have that are a bit too dark for me! So happy to see that it actually does live up to its claims!

    Thirteen Thoughts

    • I was the same, it always looked slightly off, so when I first heard about them I knew I had to give them a go. And I am really convinced, they make my base game so much easier!

  • I was thinking it would actually change the consistency of the foundation, that’s why I was gonna skip it! Good that it doesn’t change the consistency and the coverage, I will keep this in mind! I’m a in between shade most of the time, it is so hard to find a perfect match and my face tends to go darker in summer (I shouldn’t skip sun cream) so I can’t really use my summer foundation in winter. TBS drop makes its way to my wishlist now!

    Ela BellaWorld

    • It is so high in pigmentation you don’t add enough to change the consistency. If you would go half-half, it probably would, but with two drops it just stays the same.

I’ll definitely try this trick: I’m usually very light skin but with a light tan my color change pretty quicklyduring all summer long! ;D

  • Yousra

Wow, I definitely need this! I always take the lightest shade and it still isn’t perfect so this would be great! Does it change the finish of your foundation though, or affect the longevity in any way?

    Yousra | Mystic Tales

    • So you are that pale? I sued to be, but darkened a little over the years, so now I can buy drugstore foundation as well as high end.

  • Swati Sharma

    this product looks great….

  • Oh this sounds great! I have been matched to yellow based tones all my life, but I always look odd. That is because I am mostly „neutral“. That means yellow and pink are quite balanced on me. This is both a blessing and a curse! Foundation wise, it is definitely a curse. Then I have to invest in really expensive foundations which usually carry „neutral“ shades. My best matches are from YSL (so you imagine the pricetag for face paint!!). I obviously would love to try this! I hope they carry it in Switzerland 🙂

    • I am neutral as well. Have you tried MAC Matchmaster? They had the first ever neutral foundation that really matched my skin. But they aren’t very affordable either. With these drops, buying drugstore foundation is a breeze, because it jut gets a little more neutral and fits perfectly to my undertone.

      • I haven’t tried MAC Matchmaster yet. But I would love to try some catrice, Revlon foundations and none of the shades available in Switzerland really match me!
I am ok with Bourjois, but it is not THAT drugstore price it costs 25 USD here, not bad, but not the cheapest. I went looking for the TBS drops and they’re sold out everywhere near me.

        • I ordered mine online, as they were sold out in store as well. What color are you in MAC? I am NC 15, but that is a tad too yellow in winter.

          • I’m in between NC15 and NC20, NC15 is a good for me in winter, with a bit of bronzer, but it looks ashy the rest of the year

          • I really hope they will help you with that issue.

  • I didn’t even know this existed! Sounds wonderful! I’ll have to get this!

  • Corinne C

I didn’t know this existed either, sounds like one to check out!

  • Wow, now this product sounds very useful as it can be used to lighten the foundation and highlight the skin at the same time. I never knew that something like this was in the market. Thanks for sharing. 🙂

    • I don’t think it has been around very long. There are some other versions, but most of them are more expensive. Do you usually buy foundation that is too dark?

  • Christine K

I had no idea the body shop had such a product! I have so many shades of foundations as I’m constantly mixing and matching! Thanks for the eye opening review – this would be much more economical for me to pick up a lightening and darkening adjusting drop!

    • It really is a great product for getting more use out of your foundations.

  • haha thanks, now I have that Flash Gordon song in my head…..

This sounds like a great product! Perfect for those who tan well and need to lighten the foundation when their tan fades. Sadly I don’t tan, I just burn and peel, but I’ll mention this to my sister – who tans super easily.

    Away From The Blue Blog

    • Weird, my sister tans great as well, and I just get red if I am not super careful. She is about two to three shades darker than me even in summer, while having the same eyes and hair…

      • Funny how siblings can be so different! 🙂 We keep noting the similarities and differences between toddler T as a baby and baby boy! 🙂

        • Same here, although I compare a boy and a girl, which makes it different to start with. But they seem to be completely different in personality as well. How about your boys?

          • They are really different personality wise. I may be comparing the newborn days with the infant days though, haha. So far baby boy is a better sleeper than the toddler, even if he does have day and night around the wrong way. But in general newborns sleep a lot, we will see as he gets older 😉 We had to take a baby sleep class with the toddler as he would only nap for 20 minutes for a few weeks…hoping we don’t have a repeat of that 😛

          • My son is a better sleeper than my daughter as well, but not by much, to be honest. I carry him a lot in the baby sling throughout the day, that makes all the difference and keeps my hands free.

          • We have an ergo so it’s a bit bulkier with a newborn, as you have to buckle them into an insert first and arrange it all perfectly. Because of that I don’t wear him an awful lot. But due to his insanely long feeds hes putting on a bunch of weight so he will be getting past the need to have the insert soon which makes it much easier to wear him and take him everywhere 🙂 I do like the hands-free ability, especially with a toddler!

          • I tried these carriers as well, but I felt most comfortable with the sling and the ability to adjust it myself, especially when they are so small. I don’t know how I would do without it.

  • Rosanna Briguglio

I always forget about The Body Shop! I must go in and check out their products!!

  • You made me laugh so hard 😀 I love the idea, however I don’t think I would be able to use it, since I’m very pale and even in summer I don’t tan enough to have to have a darker/lighter foundation for different seasons 😀 But I love the idea! I think there are more brands out there that do that… xx

    • I have seen it a few times before as well, but only in a way more expensive version that I was hesitant to try. You seem to be very good with your SPF if you don’t tan at all, that is great.

  • I really want to try out this product! Great post.

Seen as since Summer is approaching I may have to pick up the darkening version ♥

  • Haha Flash Gordon! Isn’t that the guy they mentioned in one of those Ted movies? I think that’s where I’ve heard the name from lol.

Pretty interesting product! I can see how useful it could be.

    • I haven’t seen the Ted movies, so I don’t know. Blonde guy, wearing golden hot pants and fighting aliens, basically.

  • I’m so glad that you found a solution! I am interested to see how the dark version works for you, as well.

  • No, not He-Man. Flash Gordon was a little before that. He made his first appearance in 1934, but had a big movie comeback in the 80ies, which is where I remember him from.

  • Sounds great! Does it mix easily?
    Cheryl | SwissBeautyTalk

    • Yes, the do, at least with the foundations I have tried them with. I can imagine a very, very runny foundation, like the serum infused ones, maybe being a little difficult, but your regular foundation mixes great.

  • The Sunday Mode

I’ve been interested in this since it came out because it sounds like it would be perfect for me. I’m quite fair (aka super pale) so for me finding foundations light enough is usually a nightmare. I like that this doesn’t change the coverage or the finish of the foundation as well, that makes it so much more appealing. Well done The Body Shop, I say!

  • This sounds amazing. I have never heard of it before. Thanks for sharing and great post!

    • It is fairly recent, I picked it up as soon as I learned about it. Do you struggle to find matching foundations?

  • I’ve heard of these and next time I’m near a body shop I’m so picking it up, as well as the darkening ones. I have a few foundations that could do with going a bit lighter and darker. Such a cool concept.

    • I want to try the darkening ones as well, even though I don’t think I have any foundation that is too dark for me.

  • Lou

This sounds incredible!! I am so pale that every foundation is always so orange toned for my skintone. This sounds like a saviour! x

    • It really helps when you struggle to find the right foundation. I just wish brands would offer more color variety to start with.
